The inscrutability of Pat’s androgyny was pushed to comedic extremes, effectively offering prominent, yet thorny representation for gender non-conforming people on television long before the term “nonbinary” was being widely used.

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired North American rights to director Chad Hartigan’s romantic comedy The Threesome, starring Zoey Deutch (Juror #2), Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid), and Ruby Cruz (Bottoms), slating the film for release in theaters on September 5.

Joy Behar’s stage comedy My First Ex-Husband will play its final Off Broadway performance May 18, producers announced today, with a national tour set to begin this summer.

The play, which features a rotating cast that has included Behar, Susie Essman, Tovah Feldshuh, Adrienne C. Moore, Susan Lucci and others, opened in January at the new Mmac Theater on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Behar recently announced that she will return to the comedy for three upcoming performances including an April 30 matinee that will costar her View fellow panelist Whoopi Goldberg.

The current cast, performing through April 20, features Veanne Cox, Jackie Hoffman, Carolyn McCormick, and Andrea Navedo. Beginning April 23, the final New York cast will be Marilu Henner, Marsha Mason, Julia Sweeney and Fat Ham‘s Benja K. Thomas.

Casting, dates and venues have not been announced for the national tour.

The 2025 Tribeca Festival has revealed its feature-film lineup for this year’s event.

The View costars Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar will soon share a stage of an entirely different sort: Goldberg will appear for one performance only with Behar in the latter’s Off Broadway comedic play My First Ex-Husband.

Behar announced the team-up on her Instagram account, captioning a photo of the two, “The reunion we’ve been waiting for!”

The matinee performance is set for Wednesday, April 30, at 2 p.m./Et. The play, which features a rotating cast of actresses as directed by Randal Myler, is staged at the newly renovated Mmac Theater on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

“The Threesome” is quick to establish its rom-com bona fides by opening at a wedding, but like much in Chad Hartigan’s sixth feature, there’s a little something more going on when it sets the stage for a marriage of sensibilities behind the scenes. The director, who is capable of both contemplative dramas (“This Is Martin Bonner”) and raucous comedies (“Morris From America”), tries to strike a balance between screenwriter Ethan Ogilby’s cringe-humor premise of an impromptu ménage à trois and the more serious relationship dynamics it suggests. As a former cast member of Saturday Night Live, Julia Sweeney is known in part for playing "Pat," an androgynous character whose gender was often joked about in recurring sketches. Typically, the humor revolved around other characters speculating on Pat's gender.

At the time, the Pat character was popular enough to get a tie-in feature film greenlit with Sweeney starring in the role. In more recent years, the character (along with the It's Pat film) have come under fire for poking fun at gender identity. While on The View (per Variety), Sweeney reflected on the role, noting that "there was some criticism" leveled against Pat. While she understands where the criticism is coming from, Sweeney also defended Pat, clarifying that the character does not identify as non-binary or transgender — and may not even be a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

Julia Sweeney appeared on “The View” ahead of the “SNL” 50th Anniversary special and admitted that she “took it to heart” and “thought about it a lot” when her sketch comedy character Pat was met with controversy from the LGBTQ community. Pat was a recurring character on “SNL” in the early 1990s and headlined the 1994 feature film, “It’s Pat.” The character is an androgynous misfit, with intended humor deriving from those around Pat not being able to figure out Pat’s gender.

“Transparent” creator Joey Soloway made headlines in 2017 for slamming Pat as an “awful piece of anti-trans propaganda.” Soloway said the sketch was a “hateful, hateful, awful thing to do to non-binary people — to create this character that the whole world laughed at openly.”

While Sweeney acknowledged on “The View” that “there was some criticism” of Pat, she reminded viewers that “Pat isn’t trans or non binary.

Appearing today on ABC’s The View, Sweeney addressed the criticism, saying she “took it to heart” and has “thought about it a lot.”

“Much later, there was some criticism of it,” she said, “but Pat isn’t trans or non binary. Pat is a man or a woman, but you just don’t know which Pat is. That is the joke, but I did understand the criticism, and I took it to heart and thought about it a lot.”

“But even when we were writing all the sketches ,” she continued, “we were really making fun of the other people [in the sketches] not being able to handle the fact that they couldn’t tell.

Sitcoms tend to be short-lived affairs. Most last no more than two seasons, and only the best manage to thrive. It’s a cutthroat niche, and shows generally need some sort of gimmick to survive. “Nonexistent problem, ineffective solution.”

This was the sage advice legendary writer Jim Downey would give to young writers like David Mandel when they were working on commercial parodies for Saturday Night Live. “That was often the key to a great commercial parody,” says Mandel, who wrote on the show from 1992 to 1995. “I loved making the commercial parodies. The chance to go off and make a little film was the opposite of SNL. You could edit it and be precise with it. It was exciting.”

"Saturday Night Live" has been going on for 50 seasons now, so they've had their fair share of bad hosts. Sometimes the host is simply not that comfortable with live acting -- looking at you, January Jones or Jacob Elordi -- and sometimes the host has the bad luck of getting a cold at the worst possible moment, like what seemingly happened to poor Jean Smart in the season 50 premiere. Other times the host is bad because, well, they're just kind of a bad person.

Case in point: Steven Seagal, who hosted in April 1991 and helped deliver an episode so terrible that it got him banned from the show forever. Over three decades later, most "SNL" fans are happy to just pretend the episode never happened, because ite was a trainwreck in a way that wasn't even that fun or interesting.

