Kirsten Dunst Shares Update on Her Son After His “Serious Health Scare” While She Was Filming Overseas
Image
Early this year, Kirsten Dunst experienced “every parent’s nightmare.”

In an interview with Town & Country magazine, Dunst recalled her four-year-old son James, whom she shares with actor Jesse Plemons, experiencing a “serious health scare” while she was in Budapest filming The Entertainment System Is Down. While filming overseas, Plemons and their two sons came to stay, and they enrolled their older son, Ennis, in school, but James endured his health issue.

While they don’t disclose the specifics of his health concern, the Civil War actress recalls the incident being like the movie “Final Destination, where you’re imagining all the things that could go wrong, worst-case scenarios happening to your child,” she said. “I have never seen that movie. But I know the concept. That’s how it feels to be a mother at times.”

Though everyone is “fine now,” Dunst admitted that “it was an extremely...

The Narrow Road To The Deep North TV Review: Jacob Elordi is masterful in Justin Kurzel’s limited series
Image
Plot: The Narrow Road to the Deep North is a savagely beautiful five-part series charting the life of Dorrigo Evans, through his passionate love affair with Amy Mulvaney, his time held captive in a Pow camp, and his later years spent as a revered surgeon and reluctant war hero. An intimate character study of a complex man, a compelling portrayal of the courage and cruelty of war, and an unforgettable love story that sustains one through the darkest of times.

Review: War is hell, and I do not think a film or television series has ever deviated from that sentiment. While the horrors of battle and conflict have been central to screen productions for a century, some filmmakers still manage to find new ways to give us a glimpse of what it is like for the enlisted who have served throughout history. Based on the Booker Prize-winning novel by Richard Flanagan,...

‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’ Review: Jacob Elordi in Justin Kurzel’s Haunting Contemplation of the Losses of Love and War
Image
Following Nitram and The Order, Justin Kurzel goes from strength to strength with his riveting first detour into episodic television, The Narrow Road to the Deep North. While a current of unflinching violence runs through the director’s work, seldom if ever has the blunt shock of bloodletting played in such haunting counterpart to the pathos of brutalized humanity as it does in this adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s 2014 Booker Prize-winning novel. There’s a lingering soulfulness here that feels new to Kurzel’s work, distilled in an intensely moving lead performance from Jacob Elordi.

Big, bold and strikingly cinematic, the limited series’ first two of five 45-minute episodes were presented as a special gala at the Berlin Film Festival ahead of its Australian premiere on Prime Video in April. Most other major markets will follow, though Sony has not yet closed a deal for U.S. rights. With Elordi’s star on the rise,...

Keanu Reeves' Dark Satire 'The Entertainment System Is Down' Takes Flight
Image
In some exciting news for Keanu Reeves fans, principal photography has commenced for Ruben Östlund's next film, The Entertainment System Is Down. Much like his previous work, Triangle of Sadness, the movie is set to be a dark satirical film with an impressive ensemble cast. The movie stars the John Wick actor alongside Kirsten Dunst, and Daniel Brühl, and filming is set to start in Budapest and last 70 days, concluding sometime around May (via Deadline). Given that the director's previous film was awarded the Palme d'Or in 2022, there is plenty of hype surrounding the movie.

The Entertainment System Is Down centers around passengers on a flight who are informed that, as the title implies, the in-flight entertainment system is no longer working. Now lacking any distractions over a long flight, the passengers are forced to confront boredom, and perhaps even some personal reflection, as the social dynamics of a...

Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down begins production
Ruben Östlund
Ruben Östlund’s The Entertainment System Is Down – a dark satire starring Kirsten Dunst, Keanu Reeves and Daniel Brühl – has now started filming.

Here’s a project that has sounded rather enticing, ever since it was first announced in April of last year. Ruben Östlund, the filmmaker behind Force Majeure and Triangle Of Sadness has assembled an exciting cast for what looks to be a story examining the darker impulses of human nature.

A24 is backing The Entertainment System Is Down, and the boutique studio is really backing Östlund in what we’re hoping retains the filmmaker’s arthouse sensibilities while also appealing to a broader audience. As well as footing the bill for an incredible ensemble of acting talent, A24 has also backed the purchase of a retired Boeing 747 for the film, which is presumably sitting on a studio backlot somewhere in Budapest as Östlund uses it to make his movie.

