On the set of Carry on Screaming! (1966), he complained to the producer Peter Rogers about the conditions on the set. He was not used in another Carry On film as a result for 12 years, when he returned in Emmanuelle ataca Londres (1978).

Trained in medicine at Sheffield University. At 18 he walked from Sheffield to London to become an actor. He spent over six years in active service in the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War II including a spell attached to the Desert Rats.

Actor credited with nearly 200 film appearances, 500 radio broadcasts and an estimated 2,000 television appearances.

Father of actor Christopher Mitchell.

Was considered for the role of Colonel Von Strohm in 'Allo 'Allo! (1982) before Richard Marner was cast in the role.
