Noah Baumbach turned 55 last September. And he works in the movie business, which has been in serious disarray over the past few years. It’s possible he would have made “Jay Kelly” without those two factors, but it’s even likelier that in this case, timing is everything.
“Jay Kelly,” which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday, is suffused with melancholy for a business that seems to be on shaky ground and filled with a nostalgia for times gone by. For people of Baumbach’s age and his star George Clooney’s age (64), it is very much a movie of its time, which lends gravity...

It is not an original idea to make a movie about a movie star. Think Notting Hill, The Bodyguard, Tropic Thunder, America’s Sweethearts, A Star Is Born, Birdman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Bowfinger. I could go on. The greatest film I ever saw about a star was Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s masterful All About Eve, even if that was set on Broadway. It came out the same year as another masterpiece set in the industry, Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard, which showed the dark side of Hollywood when they decided they were done with you. “It’s the pictures that got small,” Norma Desmond utters after declaring she is still “big.”
Both are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year and remarkably are as fresh, even as perceptive, as when they were released. Eve still to this day shares the record for the most Oscar nominations with 14, winning six...

A major star for the majority of his adult life, Jay Kelly has so thoroughly subsumed himself into his classic screen persona — smirking, debonair, heroic — that he no longer seems to know who he is off set. More troublingly, the world-famous actor has come to like it that way. As Sylvia Plath once wrote: “It’s a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It’s much easier to be somebody else or nobody at all.”
That quote serves as an almost oppressively fitting epigraph for the misty-eyed Netflix movie that Noah Baumbach has made about one of the last true Hollywood stars — or two of them, I should say, as Jay Kelly is so transparent a stand-in for the actor who plays him that he and George Clooney share the same body of work. George Clooney has had to scale back his promotional activities at this year’s Venice International Film Festival for his new movie, “Jay Kelly.”
After arriving in Venice earlier this week, the actor missed the festival’s “Jay Kelly” press conference early Thursday. The festival moderator told attendees Clooney’s absence was due to a “bad sinus infection” and that the star was “very sorry” he could not be there. “Jay Kelly” writer-director Noah Baumbach, for his part, noted with a laugh, “Even movie stars get sick!”
The conference’s moderator also told attendees that Clooney “should” still be able to make an appearance at the film’s red carpet world premiere Thursday night.

Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems has released the official trailer and poster for Stage 6 Films’ Sisu: Road to Revenge, which is set to open in U.S. theaters on November 21, 2025.
The Sisu sequel is written and directed by visionary Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander. Jorma Tommila returns in the lead role, starring alongside Richard Brake and Stephen Lang.
Sisu: Road to Revenge is a wall-to-wall cinematic action event, a sequel to the original sleeper hit Sisu. Returning to the house where his family was brutally murdered during the war, “the man who refuses to die” (Jorma Tommila) dismantles it, loads it on a truck, and is determined to rebuild it somewhere safe in their honor.

Justice for movie stars. We are just a few months shy of when Noah Baumbach’s ode to a fictional movie star is released, with one of our starriest film stars at its center playing said fictional movie star — George Clooney — and plenty more playing less famous characters. “Jay Kelly” will present a modern day Cary Grant (who is even referenced in the teaser trailer) as he struggles to juggle his life as a mega famous actor. As the teaser previews, Jay Kelly is accused of just playing himself — a criticism that has been levied, too, on Clooney, as well as the Netflix movie’s co-star Adam Sandler. And Clooney said he doesn’t “give a shit” if people do think that.
“Have you ever tried playing yourself? It’s hard to do,” Clooney told Vanity Fair, co-opting a line from “Jay Kelly.”

Robert Downey Jr.’s first non-mcu movie after Avengers: Endgame stumbled right out of the gate when it released in 2020, but it only took 5 years for the tables to turn on Dolittle as it now storms the Netflix global streaming charts (FlixPatrol).
The fantasy adventure film has all the looks and feels of a Disney movie, along with a who’s who cast of Hollywood veterans that could make one’s head swoon. But in contrast to what a big-budget, commercial, and family-friendly film like Dolittle can achieve, the film failed both critically as well as at the box office.
As Downey’s first non-mcu movie after Avengers: Endgame, it is slightly disconcerting to see Dolittle rank 4th on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies, as of August 6, 2025.

Robin Williams was one of the most beloved actors of his time. While getting his start as a stand-up comedian, he was known for his ability to oscillate between genres and styles. That is, he was equally iconic, playing the emotional role of John Keating in Dead Poets Society as he was in the comedy Mrs. Doubtfire.
Williams also took on some iconic roles as a voice actor. Most notably, he provided his talents for the voice of the Genie in Aladdin. Songs like "Friend Like Me" were even more elevated by their good writing, with Williams' comedic and electric voice acting imbued into the story.
Williams was once in an odd project with Jennifer Coolidge. While getting her start a couple of decades ago, Coolidge has also gotten more famous in recent years, primarily due to her work on The White Lotus. This year, she was also in the kids' movie A Minecraft Movie.

