When she started acting, she had trouble getting roles because she was often taller than the male actors with whom she might have acted.

Much of her youth was wiped from her memory, as she suffered a case of retrograde amnesia due to a severe head injury suffered in a fall from a horse. On July 16, 2018, she announced on Facebook that suffers from a serious form of dementia, believed to be a result of that injury. In November 2018, it was announced that she was in the late stages of dementia and was receiving hospice care at home.

In her 20s, she was enjoying a ride on her horse Scamp when a pony left without supervision attacked her horse. Julie fell on her head as Scamp tried to jump over a station-wagon, breaking one arm and badly scratching her back. When she came to her senses in the hospital, she didn't recognize any of her family members, nor any close friends. She couldn't even read, as she learned her alphabet once again in its entirety. All this would take two long years, as with becoming physically mobile once again. The mad pony's owner was successfully sued and paid a big price. With the money, Julie traveled for nearly a year. However, the damage caused from the accident led to her eventually dying of dementia three decades later.

She was on the same track team as another actress from Pleasant Hill, Beth Toussaint.
