Blu-ray.com has reported on Sony’s newest physical media release for the 1985 western Silverado. The Lawrence Kasdan film is packed with an all-star cast that includes Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, John Cleese, Jeff Goldblum, Jeff Fahey, Rosanna Arquette, Linda Hunt & Brian Dennehy. The movie will come in a Blu-ray/4K Blu-ray combo pack and is scheduled to be available on October 7.
Our Eic, Chris Bumbray, raved about the film in a retrospective column and video, in which he stated, “Silverado is so much fun that it’s insane to think that the movie never spawned a western franchise that would have sustained a whole series of films. Kasdan should still be making Silverado adventures thirty years later. For one thing, this was Kasdan in his prime, so the writing and craftsmanship is right-on.”
The description reads,

Cole Escola has revealed their picks for an Oh, Mary! film adaptation. While appearing on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, the Tony-winner was asked about a potential film adaptation of the hit Broadway comedy. While they didn't confirm that there was a film in the works, they gave some suggestions on who could star as Mary Todd Lincoln. Before Escola joined the interview, their longtime collaborator and friend Amy Sedaris suggested that Linda Hunt should take on the role, which Escola agreed with. They also suggested Cherry Jones, adding that Jones would also give a "really chilling" performance as Mary's Husband, Abraham Lincoln. Escola then suggested that a Muppet would be great, sharing that they would like to see Miss Piggy play Mary Todd Lincoln, with the...

Any show that makes it to 300 episodes is on a relatively small list in the grand scheme of TV history, especially if we take out the likes of unscripted and talk shows from that list. In the realm of scripted television, it's truly rare air, and it's even rarer when a spin-off manages to accomplish such a feat. Such is the case with "NCIS: Los Angeles," which lasted a whopping 14 seasons spanning 323 episodes. It's even more amazing given that the flagship show "NCIS" was, itself, technically a spin-off of the oft-forgotten "Jag."
The first spin-off in the larger "NCIS" franchise has a great many characters that fans came to know and love over the years, including Chris O'Donnell's Callen and LL Cool J's Sam Hanna. But at or right near the top of that list is Linda Hunt, who...

The long-running drama NCIS is set to continue its impressive journey, recently being renewed for its 23rd season. Over the years, many who helped shape the show have moved on, including co-creator and former showrunner Donald Bellisario.
Bellisario led the series for four seasons before departing in 2007, with numerous reports suggesting that his exit stemmed from an alleged feud with the show’s lead, Mark Harmon. Looking back, Bellisario later expressed regret over how things unfolded leading up to his departure.

NCIS: Origins has been an interesting show to discuss. It's a prequel to the events of the flagship NCIS series, but it's pulling from characters and events that we first heard about two decades ago. We are finally getting to see hallowed NCIS events play out in real time, which gives the show both a fresh appeal and a sense of nostalgia.
Origins will continue to appeal to fans in this unique sense courtesy of its season one finale. The series has already played out the details that led Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Austin Stowell) to kill the man responsible for his wife and child's death. The finale, however, will detail what happens when this violent act is discovered by Gibbs' peers.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was the bonafide action star of the ‘80s and ‘90s, but he never shied away from exploring other genres. The actor especially excelled in comedies, collaborating with actors like Danny DeVito and Sinbad to craft some jolly-good comedies in the ‘80s and the ‘90s, while simultaneously beating up bad guys.
One of them was the underrated action-comedy Kindergarten Cop, where he played an undercover police detective posing as a kindergarten teacher. The film was a commercial success, and Schwarzenegger was praised for his acting chops. However, his co-star Linda Hunt implied that her role was too ‘boring’ and made her thankful for NCIS: Los Angeles.

