El soñador americano (2022)
New On Digital: American Dreamer, Starring Dinklage And MacLaine
El soñador americano (2022)
Plaion Pictures has announced that American Dreamer, a new dark comedy starring Peter Dinklage as a new homeowner who gets more than he bargained for, is now available on digital. Dinklage plays Dr. Phil Loder, a low-level economics professor who has always wanted to own a home yet has never been able to afford it. That changes when he runs into a childless old widow, played by Shirley MacLaine, who is willing to sell him her entire mansion for practically nothing. It’s amazing! It’s a dream come true! Wait…is there any catch to this? Almost assuredly, but that’s something Phil will have to find out for himself. It feels like it’s been a While since I’ve seen MacLaine show up in anything. Thirty years ago she was so culturally relevant that parodies of her were always appearing in the cartoons I watched, with her...

Shirley MacLaine at an event for Soñadoras (2006)
American Dreamer review – Peter Dinklage is charmer in oddball tale of eccentric inheritance
Shirley MacLaine at an event for Soñadoras (2006)
Hardluck lecturer Dinklage stands to receive a mansion from rich widow Shirley MacLaine in underpowered comedy

This low-key oddity has the potential for some proper horsepower given the odd but intriguing casting of Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine, but it never manages to build up much comic or dramatic speed – much like Dinklage’s electric scooter, his main mode of transport throughout. The film feels ill-considered somehow, like one of the half-sketched fantasies that Dinklage’s protagonist, a university lecturer named Phil, often indulges in, such as imagining a pair of identical twins (Rebecca Olson) are his sister wives ready to minister to his every need. There’s a reason why it’s best not to know other people’s dreams.

Phil’s other big desire is to own a proper home instead of the shabby condo he rents near the lesser-level Massachusetts college where he teaches cultural economics. One...

‘American Dreamer’ Review: Peter Dinklage And Shirley MacLaine At Their Best In This Very Black Human Comedy
Image
American Dreamer deserves better than it has gotten. Shot three years ago during the pandemic this delirously black comedy premiered at Tribeca 2022 and got lost in the crowd. The filmmakers including first time feature director Paul Dektor and screenwriter/producer Theodore Melfi decided to then hold it back and recut and tighten it eliminating 10 minutes of the original running time. In early 2023 it turned up at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, still largely ignored, and then its distribution hunt was further delayed by the Hollywood strikes. Finally Vertical has wisely picked it up and it will be opening in theatres and VOD Friday.

I saw the Tribeca cut and I have seen the final cut. Both worked for me but it was great to experience it a second time in an actual theatre with a very appreciative audience. Comedies work best that way and this one...

‘American Dreamer’ Review: Uneven Inheritance Comedy Squanders Shirley MacLaine-Peter Dinklage Pairing
Image
The dubious ideology known as the “American dream” might have lost its meaning amid today’s economic conditions, when making rent each month counts as a triumph for most. But in debuting director Paul Dektor’s occasionally amusing yet messy dark comedy, “American Dreamer,” untenured East Coast economics professor Dr. Phil Loder (Peter Dinklage) holds onto its antiquated gist for dear life, indignantly teaching his subject with an idealist pursuit-of-happiness angle and fantasizing about the day he would proudly buy his very own house.

The trouble is, Dr. Phil (a nickname he detests) doesn’t quite have the means for the property of his dreams — not a modestly comfortable condo or anything, but a giant mansion that would set him back a few million dollars. Still, that doesn’t stop him from frequenting open houses at the kinds of homes he definitely can’t afford and sipping champagne among more qualified buyers.

You can watch the clip above and check out the official synopsis below:

When an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes his way, Phil strikes a deal with Astrid Finnelli (MacLaine), a lonely, childless, near-death widow who offers her sprawling estate for pennies. Peter Dinklage Tries to Buy a Home in Satire 'American Dreamer' Trailer
Image
"Do you wish death upon her?" "Not tomorrow..." Vertical has revealed the official trailer for an indie film titled American Dreamer, now set for release in March this year. This film originally premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival a few years ago, and has been stuck in release limbo ever since. Which is not a good sign. "What do we need to be happy? What do we want? And ultimately - how far are we willing to go, to get it?" Economics professor Phillip Loder poses these questions to his grad students as he ponders these thoughts. Phil is a twice-divorced, frustrated, underpaid professor, as well as an aspiring novelist, clamoring for bigger, better things in his life. He finds a hard-to-believe good deal on a masnion estate and jumps at the offer, hoping he'll strike it rich – only to quickly realize it really is too good to be true.

