The daughter of musical comedy star Thorpe Bates and the niece of comedian Leonard Henry, this character actress made her radio début in 1936.

Her last on screen appearance was in the penultimate episode of The Young Ones where she and her real-life husband, Brian Oulton, played Neil's parents. Ill-health forced her retirement from acting shortly after and prevented her reprising her role as Hilda Rumpole, when Rumpole Of The Bailey returned in 1987.
