The movie What Women Want (2000) was originally written for him to star in with a tentative 1996 release date and was in development at Disney's Touchstone Pictures who also produced his hit series Home Improvement (1991). However his commitments to that series and the films Jungle 2 Jungle (1997) and For Richer or Poorer (1997) forced him to decline. The script was eventually put in turnaround and was sold to Paramount Pictures with Mel Gibson taking over the role originally intended for Allen.

Shares his birth last name, "Dick", with the leader of the rock group Paul Revere & The Raiders, who was born Paul Revere Dick.
