‘Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter’ 4K Uhd Review
Image
Stars: Horst Janson, John Carson, Shane Briant, Caroline Munro, John Cater, Lois Daine, Ian Hendry, Wanda Ventham | Written and Directed by Brian Clemens

Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter stands out as one of Hammer Horror’s most unique and compelling entries, especially when viewed within the broader context of the studio’s extensive catalogue. As a longtime fan of Hammer films – everything from the gothic gloom of Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein to the more outlandish offerings in their later years – Captain Kronos feels like a refreshing jolt of originality that hinted at a new direction the studio never fully got to explore.

What sets Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter apart is its genre-blending confidence. While most Hammer horrors comfortably bask in the gothic trappings of foggy graveyards, haunted castles, and blood-dripping fangs, this film veers into swashbuckling territory, borrowing from spaghetti westerns and samurai films as much as it does from vampire lore.

Tim Blake Nelson Talks Upcoming Western ‘Shoot’ and ‘Captain America’: ‘I Couldn’t Respect Martin Scorsese More, but I Disagree When He Derides Marvel. It’s Not Over’
Image
Tim Blake Nelson is about to shoot a “spectacular” Western “Shoot” in Spain, directed by Guillermo Navarro. Guillermo Del Toro’s regular cinematographer, he already won an Academy Award for “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

“We have a great cast and a script written by British writer Ian Wilson. Westerns change, reflecting a cultural moment when it’s made. ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘Power of the Dog’… each generation needs to furnish its own take on film genres. This one is about the power of the gun as a corrupting force,” he reveals.

“It’s absolutely a current script, but it’s 100% true to its time. We are starting to shoot in November. The great thing about Westerns is that they require big vistas, but good Westerns don’t have to cost $100 million. We made ‘Old Henry’ for $1.2 million. It’s a way of having a superhero film with natural environments and no visual effects.”

Rami Malek To Star In Thriller Amateur From Slow Horses Director James Hawes

Rami Malek is circling his next lead role in the thriller "Amateur" from 20th Century Studios. Deadline reports that James Hawes — who directed all six episodes of the first season of "Slow Horses," the Gary Oldman-led Apple TV+ series — has also boarded the project. Right now, it's still in the development stages, with Malek in line to executive produce alongside Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson.

The plot of "Amateur" reportedly "follows a CIA cryptographer who, after his wife is tragically killed in a London terrorist attack, demands his bosses go after them." The CIA isn't having any of that, and "when it becomes clear they won't act due to conflicting internal priorities," the cryptographer takes matters into his own hands and "blackmails the agency into training him."

Malek is no stranger to thriller territory, having starred in "Mr. Robot" for four seasons before the show ended in 2019. Since winning...

Antibodies from monkeys shows promise against Covid variants
Image
New York, Aug 12 (Ians) US scientists have identified antibodies in monkeys that may help in the development of next-generation vaccines which can offer additional protection against emerging Sars-CoV-2 variants and other Sars-related viruses.

The team from Scripps Research Institute in California identified the antibodies, from rhesus macaque monkeys, that are effective against many different Sars-CoV-2 variants, as well as other Sars viruses like Sars-CoV-1, the highly lethal virus that caused an outbreak in 2003.

They found these neutralising antibodies recognise a viral spike region that is relatively more conserved, meaning that it is present across many different Sars viruses and is therefore less likely to mutate over time.

The findings, published in Science Translational Medicine, showed that certain animals are surprisingly more able to make these types of “pan-sars virus” antibodies than humans, giving scientists clues as to how to make better vaccines.

“If we can design vaccines that elicit the...

‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile’ Trailer Shows Shawn Mendes as a Singing, Dancing Reptile (Video)
Javier Bardem, Scoot McNairy, Constance Wu, Shawn Mendes, and Winslow Fegley in Lilo, Lilo, cocodrilo (2022)
What exactly is “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile?” It’s a kids musical about a crocodile! He wears a scarf, and he can sing! And he’s voiced by pop artist Shawn Mendes.

On Wednesday, Sony Pictures released the first trailer for “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile,” which is a live-action movie featuring Mendes as the singing, dancing, CGI reptile based on the children’s book series by Bernard Waber.

The film follows the Primm family, played by Constance Wu, Scoot McNairy and Winslow Fegley, as they move to New York City and find waiting for them in their bathroom tub Lyle… who we’ll remind you is a CGI singing crocodile. He also loves caviar. And the trailer shows the Primm family at one point making a painting of Lyle, as well as him sticking his head out a NYC cab like a puppy while wearing a Florida Gators jersey, causing countless unseen car wrecks.

Saoirse Ronan at an event for La huésped (2013)
Director Josie Rourke Turned to Abbey Road Studios to Create the Final Sound Mix for ‘Mary Queen of Scots’
Saoirse Ronan at an event for La huésped (2013)
“Mary queen of scots,” the period drama about the life of Mary Stuart, played by Saoirse Ronan, and that of her English cousin Queen Elizabeth I, portrayed by Margot Robbie, may mark Josie Rourke’s feature film directorial debut, but as the artistic director of London’s prestigious Donmar Warehouse, where she’s staged acclaimed and groundbreaking productions, she’s no stranger to dealing with sound and music.

“In theater, sound is so important,” she says. “One of a director’s most basic functions is telling whether an actor on stage can be heard. So we spend a lot of time thinking about acoustics, and then also how music functions in a scene. And while film is such a visual medium, I think music and sound are even more important in movies, and how you use them to help tell the story.”

Rourke says that her initial vision for the...

‘The Phantom of the Opera’ (1962) is a beautiful, tense rendition that suffers from a poor final act
The Phantom of the Opera

Written by John Elder

Directed by Terence Fisher

U.K., 1962

Hammer Film Productions is one of the oldest, most respected film studios to ever earn significant popularity. Founded in 1934 in England, the production company earned an outstanding sequence of success in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s by re-appropriating several well known horror stories like The Mummy and Dracula, as well as concocting several original concepts. Even in 2015, long after the studio’s heyday, cinephiles continue to look back at and appreciate the work Hammer put out during those three illustrious decades. Being such specialists in breathing new life into old horror tales, it would only seem befitting that they would try their hand at a new adaptation of French author Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera novel.

Transplanting the action over to home soil in London, this iteration of The Phantom of the Opera...
