I’m talking about the deep cuts, the movies whispered about online, the ones a friend of a friend saw that scarred them for life. Disturbing an audience isn’t as easy as it sounds, either. Even the most disturbing movies ever made are operating with a thematic heft that far exceeds mere exploitation. A movie is just a movie, after all, so to accomplish that necessary suspension of disbelief and really get an audience feeling all icky and disturbed, a filmmaker’s got to bring their A-game.

In Young Hearts, 14-year-old Elias (Lou Goossens) sees his seemingly idyllic life in the Belgian countryside crack when another boy around the same age, Alexander (Marius De Saeger), moves in across the street. Elias is immediately drawn to Alexander, whose insouciance with regard to all things queer both puzzles and marvels Elias. At one point, after cycling through the countryside, as they eat cherries by a lake, Alexander responds to Elias’s questions about his relationship status, telling him that he was in one with a boy last year.

The film wallows in a fantasy of Northern European rurality where childhood freedom is granted by hands-off parenting and bicycles that never need to be locked. The Belgian series High Tides (Knokke Off as it’s known in Belgium) is finally returning to Netflix for its second season. First premiering in December 2023, the Dutch drama follows a group of wealthy teens facing the harsh realities of adulthood. It entered the top 10s in 45 countries and spent 3 weeks in the global top 10 charts.

The release date for High Tides season 2 was initially set for January 31st, 2025, although the show ultimately was a no-show on Netflix’s January 2025 schedule list, and no public announcement has come about when it will arrive. However, we’ve now got word that the second season shifted its release by around two months and is now set to touch down on Netflix globally on March 21st. Netflix has already added the new season in the Netherlands, where it’s now spent 3 weeks in their top 10s.

Films Boutique has sold Anthony Schatteman’s Berlinale title Young Hearts to a raft of distributors around the world, including key European territories.

Belgian director Schatteman’s film, which centres on a 13-year-old boy who feels attracted to his new neighbour, won a special mention in the Generation Kplus section of the Berlinale.

Young Hearts has been acquired by I Wonder Pictures in Italy, Flamingo Films for Spain, Epicentre (France), Angel Distribution (Denmark), Salzgeber (Germany and Austria), Cinobo (Greece), Lev Cinema (Israel), Cine Canibal (Latin America), Lucky Dogs (Sweden), MCf Megacom (ex-Yugoslavia) and A2B Entertainment (Switzerland).

Casting directors take note: Lou Goossens in this first feature film role is an actor to watch out for, naturalistic and able to convey subtle shades of inner turmoil, despite his young age. Goossens plays Elias, a 14-year-old living in rural Belgium with his loving and mostly normal family — the slight exception being his father, Luk (Geert Van Rampelberg), who, while a pretty straight arrow in a personal sense, is enjoying unlikely success as a midlife pop sensation, with a hit single in the pipeline.

The film opens with dad belting out his signature number, which is all about how “first love lights the fire in your heart,” which of course turns out to be a decent summary of the film. Shortly after, the family get a new neighbor in the form of Alexander (Marius De Saeger).

This coming-of-age drama gently probes the insecurities experienced by a teenager as he explores his sexuality while, thankfully, not representing him as some sort of tragic figure as is still so frequently the case in cinema. It may be a little sentimental at the edges, but the heart of Anthony Schatteman’s film is in the right place.

Elias lives with his mum (Emilie De Roo), dad (Geert Van Rampelberg) and older brother in the Dutch countryside. Life is fairly unremarkable, save for the fact his dad is a semi-famous singer. Generally speaking, Elias kicks about with his gang of pals, including his sort-of girlfriend Valerie (Saar Rogiers) in between visits to the farm his grandad (Dirk Van Dijck) owns.

Berlin-based Films Boutique has boarded Anthony Schatteman’s Young Hearts, which world premieres next month in the Berlinale’s Generation Kplus strand.

Young Hearts centres on a 13-year-old boy who feels attracted to his new neighbour. The film marks the directorial debut of Belgian director Anthony Schatteman and won the work in progress award at Connext 2023. Schatteman most recently directed the Irish series Northern Lights for Lionsgate. His youth series Panna was released in 2021, airing on Goplay.be for Sbs Belgium, and his series 2de Zit played Belgian streaming platform Streamz.

Sumerian has acquired the North American rights to brutal coming-of-age story “Mascot,” which had its world premiere in January at Slamdance, and its international premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam the same month.

Sumerian is planning a limited theatrical release this year under the English title “Fortunate Son.” The pickup marks the second acquisition for Sumerian’s new film and streaming division, which launched this year.

Sumerian founder Ash Avildsen said the film is “a dark, brutally authentic and beautifully shot independent film centered around troubled youth in unorthodox households. It will undoubtedly strike a nerve with audiences who appreciate gritty arthouse drama, as it did with me.”

REinvent International Sales has inked a raft of deals across its slate of high-concept series, including “Transport” (pictured) and “Enemy of the People,” rolling off of MipTV.

The company has sold both “Transport,” which is penned by Auli Mantila (“Silver Stars”), and the Icelandic comedy series “Ordinary People” to AMC Networks Southern Europe for Spain and Portugal.

“Transport” is an eight-part TV show following a young journalist investigating a chip found in baby food. She crosses paths with an insurance investigator and a bank manager who are both connected to the case. The series stars Emmi Parviainen (“Shadow Lines”), Maria Heiskanen (“Everlasting Moments”), Pirkko Hämäläinen (“Devil’s Bride”) and Geert van Rampelberg (“De Infiltrant”). Miia Haavisto (“Tom of Finland”) and Tia Talli (“Nurses”) at Tekele are producing “Transport.”

