After retiring from acting Irene became a preschool teacher. She now runs Mencius Mandarin Preschool in Greenwich, CT.

She has appeared in one film that has been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: El Club de la Buena Estrella (1993).
