'Super Hexagon,' 'Hotline Miami,' 'Ftl' Among Independent Games Festival Finalists
Want to know what games the Independent Games Festival picked as their nominees in their top categories this year?

Hit the jump to see what categories "Hundreds," "Hotline Miami," and more got nominated for.

I haven't been able to pick out a particular pattern among this year's Igf nominees in terms of genre or game type--it's a pretty open and diverse field. I will say many of the entries here make me consider heading over to Steam, iTunes, and other handy download services today to catch up on a bunch of under-the-radar titles from 2012 that I missed.

Here's the final list of nominees:

Excellence In Visual Art

Incredipede (Northway Games and Thomas Shahan)

Kentucky Route Zero (Cardboard Computer)

Guacalamelee! (Drinkbox Studios)

Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (Asteroid Base)

Year Walk (Simogo)

Honorable mentions: Fly'n (Ankama Play); Eleven (Christoffer Hedborg, Datahowler); The Bridge (Ty Taylor and Mario Castaneda); Thomas Was Alone (Mike Bithell,...

Da-da-da-Dire: The Ten Most Annoying TV Themetunes
When I went, aged 7 or 8, to audition for Music College, I was asked to sing “the first song that came into my head”. That song was the A Team theme music, by Mike Post. My older brother, in his audition, apparently sung the same thing. My mother chastised us afterwards, but clearly our renditions of this truly inspiring piece of music were acceptable, as we were both accepted.

There are some themetunes that beckon us to the television, signalling our favourite show is about to start. There are some that we find ourselves humming merrily as we go about our day. And then there are those we shudder through, mute, or fast forward. Here are ten of the most annoying – I’m sure you have your own particular list of those which grate your nerves and become unwanted earworms.

10. Walker Texas Ranger “Eyes of the Ranger”

I know it’s...

Henry's Crime
Starring Vera Farmiga, Keanu Reeves, and Judy Greer. Directed by Malcolm Venville.

By Eric Isaac - April 11, 2011

In limited release this week is “Henry’s Crime,” a bank heist comedy starring James Caan, Vera Farmiga and Keanu Reeves. Provoked by his cellmate’s (Caan) dream lecture, Henry Smith, a lackluster hero who has just served three years for a robbery he didn’t commit, discovers his dream: he's going to commit the very bank robbery for which he was wrongly convicted three years ago. With the help of his former cellmate, he devises a plan to break into the bank via the theater across the street, but in order to do that he must join the theatre’s cast in their production of Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard”--whose narrative that seems to parallel Henry’s own.

Reeves is playing the character he was born to play: a pathetic but...

Russell Brand at an event for Arturo, El Millonario Seductor (2011)
Brand Infuriated Dangerous Inmate By Boasting
Russell Brand at an event for Arturo, El Millonario Seductor (2011)
Funnyman Russell Brand was left fearing for his life after boasting about his bank balance to a convicted murderer while filming a documentary in an American prison.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star summoned the courage to visit Angola Jail in Louisiana as part of the upcoming documentary Happiness.

But the Brit admits his sense of humour didn't go down well with inmate Henry Smith, who spends more than 23 hours a day locked up, after he bragged about his charmed life.

He says, "It was terrifying. The average sentence in there was 80 years for murder. This guy is dangerous, suicidal and once escaped.

"I was in his cell and I started winding him up that I'm in movies and rich. I said, 'This is a bit depressing. You have no possessions. This bed is really hard. I stay in hotels. I'm famous and rich, you see.'

"It was a stupid thing to do. I got out of there as quick as I could.

"Here's a social tip - don't boast!"...

The James Clayton Column: Ralph Fiennes vs. the Large Hadron Collider
After watching him in Clash Of The Titans and Cemetery Junction, James has a few things to say about Mr Ralph Fiennes...

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Some people reckon that the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva is going to suck all life from the face of planet Earth. These people are wrong. All life is going to be sucked from the face of the Earth by Ralph Fiennes.

Switzerland is completely safe and you can trust the scientists to carry on the particle collisions without fear of everything collapsing into a black hole. The cinema, on the other hand, may actually be a portal to utter oblivion. Look into Fiennes' grey eyes and quiver, for behind them dwells the secret source of universal antimatter.

Consider the evidence (though tinfoil hat conspiracy theorists itching for an apocalypse never cared much for evidence): you put Fiennes in a film and...

When Design Is Too Good: Stunning Border Signage Is Deemed a Threat
The new U.S.-Canada border crossing station at Massena, NY, as seen from the Canadian side.Photo by Michael Moran.

The graphic designer Michael Bierut, a partner working in the New York office of the firm Pentagram, designed a 21-foot sign for the new U.S.-Canada border crossing at Massena, New York. The sign, as well as the building, which was designed by architects Smith-Miller & Hawkinson, has received substantial praise as a bold and daring piece of federal design. Too daring, perhaps. The sign is being dismantled by the Customs and Border Protection Agency for fear that it will be a target for terrorists. I asked Bierut about how the sign came to be and why it's coming down.

El: I was excited to see a piece of graphic design on the front page of the New York Times Arts section recently, but then I was disappointed to...