NCIS is bringing in a huge NCIS: Los Angeles guest star that might finally bring closure for a key character! Who's back, and what does this mean for Hetty?
At one point, NCIS was a far bigger franchise with spinoffs in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Hawaii. 2023 saw a big crossover between the shows, made just before NCIS: Los Angeles ended its 14-season run.
That was followed by LL Cool J heading to NCIS: Hawaii as his character of agent Sam Hanna. It was supposed to be a boost for that show only for NCIS: Hawaii to shockingly be canceled in 2024.
While the current season of NCIS has had a few mentions of the other teams, we haven't got more than that. Thankfully for fans, it’s now confirmed that we’re seeing Sam coming back to the franchise!

Kevin Costner has made a huge number of great movies in the course of his acting career, but only a handful are available to stream on Netflix. In his four decades of making movies, Kevin Costner has become one of the most notable actors of all time. He's starred in some of the best Western movies ever made, like Dances with Wolves, as well as some of the best historical dramas and crime thrillers, like The Untouchables. After such a successful career, Costner has more than a handful of dedicated fans, and more than a few people who want to watch his movies.
Luckily, watching Costner's movies has never been easier thanks to the era of streaming services. The only caveat to the on-demand films is the sheer number of streamers out there. With options like Max, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+ and more, many of Costner's films are scattered across websites and locked behind paywalls.

Thankfully, not all movies are Oscar bait and sometimes the best form of escapism is turning on a movie that doesnt require too much attention or analysis. Cheesy movies with clich love stories, nonsensical plots and one-dimensional characters arent always box office gold, but they can become cult classics.
Cheesy movies dont need A-list stars like Jennifer Lawrence or Leonardo DiCaprio, although they can be places to spot such stars before they become household names. All a good cheesy movie needs is a ridiculous story, silly humor, and a few memorable lines for audiences to appreciate the camp, even decades later.

NCIS has been on the air for over 20 years and has also led to the formation of several NCIS spinoffs. The show has managed to maintain its popularity despite numerous cast changes and character exits, highlighting the success of its formula. Recent NCIS seasons have even revealed the exit of major main characters, demonstrating its ongoing development.
NCIS's popularity over the years can be attributed to its familiarity, routine, and likable characters. However, NCIS is just one of many procedural TV shows that highlight charismatic characters who work together to bring criminals to justice. The niche of NCIS is that it focuses on crimes related to Navy and Marine Corps personnel, and while every show has its own focus, there are a few crime...

Ron Howard has directed numerous acclaimed films across various genres. He started as an actor in two of the most popular television shows: The Andy Griffith Show and Happy Days. Later in his career, he switched gears toward directing. Starting out with a flopped film called Grand Theft Auto, his directorial career only improved from there.
As Howard honed the craft of directing films, he mastered blending tension, drama and humor. Today, Howard is one of the most prestigious and accomplished directors. Some of his films have had a large cultural impact.

The 'family sitcom' gets a kick in the pants with The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, the new Freevee series from creator Vijal Patel, a veteran of acclaimed series like Black-ish, The Middle, and The Mayor. The series follows the Pradeep family, Indian immigrants seeking a new life in The United States. However, something clearly went wrong, since the show is told via flashbacks as the family and their neighbors are interviewed by a pair of federal agents investigating a community-shattering arson case.
The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh is loosely based on the life and upbringing of creator Vijal Patel, but with the serialized mystery element adding an extra layer of intrigue and excitement. In addition, being on Prime Video and Freevee instead of traditional broadcast television allows The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh to get away with saltier language and more risqu situations, while still remaining more-or-less family-friendly.

The 90s was a great time for adaptations. Jurassic Park is the gold standard, of course, but there was so much more. That book’s author, Michael Crichton, also had Sphere and Congo get greenlit and released while we would see non-horror output like Forrest Gump and Shawshank Redemption, which account for the greatest film of all time… and Forrest Gump. On the horror side we would have Silence of the Lambs, the wonderful It TV miniseries, Exorcist III, and a fun little monster movie throwback called The Relic. At the time, I just thought it was a cool creature feature designed specifically for 12-year-olds like me but looking back all these years later I found out it was an adaptation of a book by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child in what would be the first of 22 separate stories for one of the chief protagonists. That’s all well and...

