David Spade once suggested to Julia Sweeney that her androgynous Pat character was ahead of their time. “Or behind,” Sweeney replied. “I always thought the joke was mostly about the people around Pat who were so flummoxed, so freaked out. We said at the beginning, the jokes are not on Pat.”
Despite her efforts, today’s audiences didn’t quite see that distinction, she admitted: “If I did it again, I would make Pat more enigmatic and make it clear that it was about the other people.”
A new documentary, We Are Pat, also wrestles with the legacy of Sweeney’s controversial Saturday Night Live character. Director Ro Haber admitted to Rolling Stone that they had complicated feelings about the sketches. “Why am I laughing at something that’s meant to laugh at me? Why do I love Pat? Is Pat a non-binary icon or a transphobic trope of yesteryear?...

Julia Sweeney’s popular Saturday Night Live character Pat gets their plaudits (and some criticism) as a gender non-conforming pioneer in a new clip from the upcoming documentary, We Are Pat, premiering exclusively on Rolling Stone.
Sweeney played Pat throughout her run on SNL in the early Nineties and even got to star in a spin-off film, It’s Pat. The inscrutability of Pat’s androgyny was pushed to comedic extremes, effectively offering prominent, yet thorny representation for gender non-conforming people on television long before the term “nonbinary” was being widely used.

“The Threesome” is quick to establish its rom-com bona fides by opening at a wedding, but like much in Chad Hartigan’s sixth feature, there’s a little something more going on when it sets the stage for a marriage of sensibilities behind the scenes. The director, who is capable of both contemplative dramas (“This Is Martin Bonner”) and raucous comedies (“Morris From America”), tries to strike a balance between screenwriter Ethan Ogilby’s cringe-humor premise of an impromptu ménage à trois and the more serious relationship dynamics it suggests. The results are mixed in ways the filmmakers probably didn’t intend, but they’re at once genuinely intriguing and enormously charming given the talent involved.

When Tom Hanks took the stage late during last night's 50th anniversary celebration of "Saturday Night Live," he appeared to be headed into somber territory. The lights were dimmed to blue, his tone was reverent and, as he worked into his prepared comments, the subject one that hits so very close to home for the show's alumni and friends. "As we celebrate the achievements of the past 50 years," he said, "We must also take a moment to honor those we've lost. Countless members of the 'SNL' community taken too soon." Hanks paused briefly for effect, then continued. "I'm speaking, of course, about 'SNL' characters that have aged horribly."
No comedic institution can last 50 years without finding the third rail on occasion. For "SNL," a sketch comedy series both emerged from and tore apart 1960s counterculture humor, jolting viewers with gasp-inducing gags that seemed to fly under...

Saturday Night Live has poked fun at hundreds of celebrities for their sketches. However, Taylor Swift was not happy with the idea for a sketch they had in 2015.

As a former cast member of Saturday Night Live, Julia Sweeney is known in part for playing "Pat," an androgynous character whose gender was often joked about in recurring sketches. Typically, the humor revolved around other characters speculating on Pat's gender.
At the time, the Pat character was popular enough to get a tie-in feature film greenlit with Sweeney starring in the role. In more recent years, the character (along with the It's Pat film) have come under fire for poking fun at gender identity. While on The View (per Variety), Sweeney reflected on the role, noting that "there was some criticism" leveled against Pat. While she understands where the criticism is coming from, Sweeney also defended Pat, clarifying that the character does not identify as non-binary or transgender — and may not even be a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Julia Sweeney appeared on “The View” ahead of the “SNL” 50th Anniversary special and admitted that she “took it to heart” and “thought about it a lot” when her sketch comedy character Pat was met with controversy from the LGBTQ community. Pat was a recurring character on “SNL” in the early 1990s and headlined the 1994 feature film, “It’s Pat.” The character is an androgynous misfit, with intended humor deriving from those around Pat not being able to figure out Pat’s gender.
“Transparent” creator Joey Soloway made headlines in 2017 for slamming Pat as an “awful piece of anti-trans propaganda.” Soloway said the sketch was a “hateful, hateful, awful thing to do to non-binary people — to create this character that the whole world laughed at openly.”
While Sweeney acknowledged on “The View” that “there was some criticism” of Pat, she reminded viewers that “Pat isn’t trans or non binary.

