Won two Tony Awards as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical): in 1951 for "Call Me Madam" and in 1959 for "Goldilocks."

Has one son Russell and two grandchildren.

In 1962, he was signed to star in a TV series about a Maine minister called "Boone Bay Harbor". Although at least one script and 26 plot outlines for the proposed series were written, the proposed pilot for the series was never filmed.

In 1959, Russell Nype and Leonard Stone tied for the Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Musical. Russell won for "Goldilocks" and Leonard won for "Redhead." Theirs was the second of 10 ties to occur at the Tonys.
