There’s a reason why Spike Lee’s latest, “Highest 2 Lowest” opens with “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'” from “Oklahoma!” playing over swooning aerial views of the high-rises of New York. The oldest of five kids, Lee was not only influenced by his jazz musician father, but he was also his cinephile mother’s movie date. She loved musicals like “Oklahoma!,” “The Sound of Music,” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” which inspired the Rosie Perez opening of “Do the Right Thing.”

A family friend also took the young Lee to see Akira Kurosawa films.

Before we were privy to Denzel Washington’s advice on fame and star power, he was busy making a chilling thriller that was enough to scare even him. The Superman who returns in Superman Returns is a different Man of Steel than we are used to seeing. In Superman: The Movie, the film by director Richard Donner in 1978, the late Christopher Reeve rescued the iconic superhero from high camp with the sincerity and warmth of his acting. His Superman was a romantic charmer. Director Bryan Singer positions this new film as a sequel to Donner’s film, and his Superman — played with winning fortitude by newcomer Brandon Routh — is less a Man of Steel than a Man of Heart.

The Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaf) has announced the opening lineup for its 23rd annual celebration, providing a platform for Black and brown filmmakers, taking place Aug. 1-9, 2025.

Kicking off the festivities on Aug. 1 will be a screening of the sports documentary Unraveling George. House of Games is getting a remake at Amazon MGM Studios. The acclaimed 1987 neo-noir will be reimagined for the 21st century with two former stars of the DC Extended Universe.

According to Deadline, Viola Davis and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II are set to star in a reimagining of House of Games, which is in development at Amazon MGM Studios.Additionally, the actors will produce the remake through their respective production banners, Juvee Productions and House Eleven10. While they have achieved success outside the superhero genre, Davis and Abdul-Matteen II are still perhaps best known for their involvement in the Dceu, with the former starring as A.R.G.U.S. agent Amanda Waller in Suicide Squad, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, and Black Adam, and the latter as Black Manta in the Aquaman duology.