Red Light is a European crime drama split between Belgium and the Netherlands, starring Carice Van Houten, Maaike Neuville and Halina Reijn (Black Book). Set in the sex clubs and brothels of Amsterdam and Antwerp, the series follows their characters Sylvia Steenhuyzen, Evi Vercruyssen and Esther Vinkel as their lives become entwined in the violence of the sex industry.

The series kick of with Detective Evi Vercruyssen (Neuville) being assigned the case of a murdered prostitute. The woman had worked in a club run by Sylvia (Van Houten) and her abusive lover Ingmar (Geert Van Rampelberg). Helsinki-based Tekele has unveiled the international trailer of its first premium crime drama “Transport”, which is in the running for this year’s Nordisk Film & TV Fond Prize for best Nordic TV screenplay. The prestigious award will be handed out Feb. 2 during Göteborg’s two-day TV Drama Vision confab.

Madrid — Be-Entertainment has acquired international distribution rights to Canneseries competition contender “Studio Tarara,” the scripted series debut of Tim Van Aelst who has won non-scripted or comedy Intl. Emmy Awards in 2018 (“Did You Get the Message”?), 2014 (“What If?”) and 2011 (“Benidorm Bastards”).

The last sparked an NBC remake, “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers,” developed by Van Aelst.

To be introduced to buyers at MipTV, “Studio Tarara” also marks the move into fiction for Be Entertainment, headed by former Talpa Global sales head Gepke Nederlof, and set up in 2017 as a non-fiction format company.

Canneseries, the annual TV festival running alongside the Miptv content market in Cannes, has unveiled the competition line-up for its second edition (April 5-10).

The first two epsidoes from 10 new international series will screen in the main competition.

Titles include Channing Powell’s London-set psychological thriller The Feed for Amazon and Liberty Global. David Thewlis stars in the dystopian tale as the inventor of a brain implant that allows people to share thoughts and emotions alongside Guy Burnet, Michelle Fairley and Nina Toussaint-White as his family members.

Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.

Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

Cannes Series has revealed the lineup, jury and masterclasses for its second edition, which takes place alongside the Mip TV market on the French Riviera.

Among ten series in competition at the TV festival are Netflix’s German show How To Sell Drugs Online and Amazon’s UK series The Feed with Michelle Fairley and David Thewlis. The Treatment

Premièred in the UK by Frightfest, released in cinemas early this year and now out on DVD, The Treatment is a Belgian crime thriller with a very dark core, exploring the subject of child abuse. Its hero, Nick (Geert Van Rampelberg), had a brother who was abducted when they were kids, and now, as a police detective, he’s faced with a case that brings back troubling memories. If the story sounds familiar, that’s probably because it was a best selling novel before being adapted for the screen. This version is directed by Hans Herbots, best known in the UK for his work on hit TV series The Spiral, so we arranged to talk about how it came about.

A warm and friendly person whom you might not expect to be telling dark stories like this, Hans is also a father of three, a fact very much in evidence.

Horribly convincing performances make this exploitative abduction thriller hard to watch

This overcranked paedophile/child abduction thriller (a Nordic-influenced Belgian/Dutch production from British author Mo Hayder’s bestseller) is as well made as it is occasionally unwatchable. Geert Van Rampelberg is convincingly rattled as Nick Cafmeyer, a detective whose brother was snatched as a child, and whose spectre he now chases through child-abuse cases. Investigating a horrific crime bound up with local tales of “the troll”, Cafmeyer uncovers a web of rape and torture, the details of which become more grotesquely baroque with each foul revelation. His superiors doubt his sanity but oddly we do not; Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners did a much better job of wrong-footing our vigilante instincts, even as it similarly descended into absurdity. Horribly convincing performances add exploitative heft, while Johan Van Essche’s production design makes the Boschian hell seem all too real.

Every so often a movie comes along that’s unspeakably paralyzing and gutwrenching, causing post-credit asphyxiation after your heart jumps straight into your throat. The Treatment is exactly that kind of harrowing, haunting filmmaking that elevates typical crime-drama-storytelling into realms we’d probably be better off never exploring, yet filmmaker Hans Herbots ensures you’ll be glued to your seat whether you like it or not. French sales agent heads to Belgium to set up new company. First slate includes Belgian Hans Herbots’ crime thriller The Treatment.

Long-time Films Distribution sales agent Pamela Leu has launched her own Brussels-based sales company, Be for Films.

Leu left Nicolas Brigaud-Robert and François Yon’s Paris-based Films Distribution on amicable terms last month.

The company will provide some initial back office support while Leu rolls out her first independent slate at Cannes.

“After 11 years of collaboration with Films Distribution, running a company and creating Be for Films was the obvious step to achieve my own dreams and desires for doing business in the film industry,” Leu told ScreenDaily.

Be for Films is the only fully-fledged sales company based within Belgian borders, although state-backed organisations like Wallonie Bruxelles Image and Flanders Image do a lot of promotional work for local productions.

The 2012 Belgian drama (with a bit of comedy), Time Of My Life is written and directed by Nic Balthazar (Ben X).

Based on the true story of Mario Verstraete, the film revolves around a vigorous campaign to legalize euthanasia in Belgium. Just when Mario’s (Koen De Graeve) political career is about to get under stream he is diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis. Told through the eyes of his doctor friend, Thomas (Geert Van Rampelberg), the movie focuses on how Mario and his friends deal with the crisis and come to terms with both the philosophical and profoundly human sides of the issue.

Released in theaters in Belgium, Turkey and The Netherlands in early 2012, Time Of My Life is premiering in the U.S. on DVD. Theatrical reviews of the film in Europe were generally favorable.