With Adam Sandler recently reprising a beloved comedy role in Happy Gilmore 2, the actor’s next Netflix film shows off more of his range.
Ahead of the Nov. 14 theatrical premiere of their film Jay Kelly, which then moves to the streamer on Dec. 5, George Clooney praised his co-star as more than “just some goofy comedian” in the Noah Baumbach comedy-drama.
“This film, more than any film Adam has done, shows what a beautiful, heartfelt, soulful actor he is—I kept telling the cast, ‘Don’t call him Sand Man. Don’t talk to him like he’s just some goofy comedian. He’s actually a really beautiful, wonderful actor,'” he told Vanity Fair.
“Because of what his paycheck is, which is doing big goofy comedies, when he does these other, beautiful, Uncut Gems kinds of movies, it reminds people of that,” added Clooney. “He’s not just a good comedian.

If there's one thing we're a sucker for here at Empire, it's movies. And if there's two, then it's movies about the movies, too. Babylon, The Fabelmans, Hail, Caesar!, Stan & Ollie — you name it, we're in. So as you can imagine, the prospect of George Clooney, Laura Dern, and Adam Sandler (now in serious Sandman mode following this summer's Happy Gilmore 2) leading a Noah Baumbach movie about an ageing movie star and his manager travelling through Europe, reckoning with their lives and legacy, has us very hyped indeed. And if the first trailer for Jay Kelly is anything to go by, then Baumbach's Netflix bound, Emily Mortimer co-written drama is absolutely worth getting hyped for. Check it out below;
Well, we hope The Dolby Theatre has a Jay Kelly row booked out for next year's Oscars, because that 100% looks to be where this one's headed. Seriously, all the...

Netflix's Jay Kelly, the next entry in Noah Baumbach's filmography, just got a trailer that unveils an unusual coming-of-age story that stars George Clooney and Adam Sandler. The unexpected pairing seems like the perfect match for a film that follows an actor and his manager confronting their past and present while traveling abroad in Europe.
Netflix has released the first teaser for Jay Kelly, which stars Clooney, Sandler, Laura Dern, and a bevy of familiar faces from Hollywood. It's a rather vague trailer for the film, but it does pull the veil over the comedic and satirical tone that Clooney leans into in the beautifully shot footage. Baumbach, who co-wrote Jay Kelly alongside Emily Mortimer, tends to make films about artists and their personal struggles. He isn't reinventing the wheel here, but perhaps the duo of Clooney and Sandler can provide an exciting new canvas for Baumbach to work with.

“Jay Kelly,” Noah Baumbach’s return to directing after “White Noise,” already has proven to be an awards contender. George Clooney is hitting back at critics who question his range as an actor.
Speaking to Vanity Fair for a preview piece on Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, the two-time Oscar winner didn’t mince words when addressing criticism that his characters are tantamount to playing versions of himself onscreen.
“Do people say that I only play myself? I don’t give a sh–,” the Good Night, and Good Luck actor said. “There aren’t that many guys in my age group that are allowed to do both broad comedies like O Brother [Where Art Though?] and then do Michael Clayton or Syriana [for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award]. So if that means I’m playing myself all the time, I don’t give a sh–.”
Echoing a quote from the upcoming Jay Kelly — where Clooney portrays a 60-something movie star reflecting on his personal and professional life — he added, “Have you ever tried playing yourself? It’s hard to do.

James Gunn has made some big movies, like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. But in a recent interview with French outlet Konbini, he didn’t talk about superheroes. Instead, he talked about a small bear in a blue coat.
During the interview, Gunn stopped at a display for Paddington in Peru and admitted he hadn’t seen it yet. But he didn’t hold back when talking about the previous film in the series. “Paddington 2 is a classic film,” he said. “It’s one of the greatest movies ever made. People think I’m being ironic when I say that, but I’m telling the truth.”
That’s a strong take, but he’s far from the only one who feels that way.
Paddington 2, which came out in 2017, is a live-action and animated comedy directed by Paul King. He also co-wrote it with Simon Farnaby.

Through its wildly comic, furiously creative, and intensely moving facade, Terry Gilliam’s 1985 film Brazil ponders a future made to sustain a draconian past molded by inequality. In this dystopia, the rich, having long knelt at the altar of radical capitalistic tyranny, spend their days having their flesh stretched, sliced, and injected with ultraviolet potions, while the working class types, files, signs, and stamps its way through pointless paperwork.
Overrun by communicative ducts, coated wires, cement and metals, and magnified, miniature computer screens, the future conjured up here averts the familiar prophecy of an anaesthetized, plastic world overrun by rampantly advancing technology. Indeed, men—who see such technology as an affront to their fiscal station and take the pecuniary gain of the morbid, perverse 1% as their modus operandi—unmistakably run the future of Gilliam’s film. New technology is expensive, and paper is cheap.

It’s hard not to marvel at the brilliance of Love, Death & Robots. From its direction to the art and sound design, each chapter showcases a wealth of talent, built over more than six years. The latest volume also corrects last season’s misstep by reintroducing various animation styles.
The techniques are stunning, and the craftsmanship remains top-tier. However, the series is beginning to show signs of creative burnout—losing some of its original spark, recycling ideas, and forgetting the sense of fun that once defined it.