Julia Sweeney’s “Pat” was a frequent and popular sketch star during the 1990s era of Saturday Night Live, but in recent years the character of indeterminate gender has come under criticism as a mockery of trans and nonbinary people.
Appearing today on ABC’s The View, Sweeney addressed the criticism, saying she “took it to heart” and has “thought about it a lot.”
“Much later, there was some criticism of it,” she said, “but Pat isn’t trans or non binary. Pat is a man or a woman, but you just don’t know which Pat is. That is the joke, but I did understand the criticism, and I took it to heart and thought about it a lot.”
“But even when we were writing all the sketches ,” she continued, “we were really making fun of the other people [in the sketches] not being able to handle the fact that they couldn’t tell.

Sitcoms tend to be short-lived affairs. Most last no more than two seasons, and only the best manage to thrive. It’s a cutthroat niche, and shows generally need some sort of gimmick to survive. Parks and Recreation used its bureaucratic background, while The Office revolutionized workplace comedy. On the other hand, ABC’s Not Dead Yetwas much different.
Casey Johnson and David Windsor’s workplace comedy happily adopted an uncommon fantasy elementand routinely added supernatural intrigue to the plot. Pseudo-ghosts were Not Dead Yet’s gimmick, and they gave the series its charm, wit, and character. However, they essentially disappeared midway through the show’s second season. While this change wasn’t the only reason for its untimely cancelation in 2024, it dealt a massive blow to the otherwise vibrant comedy. Seth MacFarlane Explains Peter Griffin's Startling Confession From a Classic Episode of 'Family Guy'
One of Family Guy's more memorable gags was during Season 4 in the 2006 episode, Untitled Griffin Family History. As the family could possibly drown in a panic room that's flooding, Peter has a major confession to make, "I did not care for The Godfather." His family's reactions are fairly relatable, despite the pending doom.
After the clip had gone viral, series creator and executive producer Seth MacFarlane jumped on X (formerly Twitter) to reveal one of the key lines when Peter was explaining to his stunned family why he didn't care for arguably one of the greatest films in cinematic history, "It insists upon itself."
"Since this has been trending, here's a fun fact: 'It insists upon itself' was a criticism my college film history professor used to explain why he didn't think 'The Sound of Music' was a great film. First-rate teacher, but I never quite followed that one.

After a delay, Family Guy is finally returning, with Season 23 premiering on Sunday Feb. 16, 2025. It will debut at 8 pm Et / Pt, which has long been The Simpsons' time slot, per TheWrap. Rounding out the two-hour block will be Grimsburg Season 2, The Great North Season 5, and Krapopolis Season 2.
The new episode will be a riff on Top Gun, with Peter playing Maverick as he mourns the death of Goose (Joe). His relationship with Charlie (Lois) is explored along with his son, Rooster (Chris). Given Family Guy's winning record with spoofs on beloved movies, expect this one to be a classic.
The show recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, despite being canceled twice since its series premiere on Jan. 31, 1999.
When Does 'The Simpsons' Return?
Just a few weeks back, it was reported that The Simpsons would lose its coveted Sundays at 8 pm Et / Pt time slot, and would be moved to Wednesday nights.

“Nonexistent problem, ineffective solution.”
This was the sage advice legendary writer Jim Downey would give to young writers like David Mandel when they were working on commercial parodies for Saturday Night Live. “That was often the key to a great commercial parody,” says Mandel, who wrote on the show from 1992 to 1995. “I loved making the commercial parodies. The chance to go off and make a little film was the opposite of SNL. You could edit it and be precise with it. It was exciting.”