“SNL sucks now” isn’t as fresh a complaint as you might think. This sentiment was even a matter of public discourse way back in the early ‘90s, as evidenced by the not-so-cleverly titled 1994 Entertainment Weekly article, “Is Saturday Night Dead?”

The magazine wasn’t alone in expressing concern for the long-running comedy series during its 19th season. The New York Daily News noted that SNL would have to try and “find a desperately needed fresh sense of identity” following the loss of Dana Carvey and Chris Rock, and the announced departures of Phil Hartman, Julia Sweeney and Rob Schneider.

So EW offered up “20 suggestions” for “how to fix the show.” Looking back at this list, it’s amazing how spot-on some ideas are in retrospect — while others are laughably dated and arguably awful.

Steve Martin has turned down the chance to play Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate Tim Walz on Saturday Night Live.

The Los Angeles Times reported that SNL boss Lorne Michaels offered him the role, but Martin politely declined.

“I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no,” Martin told the L.A. Times. “I said, ‘Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy.’ I was picked because I have gray hair and glasses.”

The Pulp Fiction cast has reunited to celebrate Quentin Tarantino's film’s 30th anniversary. Released in 1994, Pulp Fiction was Tarantino's second feature film, and it starred John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, and Amanda Plummer.

The main cast reunited at TCM Classic Film Festival, whose team was Most Wanted: Crime and Justice in Film. Other films celebrated this year included 1974's Chinatown, 1971's Dirty Harry, 1975's Dog Day Afternoon, 1967's In Cold Blood, 1959's North by Northwest, and 1954's On the Waterfront. John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, and Harvey Keitel were all in attendance to celebrate the event.

John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and Harvey Keitel reunited at the TCM Classic Film festival on Thursday for a 30th anniversary screening of Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” to reflect on the film’s impact on their careers — and upon the medium itself.

“It changed cinema, so it’s almost hard to have it sink in,” observed Uma Thurman, who joined Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta and Harvey Keitel for a Q&a about Tarantino’s benchmark film with Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. “I feel like I’ve had an evolving and beautifully growing relationship with ‘Pulp Fiction’ all of my life. It changed cinema, and it changed every filmmaker I met since.”

Pulp Fiction stars John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Harvey Keitel reunited Thursday to celebrate the movie’s 30th Anniversary as part of this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival.

The theme of this year’s festival, which runs through April 21, Is Most Wanted: Crime and Justice in Film. Besides Pulp Fiction, other movies that are included this year are Chinatown, Dirty Harry, Dog Day Afternoon, In Cold Blood, North by Northwest, and On the Waterfront.

As is tradition with the festival, all screenings include special introductions to provide context about the films. Thursday’s screening of Pulp Fiction at the Tcl Chinese Theater included a conversation with Travolta, Thurman, Jackson and Keitel. Other film stars in attendance included Rosanna Arquette, Phil Lamarr, Burr Steers, Eric Stoltz, Julia Sweeney, and Frank Whaley.

Pulp Fiction was released in 1994 and directed by Quentin Tarantino. He and Roger Avary won an Oscar for writing the screenplay.

Opening night of the TCM Classic Film Festival next week will also serve as a Pulp Fiction reunion.

Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Rosanna Arquette and Harvey Keitel are among those joining John Travolta on April 18 for the 30th anniversary, 35mm screening of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) at the Tcl Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

Fellow actors Eric Stoltz, Julia Sweeney, Frank Whaley, Phil Lamarr and Burr Steers, producer Lawrence Bender and executive producers Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher are expected to be there as well.

As previously announced, actor Billy Dee Williams and makeup artist Lois Burwell will be honored at the 15th annual festival; author Jeanine Basinger will receive the Robert Osborne Award; and Jodie Foster will partake in a hand- and footprint ceremony.

The festival, with the theme “Most Wanted: Crime and Justice in Film,” runs through April 21 at venues including the rejuvenated Egyptian Theatre.

In that particular episode, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) was toying with the idea of being an Evel Knieval-type stunt performer, aiming to leap over Springfield Gorge on a skateboard. As a warning, Bart was taken to see Dr. Hibbert who took the boy to a special wing of Springfield hospital. In it were nothing but children who had injured themselves after imitating stunts they saw on TV. "I won't even subject you to the horrors of our Three Stooges ward," Dr. Hibbert gravely intones. 

From 1990 through 2021, Dr. Hibbert was played by Harry Shearer. When viewers became sensitive to how many white actors have played animated Black characters throughout the history of animation, Shearer stepped aside and Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role.

While he certainly appreciates the money and fame brought to him by the role, Spiner felt that "Star Trek" might have robbed him of the ability to play a wide variety of parts. Hanway Films is handling the film and will take it to the upcoming American Film Market. The film is directed by Leena Yadav, whose debut feature film, Parched, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2015. Her 2018 feature Rajma Chawal, which screened at London, was snapped up by Netflix.

Cowgirl’s Last Ride is the latest production from Susan Cartsonis and Suzanne Farwell, the producers behind films such as What Women Want and The Holiday. Hillary Clinton wasn’t impressed by Julia Sweeney’s 1993 “Saturday Night Live” impression of her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea Clinton.

Sweeney, 63, recalled the sketch while appearing on Wednesday’s episode of fellow “SNL” alums Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” podcast during a conversation about the show’s lack of female representation in the early ’90s.
