Originally billed as Johnnie Wright [of Johnnie and Jack, the country music singing duo], he changed the spelling to Johnny after the death of his partner Jack Anglin - who was married to Wright's sister - in a car crash while on the way to the funeral of Patsy Cline in 1963.

Father of Bobby Wright & Ruby Wright.

His singer son, Bobby Wright, used the name John Wright when he was a regular on television's La marina de McHale (1962).