Skydance, Ted Melfi Team For Screen Adaptation Of John Flanagan’s ‘Ranger’s Apprentice’ YA Novels

Exclusive: Skydance has taken on the challenge of turning the bestselling YA fantasy novel series Ranger’s Apprentice into a live action film, with the hope it can become a franchise. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger will produce alongside Melfi and Quinn. Flanagan will be executive producer, and Matt Grimm will oversee for Skydance.

‘American Dreamer’ Review: Peter Dinklage and Shirley MacLaine Make an Appealing Odd Couple
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Few actors are as effective conveying misanthropy as Peter Dinklage. With his arch line readings and endlessly expressive face, the actor excels at portraying damaged souls possessing an underlying vulnerability. It’s what makes him so perfect for the starring role in the new film scripted by Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures) in which he plays an embittered economic professor desperately searching for happiness but failing miserably at every turn. American Dreamer, recently showcased as the opening night film of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, is the sort of acerbic black comedy that feels like a throwback to the more cinematically daring 1970s era.

Dinklage plays Philip Loder, an economics professor at a New England university whose lectures mainly consist of angry screeds about social inequality. Philip relates to the subject personally, since he only earns 50,000 a year and doesn’t have the...

‘American Dreamer’ Film Review: Peter Dinklage Real-Estate Comedy Requires Major Repairs
Peter Dinklage
At times, “American Dreamer” brings to mind “American Beauty,” even if we’re three recessions removed from an economy conducive to partying like it’s 1999.

Real estate and homeownership remain intrinsically tied to the American dream and, per the movies, so do improper relationships with much-younger women. Dr. Phil Loder (Peter Dinklage), an adjunct professor in cultural economics who makes 50K a year, doesn’t have the wherewithal to luxuriate in funemployment like the protagonist in “Beauty,” but that doesn’t make him any less noxious.

Phil consumes sandwiches dispensed by a break-room vending machine, yet he can’t satiate his obsession with million-dollar listings merely with reality TV on Bravo. He gatecrashes open houses for properties he can’t afford and is not above causing a scene. Realtor Dell (Matt Dillon) patiently humors him and still gets called names. Though Dell is an archetypical greedy bloodsucker (right out of...

Netflix has won the global rights in an auction to “The Starling,” a dramedy directed by Ted Melfi that stars Melissa McCarthy, Kevin Kline, Timothy Olyphant, Chris O’Dowd and Daveed Diggs, the streamer announced Monday.

“The Starling” is described as a heartwarming and comic story about a woman who suffers through a hardship and then becomes obsessed with trying to kill a small starling bird nested in her backyard that harasses and attacks her, something that now represents all her problems. In the process, she forms an unlikely friendship with a quirky psychologist turned veterinarian with his own troubled past.

Melfi is directing the film from a script by Matt Harris, and he’ll also produce alongside Kimberly Quinn and Limelight’s Dylan Sellers and Chris Parker. “The Starling” comes from Limelight, Entertainment One (eOne) and Boies Schiller Entertainment. Netflix Pays Near $20M To Win Auction For ‘The Starling’, Ted Melfi-Directed Melissa McCarthy-Starrer
Melissa McCarthy
Exclusive: On the basis of a script and four-minute promo reel, Netflix has won an auction and acquired world rights to The Starling, the Ted Melfi-directed drama that stars Melissa McCarthy, Kevin Kline, Chris O’Dowd and Timothy Olyphant. Sources said the deal is in the $20 million range and while that might not be the most ever paid for a film based on script and sizzle reel, The Starling has wet its beak in an exceptional manner, especially in a market like this one. It might portend a run on finished films that haven’t yet locked distributors.

