Walter Winchell was Michael's best man at his 1945 marriage to Marjorie Holliday. The couple's son Michael, Jr. was born in 1951.

According to Laura Wagner in an article on Michael in the Winter 2013/2014 issue of Films of the Golden Age, Michael played football at Beloit College but injuries put an end to his athletic pursuits. He was later rejected from military service due to those injuries.