Linda Hunt's role as Hetty in NCIS: LA has significantly contributed to her $12 million net worth. Hunt's Aries leadership traits shine through in her iconic character, who is a pilot, author, and Olympian. Despite her short stature, Hunt's talents are huge and she even won an Oscar early in her career.
Linda Hunt is an actor who's been in the business for over 40 years, but it's likely her late-career role as Operations Manager Henrietta "Hetty" Lange in NCIS: Los Angeles that is most responsible for her sizable net worth. Hunt made her film debut in 1980's Popeye opposite Robin Williams, where she played Mrs. Oxheart. Just two years later, Hunt was taking home the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her role as Billy Kwan in The Year of Living Dangerously. With six Oscar nominations under his belt, Australian-born director Peter Weir has firmly established himself as one of our most respected filmmakers thanks to a number of visually striking, narratively ambitious movies. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 13 of his movies, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1944, Weir helped usher in the Australian New Wave of cinema with “Picnic at Hanging Rock” (1975), “The Last Wave” (1977), “Gallipoli” (1981) and “The Year of Living Dangerously” (1983). He brought his unique brand of filmmaking to Hollywood with the romantic mystery “Witness” (1985), which brought him his first Oscar nomination for Best Director. He earned a subsequent bid in the category for the inspirational teacher drama “Dead Poets Society” (1989), competing once again for the media satire “The Truman Show” (1998) and the swashbuckling epic “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), for which he also contended in Best Picture.

Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. This week, we cover the 56th Academy Awards in 1984, honoring the films of 1983.
On her fifth Best Actress nomination, Shirley MacLaine finally took home the coveted prize for “Terms of Endearment,” which scored five wins total, including Best Picture. Declaring “I deserve this” at the end of her speech, MacLaine defeated her onscreen daughter, Debra Winger, for the prize — the penultimate time a film has produced double Best Actress nominees. Did MacLaine deserve it over Winger? Would Winger have won in supporting? And will we ever see double Best Actress nominees again?

The original The Next Generation series is inevitably regarded as one of the best Star Trek shows to have been created to date. Starring Patrick Stewart in the lead as Jean-Luc Picard, the series continues to leave fans at the edge of their seats even after over three decades since its last aired episode. However, one actress fired from the show has some serious allegations against it.

Filmmaker David Lynch reflected on the valuable lesson he learned from his Dune movie adaptation. He's now opened up on how it feels like he "died" after not knowing that vital information before he signed on.
As told on NPR's Wild Card with Rachel Martin podcast (per Deadline), Lynch recalled how he signed on for Dune without having the guaranteed final cut of the feature film. While he was apprehensive about this even before boarding the project, Lynch made himself believe that it wouldn't turn out to be a problem. The director was very wrong with that prediction, as the Dune movie wound up getting altered to the point where it was outside of the vision he had for the film. Since then, Lynch refuses to take on any new projects unless he gets the final cut.

The 1970s was a critical time in filmmaking, with directors worldwide reasserting themselves as the primary creative force in the industry after decades of studio control. Then came the 80s, in which all that hard-won artistic control became commodified through erotic thrillers, action vehicles, and the birth of the summer blockbuster. Many of those blockbusters were of the science fiction variety, including films like Aliens, The Thing, and Blade Runner, but other fantastic sci-fi films were released that decade that slipped through the cracks.
In the 1980s, sci-fi began crossing streams with other popular genres like horror, Western, and action thrillers. It resulted in a series of unique films that, while perhaps not ready for immediate mainstream success, grew into themselves and have since become unheralded classics of the genre.

