Her father, a tapestry store owner, died in a 1943 accident along with three of her siblings..

During a rehearsal for Boccaccio, she was spotted by West German operetta tenor Heinz Schauland. She married him four years later in a civil ceremony in Hamburg.

Trained as a dancer in the late 1940s. In the succeeding decades, she performed in ballet, cabaret and in night clubs. In 1958 in Dortmund, she met a music producer who signed her to an apprenticeship with Polydor record company, at a salary of DM 1,200 per month.
