It came out the same year as another masterpiece set in the industry, Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, which showed the dark side of Hollywood when they decided they were done with you. “It’s the pictures that got small,” Norma Desmond utters after declaring she is still “big.”

A major star for the majority of his adult life, Jay Kelly has so thoroughly subsumed himself into his classic screen persona — smirking, debonair, heroic — that he no longer seems to know who he is off set. More troublingly, the world-famous actor has come to like it that way. As Sylvia Plath once wrote: “It’s a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It’s much easier to be somebody else or nobody at all.”

That quote serves as an almost oppressively fitting epigraph for the misty-eyed Netflix movie that Noah Baumbach has made about one of the last true Hollywood stars — or two of them, I should say, as Jay Kelly is so transparent a stand-in for the actor who plays him that he and George Clooney share the same body of work. George Clooney has had to scale back his promotional activities at this year’s Venice International Film Festival for his new movie, “Jay Kelly.”

After arriving in Venice earlier this week, the actor missed the festival’s “Jay Kelly” press conference early Thursday. The festival moderator told attendees Clooney’s absence was due to a “bad sinus infection” and that the star was “very sorry” he could not be there. “Jay Kelly” writer-director Noah Baumbach, for his part, noted with a laugh, “Even movie stars get sick!”

The conference’s moderator also told attendees that Clooney “should” still be able to make an appearance at the film’s red carpet world premiere Thursday night.

Ahead of the Nov. 14 theatrical premiere of their film Jay Kelly, which then moves to the streamer on Dec. 5, George Clooney praised his co-star as more than “just some goofy comedian” in the Noah Baumbach comedy-drama.

“This film, more than any film Adam has done, shows what a beautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor he is—I kept telling the cast, ‘Don’t call him Sand Man. Don’t talk to him like he’s just some goofy comedian. He’s actually a really beautiful, wonderful actor,'” he told Vanity Fair.

Speaking to Vanity Fair for a preview piece on Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, the two-time Oscar winner didn’t mince words when addressing criticism that his characters are tantamount to playing versions of himself onscreen.

“Do people say that I only play myself? I don’t give a sh–,” the Good Night, and Good Luck actor said. “There aren’t that many guys in my age group that are allowed to do both broad comedies like O Brother [Where Art Though?] and then do Michael Clayton or Syriana [for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award]. During the interview, Gunn stopped at a display for Paddington in Peru and admitted he hadn’t seen it yet. But he didn’t hold back when talking about the previous film in the series. “Paddington 2 is a classic film,” he said. “It’s one of the greatest movies ever made. People think I’m being ironic when I say that, but I’m telling the truth.”

That’s a strong take, but he’s far from the only one who feels that way.
