Hollywood Flashback: Dropped Slime Boosted Ratings for ‘You Can’t Do That on Television’
Image
The team behind the low-budget Canadian kids’ sketch show You Can’t Do That on Television didn’t know it would help define the Nickelodeon brand when it premiered 45 years ago.

British TV producer Roger Price had created several children’s programs in the U.K. before moving to Canada, where he aimed to launch a show that respected kids’ perspectives and didn’t condescend to them. Price wasn’t one to glamorize childhood, having endured a tough upbringing that included boarding school in Switzerland.

Inspired by adult-focused programs like Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In, Ycdtot featured mostly amateur child actors playing kids who were putting on their own TV show while dealing with incompetent adults. Premiering on Cjoh-tv in Ottawa on Feb. 3, 1979, it earned the stateside attention of fledgling network Nickelodeon, which began airing episodes in early 1982 to big ratings.

“With 30-second sketches, there’s no room for filler,” recalls Abby Hagyard,...

Idw’s announcement included details on writers and executive producers currently attached to the projects.

Korgi – Aury Wallington (Spirit Untamed) joins as showrunner for the television series based on writer-artist Christian Slade’s beloved dog opus that follows the stories of a Korgi pup in epic fairy tales of adventure. A fantasy world filled with creatures both adorable and abominable, Korgi...

‘Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse’ Review
Image
Stars: Adam Alderson, Meghan Barylak, Lindsay Dunphy, Rycen Earley, Elizabeth Flood, Zachary Palmisano, Adam Reid | Written by Jason Utes | Directed by Seth Breedlove

The latest documentary from Seth Breedlove and his Small Town Monsters production company, Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse is a look at one of America’s lesser-known bits of folklore. Sure plenty of people have heard of it but unlike Bigfoot or even Mothman, few people seem to know anything about it. In fact, this is the first non-fiction film on the subject I can think of.

Directed by Breedlove and written by Jason Utes (Momo: The Missouri Monster), Bloodlines: The Jersey Devil Curse begins with several folklore experts giving a brief rundown on the creature. My favourite part of this is Dr. Brian Regal describing it as looking like “Pegasus at the end of a very bad meth addiction.”.

This gives way to a dramatization of...

Saloon Media, Bullrush Pictures Team on Workplace Comedy ‘Hospital Show’ (Exclusive)
Image
Saloon Media, a Blue Ant Media company, and Bullrush Pictures, are collaborating on half-hour workplace comedy “Hospital Show.” The series is an adaptation of the popular YouTube series of the same name, created by actor, writer and director Adam Greydon Reid, the founder of Bullrush Pictures.

“Hospital Show” is about the actors who play television’s most respected doctors on the fictional hit primetime medical drama “Critical Condition.” These actors may dispense miracle cures on television, but beneath the gleaming smiles and spotless white coats is a raging fire of high school politics, power trips and puerile shenanigans.

The web series won awards at Stareable Fest Australia’s Afin, the Florence Film Awards, the Canadian Cinematography Awards and the Leo Awards. The short form series has now been picked up by the Roku Channel where it’s streaming in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.

The TV adaptation...

Netflix dabbles in its first animation and brings Channing Tatum along for the role of Potus. in America: The Motion Picture

After successfully dabbling in feature length films, Netflix has stumped up the cash to venture into their first feature length animation, America: The Motion picture and have secured Channing Tatum to voice the character of the first President of the United States, George Washington.

It’s not only a first for Netflix. The Expendables and Zombieland 2 screenwriter, Dave Callaham, has penned the feature, his first animation too. Matt Thompson takes the helm in the director’s chair, Thompson also teams up with his Floyd County and animated series Archer, partner Adam Reid with Callaham to act as producers on the film with Tatum with his Free Association partners Peter Kiernan and Reid Carolin, and The Lego Movie and Tatum’s Jump Street directors Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Will Allegra at Lord Miller.

Danny Trejo and Steve Austin Smack Each Other Around in Recoil
Steve Austin is quickly becoming this generation’s Steven Seagal. All of his movies are interchangeable, and if they didn’t have different titles, you’d probably think it was one continuous storyline spliced together by someone who doesn’t really understand how movies operate. Be that as it may, I’ve watched all of Austin’s flicks, including that hideous feel-good family drama “Knockout”. Maybe that’s why my cinematic radar twitched a bit when I saw the trailer for the upcoming direct-to-video actioner “Recoil”, which co-stars Danny Trejo, another actor who isn’t too discriminating when it comes to scripts. That’s no criticism, mind you, as I find Trejo to be endlessly entertaining, even when the movie he stars in is less than spectacular. Here’s a quick, one sentence synopsis: A cop turns vigilante after his family is murdered, exacting vengeance on the killers – and then...

Viff has movies. Lots of movies. We've got the line-up (so far)
The Vancouver International Film Festival is my baby. In its 29th year, this is the event I look forward to every year. The lists I've kept through the year come out and I eagerly look through the list of titles in search of those little gems and every year Viff responds with a huge assortment of titles. This year's festival is no different.

Some of the titles we're most eagerly anticipating include Tsumetai Nettaigyo’s Cold Fish (trailer), Gareth Edwards’ Monsters (trailer, review), Jo Sung-Hee’s apocalyptic road movie End of Animal, Carl Bessai’s Repeaters (trailer) and Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats (trailer, review).

There's loads more so be sure to check the titles (so far) after the break. Many more to be announced in the coming days.