In the Matt Harris-scripted drama, McCarthy and O’Dowd play a married couple trying to rebuild their relationship after suffering a tragedy. While her husband heads off to deal with his grief in recovery, Lily Maynard tries to heal in the real world, one that becomes surreal when she grows a beautiful garden in their backyard,...

Melissa McCarthy, Chris O’Dowd In Talks To Re-Team With ‘St. Vincent’ Helmer Ted Melfi In ‘The Starling’
Melissa McCarthy
Exclusive: Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd are in talks to star for their St. Vincent director Ted Melfi in The Starling, a Black List scripted comedy by Matt Harris.

The tone, comedy grounded with emotion, is comparable to St. Vincent. A married couple suffers a tragedy that strains their relationship. While her husband heads off to deal with grief in recovery, Lily Maynard stays home. He has built a beautiful garden for her in the backyard, but she finds herself assailed by a sizable black starling that has built a nearby nest. She seeks out a veterinarian to see if there is a humane way to get rid of this bird. That vet, who was a psychiatrist once but shed humans for animals, puts his own imprint on the situation. The film is an allegorical tale of how love can carry one through grief.

Bill Bellamy (Def Comedy Jam) is set as a series regular in Nana, a multi-cam/hybrid ABC pilot starring and co-executive produced by Sons of Anarchy alum Katey Sagal. Hidden Figures tells the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson-brilliant African-American women working at Nasa, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. ‘St. Vincent’ Review
Stars: Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy, Naomi Watts, Chris O’Dowd, Terrence Howard, Jaeden Lieberher, Kimberly Quinn, Lenny Venito, Nate Corddry | Written and Directed by Theodore Melfi

Do not be shocked if St. Vincent seems familiar; a grumpy old man who can barely take care of himself forced to tend to the needs of a child is a concept well many have drawn from. By taking a proven premise first time director Theodore Melfi is clearing hoping his first time is not also his last time.

Bad Santa, the original Bad News Bears, and even The Mighty Ducks have used this idea with staggering success. Typically the key to making it work is getting right cantankerous man to play the part. Walter Mattau, Billy Bob Thorton, and now Bill Murray can be added to the list of people that have taken this familiar role and made it uniquely their own.

Murray plays Vincent,...

Miles Teller in Whiplash. Música y obsesión (2014)
‘Whiplash,’ ‘St. Vincent,’ 13 More Join Crowded Specialty Box Office: Preview
Miles Teller in Whiplash. Música y obsesión (2014)
Intense music drama Whiplash, already a big winner at Sundance and the Deauville American Film Festival earlier this year, should drum up plenty of audience interest in its debut this weekend, even though it faces a crowded specialty market that also features several other notable newcomers, including the Bill Murray comedy St. Vincent, Hilary Swank‘s You’re Not You and Jeremy Renner‘s Kill the Messenger. All are what I’d call “big” specialty releases, with big names attached that should attract big attention.

The weekend also includes what I’d call some “small” releases, including documentaries The Overnighters (another Sundance winner) and I Am Ali, about the former heavyweight boxing champion, alongside the Mormon Church-backed Meet the Mormons. All will be clawing for attention in a market that’s seen more than 30 films debut in the past three weeks.

That said, Whiplash should be a real career turner...

Toronto: How Ted Melfi Got His Bill Murray Prayers Answered On ‘St. Vincent’
Bill Murray at an event for Flores rotas (2005)
As his directorial debut St. Vincent is unveiled tonight in a gala Weinstein Company premiere at Toronto, and with a Sony adaptation of J.R. Moeringer’s The Tender Bar and a New Line remake of Going In Style percolating, Ted Melfi is hot stuff. But this weekend is all about Bill Murray, and it seems worth remembering how much that actor, with an assist from Jack Nicholson, is responsible for helping Melfi rise from that deep pool of writers who believe they’ve got the next big script, if only they could get somebody to pay attention. I wrote Melfi’s story when TWC agreed to finance his $13 million film, but it most certainly is going to get repeated after tonight. So here it is, again.

Murray made St. Vincent happen, when he agreed to play a cantankerous train wreck of a neighbor who takes under his corrupt wing...