The Venice Film Festival will fete Australian director and screenwriter Peter Weir with its honorary Golden Lion at its forthcoming 80th edition.
Accepting the honor, Weir said: “The Venice Film Festival and its Golden Lion are part of the folklore of our craft. To be singled out as a recipient for a lifetime’s work as a director is a considerable honor.”
Born in August 1944, Weir was one of the pivotal figures in the Australian New Wave cinema of the 70s. He began his career in 1969 when he took a job with the government-funded Commonwealth Film Unit as a director. Weir struck out on his own in 1973 and directed his first feature film, the comic-horror The Cars That Ate Paris (1974), which he also wrote. He won an international audience with Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), followed by The Last Wave (1977), for which he also co-wrote the screenplay.

It was not common for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to dive into television-based content before Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Joss Whedon had a part to play in it. Stemming from the first Avengers movie, the show was an idea no one had explored before. It laid the foundation of what the franchise could do outside of just the big screen and its success was the hope that no one knew they really needed.

It may be a mystery to famed director David Lynch that Patrick Stewart was an acclaimed actor when the latter showed up on the set of his 1984 adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.
Well, sometimes directors have a clear vision of the ideal actor for a role, while other times, a happy accident can result in unexpected greatness. Such was the case with Lynch’s original 1984 Dune adaptation, in which he erroneously cast Patrick Stewart in a role that was meant for someone else.
Yes, Stewart, 83, inadvertently obtained the role of Gurney Halleck. In the process of replacing Aldo Ray at the eleventh hour, the director erroneously cast another Patrick Stewart.
David Lynch’s Dune 1984
Aside from being a financial disaster and receiving negative reviews, the film has developed a cult following over the years, and this intriguing casting mishap is just one of the many oddball tales surrounding its creation.

At the inaugural Academy Awards in 1929, native Pennsylvanian Janet Gaynor made history as the first American-born performer to win an Oscar by taking the Best Actress prize for her body of work in “7th Heaven,” “Street Angel,” and “Sunrise.” Over the subsequent 95 years, 215 more thespians originating from the United States won the academy’s favor, meaning the country has now produced 68.1% of all individual acting Oscar recipients. Considering the last decade alone, the rate of such winners is even higher, at 70.3%.
At this point, 96.8% of American-born acting Oscar victors have hailed from one of 34 actual states. Of those constituting the remainder, three originated from the federal District of Columbia, while four were born in the territory of Puerto Rico. NCIS has been part of the television landscape for the past two decades.
Following a two-episode backdoor pilot on Jag in 2003, the redundantly named Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service debuted in the fall of that year.
Although it started slowly ratings-wise in its first couple of seasons, a franchise soon was born.
Now in its 21st season, NCIS has produced more than 450 episodes and six spinoff series, a record unmatched in TV history (although Law & Order fans doubtless will quibble).
Maybe now, shortly after the series said goodbye to its second-most popular character on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2, would be a good time for a hiatus.
That's insane, you say, what with two new spinoffs in the pipeline.

In 2020 – for the first time in seven years – the Best Supporting Actress Oscar category saw a lone nomination, meaning that a film was recognized there and nowhere else. This achievement is attributed to Kathy Bates (“Richard Jewell”), who competed for no major precursors except the Golden Globe but still managed to bump Critics Choice, SAG, and Globe nominee Jennifer Lopez (“Hustlers”). Perhaps unsurprisingly given the length of the streak she broke, there has yet to be a lone contender in any of her category’s subsequent lineups.
Since the introduction of the two gendered supporting Oscars in 1937, there have been 57 female lone nominees and 54 male ones, with over half of the entrants on the former roster having been added before 1977. The one who directly preceded Bates was Helen Hunt, whose inclusion in her lineup was much more heavily predicted. One of the most beloved movies of 1983 is “The Big Chill,” starring Kevin Kline, Glenn Close, William Hurt and Meg Tilly. Written by Lawrence Kasdan and Barbara Benedek and directed by Kasdan, the film is an ensemble comedy-drama about a group of former college friends who reunite for a weekend after one of their college friends dies. Released 40 years ago on September 28, 1983, “The Big Chill” did well at the box office, making $56 million worldwide on a budget of just $8 million. The movie marked another financial triumph for director Kasdan, whose feature debut two years earlier, “Body Heat,” did well at the box office and with critics. It always bothers me when Joss Whedon is referred to as being the chief creative force behind "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," and not just because of everything that's come out about his workplace misconduct and toxic behavior since 2017. While he did, in fact, develop the Marvel Television show with his brother Jed Whedon and sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen, it was the latter duo who sculpted the series into one of the best projects to emerge from the House of Ideas since the Marvel Cinematic Universe began its industry-changing run.
Of course, circa 2012, "Joss is Boss" was a tenant among Joss Whedon fans. Having already created the fan-favorite series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and cult space Western show "Firefly," the multi-hyphenate only fortified his genre credentials that year by helming the McU's hugely popular "The Avengers." That basically gave Whedon carte blanche to do whatever he wanted in the Marvel universe, which included...