The 2024 Family Guy holiday special, "The Gift of the White Guy," delivers the same irreverent comedy the show has become known for, with nothing very special about it. That is not to say the episode is bad, it has several laugh-out-loud moments, but in a series with well over 400 episodes, it becomes a challenge just to improve on itself. And with plenty of holiday specials in the past 25 years, this episode doesn't break the mold.
Family Guy is an animated series following the eccentric Griffin family. As Saturday Night Live prepares for the comedy birthday party to end all comedy birthday parties, expect plenty of classic characters to get their encore flowers. Maybe Wayne and Garth will get in one last schwing! Stefon might reignite his love affair with Seth Meyers. Eddie Murphy could break out Mr. Robinson or Gumby.
But thanks to evolving cultural norms around comedy, these 10 SNL characters are virtually guaranteed not to get an invite to the festivities. Sorry, Merv the Perv, you’re not on the list.
1 Pat
Pat was Julia Sweeney’s signature SNL character, showing up 12 times to repeat the same tired joke: No one could tell if the androgynous character was a man or a woman. Playing gender identity for laughs isn’t cool — and it doesn’t help that whiny, whinging Pat was insufferable.

"Saturday Night Live" has been going on for 50 seasons now, so they've had their fair share of bad hosts. Sometimes the host is simply not that comfortable with live acting -- looking at you, January Jones or Jacob Elordi -- and sometimes the host has the bad luck of getting a cold at the worst possible moment, like what seemingly happened to poor Jean Smart in the season 50 premiere. Other times the host is bad because, well, they're just kind of a bad person.
Case in point: Steven Seagal, who hosted in April 1991 and helped deliver an episode so terrible that it got him banned from the show forever. Over three decades later, most "SNL" fans are happy to just pretend the episode never happened, because ite was a trainwreck in a way that wasn't even that fun or interesting.

One of the hardest parts of working in the film industry is the fact that your work, no matter how hard you've worked on it and/or how proud you are of it, can't move forward until you let other people pass judgment on it. That screenplay that you've poured every ounce of your creative energy into for months is finished, and now you've got to get notes from your friends, your agent, and anyone who might be interested in working on it. It's terrifying. And the situation gets more fraught when you're showing a cut of the film. You've been working with an editor to craft a compelling motion picture, and all that effort could come undone over two hours in a screening room.
When you've been through this, when you know how it feels to take a barrage of constructive criticism,...

As ill-fated coffee shop burglar Pumpkin in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” Tim Roth knows the truth about a privileged piece of movie mythology.
“We tend to know only as much as [our character] would know, but one thing that I do know because my character would know, which is what’s in the suitcase,” Roth reveals. “But Quentin asked me not to mention it.”
In a film full of mysteries, the contents of that sacred object remain among the biggest. But even without Jules Winnfield’s 9mm pistol pointed at his head, Roth is kind enough to volunteer an answer that, though perhaps slightly disappointing, is at least factually accurate. “I remember him saying that the answer if they ask you was, ‘A battery and a lamp’.”

“SNL sucks now” isn’t as fresh a complaint as you might think. This sentiment was even a matter of public discourse way back in the early ‘90s, as evidenced by the not-so-cleverly titled 1994 Entertainment Weekly article, “Is Saturday Night Dead?”
The magazine wasn’t alone in expressing concern for the long-running comedy series during its 19th season. The New York Daily News noted that SNL would have to try and “find a desperately needed fresh sense of identity” following the loss of Dana Carvey and Chris Rock, and the announced departures of Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney and Rob Schneider.
So EW offered up “20 suggestions” for “how to fix the show.” Looking back at this list, it’s amazing how spot-on some ideas are in retrospect — while others are laughably dated and arguably awful.
For starters, writer Bruce Fretts (who sadly passed away in 2020) suggested handing over the reins of Weekend Update to David Spade,...

