Exclusive: Amazon MGM Studios’ The Big Sick and The Idea of You filmmaker Michael Showalter is back with the theatrical streaming studio for an untitled pop movie inspired by Cyrano de Bergerac.

Showalter will direct the untitled Cyrano Pop movie, which Andrea Seigel will write based on a Cyrano de Bergerac-type story by her and Showalter about a behind-the-scenes songwriter in the world of pop stars.

Catherine Davis of Nine Lives Entertainment, John Davis of Davis Entertainment, and Showalter and Jordana Mollick of Semi-Formal Productions are producing. Emily Crook is overseeing the project for Semi-Formal.

The bicoastal public relations and consulting firm has promoted Allie Jenkins and Chelsea Hayes in the agency’s Los Angeles and New York offices, respectively. With their new senior vp titles, the pair will be charged with partnering across teams to help shape strategy, guide emerging talent and support operational procedures while working alongside vice presidents Lauren Appel, Christa Dallas, Caryn Leeds and Annick Oppenheim.

Director Gerard Johnstone revealed the inspiration for the “dark mirror” AI counterpart to robot M3GAN in the original film’s sequel, “M3GAN 2.0” — although he admits Amelia didn’t really turn out as planned.

“The reference was Michelle Pfeiffer in ‘Scarface,’ but she ended up looking a lot more like Jessica Rabbit,” Johnstone told Variety. “This is a way for a middle-aged man like myself to play dress-up dolls, so it’s a real dream come true.” Johnstone explained that Amelia — the aforementioned counterpart — had to be more “grungy” and “tactile” than M3GAN. “She’s a woman, whereas M3GAN’s stuck in the permanent state of adolescence,” he explained.

Tackling an AI-centric in 2025, Johnstone admitted, is “thorny territory,” and that “M3GAN” explores whether or not it is time to take a “pause we can really figure this out and put some systems in place” for the technological advancements.

The superhero genre has delivered some of the greatest highs and lows in Hollywood history.