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard went out with a bang this year, reuniting the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and delivering a compelling conclusion to a story that started 37 years ago. Patrick Stewart, Gates McFadden and Jonathan Frakes reflect on their earliest days, and describe the emotion they felt as they stepped back onto the bridge of the USS Enterprise.
Deadline: Do you remember your first meeting with one another, way back in 1986?
Jonathan Frakes: I do remember the first time I met Patrick. We’d been called into the makeup trailer to meet the great king of makeup, Michael Westmore. Patrick and I introduced ourselves to one another, and we got right into a cricket versus baseball conversation that eventually led to him becoming a big LA Dodgers fan [laughs].
Gates McFadden: I was doing a play with Linda Hunt called The Matchmaker,...

The last episode before the two-part series finale for NCIS: Los Angeles featured Callen (Chris O’Donnell) getting a file on his life — and learning just how he and Sam (LL Cool J) ended up as partners. (And thankfully they did! Could you imagine the show without their banter? We can’t either.) In “The Reckoning,” Callen came face-to-face with Pembrook (Jere Burns), who had been part of the spy program he’d unwittingly been entered into as a kid. And in their last meeting of the episode, during which he got that aforementioned file, Callen also heard more about Hetty’s (Linda Hunt) role in his part in (and out of) it. She’d pulled him out of the program because she “was consumed with guilt” for putting him in it, wanting him to fulfill his potential. “That world was all she knew. It’s all she had to offer you,...

NCIS: Los Angeles ended its 14-season run on CBS with a finale all about “New Beginnings” (hence the title), and while it was a mostly happy ending, everything wasn’t tied up neatly with a bow. For example, yes, Callen (Chris O’Donnell) has learned quite a bit about himself over the years and did marry Anna (Bar Paly). Yes, Callen and Sam (LL Cool J) went to Morocco to join Nell’s (Renée Felice Smith) team in a mission to rescue Hetty (Linda Hunt), and we can assume that will be successful (especially with LL Cool J recurring on Hawai’i in Season 3). We know that Kensi (Daniela Ruah) and Deeks’ (Eric Christian Olsen) family will soon be one of four, with her pregnant. But what about the storylines that weren’t wrapped up or the callbacks we didn’t get (like we did with Switch and Mr. Carl? “We...

Original NCIS: Los Angeles star Barrett Foa reacts to missing the series finale. The spinoff premiered on CBS back in 2009, following agents within the LA-based Office of Special Projects – a division of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service that handles undercover assignments. Despite being one of the longest-running shows on television, it was announced in January that NCIS: Los Angeles would conclude after season 14. Foa portrayed Eric Beale through most of the series, a technical operator with a unique personality, whose relationship with Nell Jones (Renée Felice Smith) became an important storyline.
When the series finale of NCIS: Los Angeles aired on May 21, audiences might have been surprised to find out that Eric did not return. In a statement made to TVLine, the actor shared that while reprising his role "would have a dream," he was happy the character was mentioned. Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill also touched on Foa's absence, revealing...