“I hate to crap on my own show,” Rob Schneider told Glenn Beck back in 2022. But Saturday Night Live, the show that made him famous, was finished. Kaput. Dead on arrival. In a game of SNL Clue, Schneider said the killer was Kate McKinnon, the weapon was a piano and the location was the main stage at Studio 8H.
“Hillary Clinton lost, which is understandable — she’s not exactly the most likable person in the room,” Schneider said at the time. “And then when Kate McKinnon went out there on Saturday Night Live in the cold opening and all that, and she started dressed as Hillary Clinton and she started playing ‘Hallelujah,’ I literally prayed, ‘Please have a joke at the end.’”
“And there was no joke at the end,” Schneider said. Saturday Night Live was “over. It’s over. It’s not gonna come back.’”

“Saturday Night Live” has already booked Maya Rudolph to return as Vice President Kamala Harris, but who should play her newly named running mate, Midwestern nice guy and governor of Minnesota Tim Walz?
The most apparently obvious candidate — similarly white-haired comedian Steve Martin — has, sadly, already turned down the gig as of Wednesday. But fear not, we’ve got plenty of other suggestions for Lorne Michaels to consider, including A-listers like Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt and John Goodman.

Steve Martin has turned down the chance to play Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live.
The Los Angeles Times reported that SNL boss Lorne Michaels offered him the role, but Martin politely declined.
“I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin told the L.A. Times. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.”
He also spoke about the time commitment such a gig would involve. (Alec Baldwin ended up playing Donald Trump on SNL for several years after first taking on the role before the 2016 election.)
“It’s ongoing,” Martin says. “It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again. Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re gonna find somebody really,...

Dr. Julius Hibbert first appeared on "The Simpsons" in the episode "Bart the Daredevil". In that particular episode, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) was toying with the idea of being an Evel Knieval-type stunt performer, aiming to leap over Springfield Gorge on a skateboard. As a warning, Bart was taken to see Dr. Hibbert who took the boy to a special wing of Springfield hospital. In it were nothing but children who had injured themselves after imitating stunts they saw on TV. "I won't even subject you to the horrors of our Three Stooges ward," Dr. Hibbert gravely intones.
From 1990 through 2021, Dr. Hibbert was played by Harry Shearer. When viewers became sensitive to how many white actors have played animated Black characters throughout the history of animation, Shearer stepped aside and Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role.

Actor Brent Spiner's most visible acting role was probably Data, the android lieutenant commander on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." As Data, Spiner appeared in 176 episodes of "Next Generation," in the four spin-off movies, and in five episodes of "Star Trek: Picard." He also appeared on "Picard" as a new amalgam android character, as well as multiple members of the Soong family throughout various "Star Trek" shows. For an actor who was initially cast as an emotionless being, Spiner certainly played some of the franchise's more dramatic characters.
Spiner has always expressed a little ambivalence toward Data. While he certainly appreciates the money and fame brought to him by the role, Spiner felt that "Star Trek" might have robbed him of the ability to play a wide variety of parts. He feared casting agents would look at him and be unable to look past his "Star Trek" android.

Restarted negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that could mean an end to the actors strike have raised hopes for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Oct. 31-Nov, 5 in Santa Monica. What everyone is hoping for is, in the words of one leading indie producer, that “we can all get back to business.”

Hillary Clinton wasn’t impressed by Julia Sweeney’s 1993 “Saturday Night Live” impression of her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea Clinton.
Sweeney, 63, recalled the sketch while appearing on Wednesday’s episode of fellow “SNL” alums Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast during a conversation about the show’s lack of female representation in the early ’90s. The group discussed how political figures, like Hilary and Sarah Palin, presented the show an opportunity to include women in sketches.
Spade then jogged Sweeney’s memory, recounting that she once played Chelsea, who was 13 years old at the time, stressing that her portrayal “rubbed somebody wrong.”