Image
Quick Links What Is 'Territory' About? Who Is Nolan Brannock in 'Territory?' Why 'Territory' Season 2 Needs More Nolan, Explained

New to Netflix on October 24, 2024, Territory is an Australian neo-Western TV series that enjoyed popular success on the platform. Directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek), the six-part series concerns the biggest global cattle farm, Marianne Station, and the Lawson family, who have controlled it for generations. When the Lawsons launch a search for the next heir to run the ranch, the show resembles a dramatic mix of Succession and Yellowstone as cut-throat family members, friends, and acquaintances vie for the business.

While yet to be officially renewed by Netflix, one character has become more popular than any among Territory fans. If the show continues on Netflix beyond Season 1, the ambitious Native American Nolan Brannock (Clarence Ryan) needs to be featured more often. Attempting to start his own cattle business,...

Territory Ending Explained, Who Survives Australian Cattle Station Succession Drama?
Image
Territory begins with a death. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that not everyone in this series — about the fight for power in Australia’s unforgiving and awe-inspiring Northern Territory — makes it to the end of the finale.

The story follows the fight for control over Marianne Station, the largest cattle station in Australia — and a billion-dollar empire — after heir Daniel Lawson (Jake Ryan) is found dead and patriarch Colin (Robert Taylor) must choose a new successor. In line are screwup alcoholic oldest son, Graham (Michael Dorman); Graham’s ambitious wife from a rival family, Emily (Anna Torv); Graham’s twentysomething prodigal son, Marshall (Sam Corlett); and Graham and Emily’s whipsmart teenage daughter, Susie (Philippa Northeast).

Circling Marianne are billionaire mining magnate Sandra Kirby (Sara Wiseman); notorious cattle thief (and Emily’s brother) Hank Hodge (Dan Wyllie); Indigenous station owner Nolan Brannock (Clarence Ryan); and nefarious cattle...

Territory Cast & Character Guide
Image
Netflix's latest Western TV drama, Territory, features a strong ensemble cast centered around the main Lawson family. Described frequently as a Yellowstone-like family epic but set in the northern regions of Australia, Territory tells the story of a power struggle following the death of Daniel Lawson, the owner of the Marianne Cattle Station. With no clear candidate set to take his place, a conflict ensues between rival cattle farmers, gangsters, mining magnates, and members of the Lawson family. Headlined by Anna Torv and Michael Dorman, the performances are undoubtedly the show's strong suit.

To construct an authentic feeling for the series, Territory's main cast is made up entirely of Australian and New Zealand-based actors. So, while there may be a handful of fresh faces for audiences watching on Netflix, there are also some familiar stars playing prevalent roles. Actors Anna Torv, Michael Dorman, and Robert Taylor have all...

Viaplay Results: Focus On Core Ops Working Slowly

Viaplay’s focus on doing what it does best willed out in its latest quarterly results, with total turnover down slightly but turnover in core operations increasing by a similar margin. Since the exit of former CEO Anders Jensen amidst financial turmoil last year, the Scandi outfit has been focused on making far less original content and supercharging sports rights. Today, Q2 turnover was shown to have declined a smidgeon to SEK4.49B ($424M), while core turnover rose by a similar amount to SEK4.29B. In further signs of green shoots a year on from Jensen’s departure, operating income, while still in the red, was only minus SEK70M, compared to minus SEK273M in Q2 2023. Once cinemas reopen, Universal Pictures intends to give Dirt Music a wide release – something director Gregor Jordan is thankful for.

Shot in Western Australia and based on Tim Winton’s Miles Franklin-winning novel, the film made its world at the Toronto International Film Festival last September.

It stars Kelly Macdonald as Georgie, a sometime sailor, diver and nurse who is stranded in a remote fishing town with Jim (David Wenham), a man she doesn’t love, and his young sons whose dead mother she can never replace. A reckless moment leads Georgie to an intense, sexually charged affair with Lu Fox (Garrett Hedlund), an enigmatic loner, musician and poacher who is traumatised by a tragic accident from his past.

When Lu retreats into the wilderness, Georgie embarks on a journey to bring him back with the unlikely help of Jim,...

Jungle’s Jason Burrows calls for better deals and training for screenwriters
Image
Jason Burrows.

Jungle Entertainment CEO Jason Burrows advocates one key structural change if the Australian screen industry is to take full advantage of an expected, post-pandemic boom in demand for scripted content: Treat writers much better.

Burrows is confident Australia can produce drama which competes with the best in the world if writers are given more time for development, greater creative control, more training and mentoring and higher fees.

“If we don’t, we might as well stop making drama,” he said in a webinar with Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner yesterday.

“We should do that even it means Australia makes one less drama each year, as it will pay off in the long run for all of us.”

Too often, he says, projects go into production or pre-production without finished scripts due to numerous factors including network pressures to fill a gap in the schedule, limited development fees and investment,...

Jocelyn Moorhouse explores the line between sanity and madness in ‘Wakefield’
Jocelyn Moorhouse at an event for The Dressmaker (2015)
Jocelyn Moorhouse with Dop Martin McGrath on the ‘Wakefield’ set.

Jocelyn Moorhouse was shooting the ABC’s Stateless when Jungle Entertainment offered her the gig of set-up director of the ABC drama Wakefield.

The concept was unlike anything she’d ever heard of, centering on the interaction between staff and patients at a Blue Mountains psychiatric hospital, leavened with musical numbers and tap dancing, so she was hooked.

Brit Rudi Dharmalingam plays Nik, a gifted psych nurse in the eight-episode show created by Kristen Dunphy, who is the showrunner with Sam Meikle, produced by Shay Spencer and Ally Henville for Jungle Entertainment and BBC Studios.

The sanest person in a pretty crazy place, Nik is confronted by a dark secret from his past when a song gets stuck in his head.

Reuniting with the director after collaborating on the Seven Network’s Wanted, Geraldine Hakewill plays a psychiatrist, with Mandy McElhinney as the head nurse.

First Trailer for Australian Kart Racing Movie 'Go!' with William Lodder
"You'll drive when I say so!" Roadshow Films has debuted an official trailer for an Australian movie titled simply Go!, about go-kart racing. The feel-good family movie is about a wild young man named Jack who moves to a small town in Western Australia with his single mother. He takes up competitive go-kart racing, but must work with an eccentric team to help him overcome his own problems and win the championship. Starring William Lodder as Jack, and a full cast with Frances O'Connor, Anastasia Bampos, Darius Amarfio-Jefferson, Richard Roxburgh, Cooper Van Grootel, and Dan Wyllie. This looks as cheesy and as predictable as anything from Hollywood, with all the usual "talented but problematic" sports movie tropes. At least the helmet-cam Pov looks like fun. "Go! is a high-octane Australian family film with heart." Here's the first official trailer for Owen Trevor's Go! movie, direct from Roadshow's YouTube...

Russell Crowe's Skinhead Drama Romper Stomper is Getting a TV Series
Russell Crowe got his big break in 1992 in a crazy, violent, and controversial Australian skinhead indie film called Romper Stomper. I was blown away by this movie when I first saw it and Crowe gave such an amazing terrifying performance. He played a neo-Nazi skinhead in the film named Hando. If you've never seen this movie before, it's definitely worth checking out.

According to THR, the film's creator Geoffrey Wright is now adapting his movie into a limited run TV series. It seems like the kind of story that would work great for series. Here's a description of what the series will entail:

The high stakes crime drama/political thriller explores the human face of extremism, picking up on the prescient themes and story of Wright’s classic film, following a new generation of the activist right, its anti-fascist counterparts and the multicultural fabric of a country that they threaten to tear apart.

Full Trailer for Australian Coming-of-Age 'Jasper Jones' with Levi Miller
"We don't know who's out there!" The first trailer has debuted for an Australian coming-of-age drama titled Jasper Jones, adapted from Craig Silvey’s bestselling Australian novel of the same name. The film stars Levi Miller as a 14-year-old boy living in a small town, who is awoken by a local man named Jasper Jones, played by Aaron L. McGrath. Jasper leads him deep into the forest and shows him something that will change his life forever, setting them both on a dangerous journey to solve a mystery that will consume the entire community. This kind of sounds a bit like Stand by Me by way of Australia, and the trailer has a bit of that feeling. This also stars Hugo Weaving, Toni Collette, Angourie Rice, Matt Nable, Dan Wyllie, and Myles Pollard. Not sure when this film will show up in the Us, but it actually looks pretty damn good.
