As Lagaan Celebrates 24 Years, Subhash K Jha’s Interview With Aamir Khan After The Film Wrapped
Image
To celebrate Lagaan, which released 24 years ago today, we present Subhash K Jha’s far-reaching interview with Aamir Khan from 2001 right after the film had wrapped, about working on the epic Lagaan as actor and producer.

Aamir Khan has always been an adventurer.

It therefore comes as no surprise to anyone that he completed the shooting of his first home production Lagaan in record time. Curiosity about Lagaan in the film trade was intense. Was Lagaan a period film? Was it a historical? Did Aamir Khan ghost-direct the film on behalf of Ashutosh Gowariker? (Certainly not!) The film’s intense producer-leading-man shed light on his commitment to making a quality product.

While many of your colleagues shy away from film production, you’ve plunged into it fearlessly. What is Jhamu Sughand’s role in the making of Lagaan?

Jhamu Sughand is financing the film. I am the producer. Either the...

Raj Kumar Santoshi Speaks To Subhash K Jha On The Legend Of Bhagat Singh
Image
Director Raj Kumar Santoshi talks with Subhash K Jha on his 2002 drama The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, why he choose Ajay Devgn for the lead role and much more.

Why was the making of The Legend Of Bhagat Singh so important to you?

I’ll be very honest with you. When I was a child of 13 or 14, I remember asking my father (the late filmmaker P.L.Santoshi) about Bhagat Singh. As the evening fell in Lonavala my father told me all the details about Bhagat Singh’s life . That evening’s conversation with my father remained in my mind . While working with Govindji (Nihalani), I picked up this fine habit of reading . Any city I’d go to, I’m sure to pick up books. That’s how I familiarized myself with Bhagat Singh’s life. Then, during the time I made my early films like Andaz Apna Apna,...

Subhash K Jha Revisits Ajay Devgan’s The Legend Of Bhagat Singh
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at the Ajay Devgn starrer, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, with music by Ar Rahman, which released in 2002.

The passionate intensity of the Indian freedom hero Bhagat Singh martyred at the age of 23 — or 24 depending on which of the three versions of the bio-pic one is watching — by embracing death with a smile in March 1931 in pursuit of his dream of an Independent India, shines in every frame of Santoshi’s film.

Bhagat Singh’s mercurial passion for patriotism and the sheer madness of the revolutionary impulse in colours that convey both nostalgia and immediacy. Even as subtle sepia tones seep into the narrative, the rusts and oranges suggest a rugged rage and an incendiary intensity. The sets and locations — including the Taj Mahal in Agra silhouetting the revolutionaries’ zeal deal — are equally apt. Credit must go to cinematographer K V Anand...

Ready, Unsteady Go….14 Years Of Salman-Anees Bazmi’s Ready
Image
Looking back, Subhash K Jha re-examines the 2011 action comedy Ready, starring Salman Khan and directed by Anees Bazmi.

Salman Khan and his director, Anees Bazmi, pay a hefty comic homage to Hum Aapke Hain Koun. The Salman-Asin romance unfolds against the backdrop of a commodious joint family where every family member seems determined to have a good time, even at the expense of good taste.

True, Asin lacks the gamine charm of Madhuri Dixit. But then the Salman Khan in Ready is not quite the Salman Khan from Hum Aapke Hain Koun. He hasn’t aged. He’s just become more smug and self-confident and far less vulnerable.

Many times, we catch him looking bored on camera. But that is this iconic star’s style statement. When you are Salman Khan, you can slip out of a character if you want. No one is complaining; Bazmi’s script,...

This Day That Year: Nandita Das’ Lal Salaam Completes 23 Years
Image
Looking back at Nandita Das’ Lal Salaam, Subhash K Jha focuses on the film that released in 2002 in this new installment of This Day That Year.

The trouble with cinema on caste and economic oppression is, it makes very oppressive viewing. If we go back in time to notable films on the theme of subjugation, both offbeat and mainstream, we seldom encounter pleasant memories about products from this genre of cinema. While a stray Mother India or Ganga Jumna managed to elevate the subject of oppression into high art, the other raw realistic expositions on the theme like Govind Nihalani’s Aakrosh, Shyam Benegal’s Ankur, Prakash Jha’s Damul and Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen were bitter pills to swallow.

First-time director Gangavihari Boratte paints a bleak picture of our abysmally unequal social order in Lal Salaam, which completed 23 years on May 3. Shot on strikingly green and grim locations...

'Lohardaga' is emotional thriller about tribal youth turning false Maoists
Image
The upcoming film ‘Lohardaga’, which stars Vijay Raaz, Sanjay Mishra and Ravi Jhanka, is inspired by a true story from 2012 when more than 500 unemployed tribal youths living in the forests of Jharkhand were falsely declared Maoists on paper and were forced to surrender.

Most of the youths that surrendered simply wanted to serve the Indian Army for a noble cause. By taking money from these youths, it was claimed that by surrendering as Maoists, they would get their desired job.

Talking about the film, actor and narrator Vijay Raaz said: “This is unfortunate to learn that thousands of poor innocent youngsters became Maoists, just to get jobs as promised under the surrender scheme of the government. It is much more disheartening to know that such stories never used to see the light of day in the past. I am glad to have been a part of the film, which touches...

Ya Rab (2014)
'Ya Rab'- Strong message on religious fundamentalism (Ians Movie Review, Rating:***)
Ya Rab (2014)
Film: "Ya Rab"; Cast: Ajaz Khan, Akhilendra Mishra; Director: Hasnain Hyderabadwala; Rating: ***

There is something to be said about a film that speaks out loudly against the religion of intolerance and the culture of violence.

And eye for an eye may be fine for an era gone-by. In today's day and age, just chill, and curb the rage.

That's the message this loud and melodramatic film puts across with a deafening gusto and a blinding sincerity.

While the treatment of the theme of anti-terrorism harks back to the Bollywood potboilers of the 1970s, there is clearly an abundance of passionate integrity in the depiction of the Good Religion and Bad Religion. The characters are seen sighing, bellowing, chortling.

A delegation of this council involving Congress Mla Amin Patel, former legislator Yusuf Abrahni and the general secretary of the council M A Khalid submitted a memorandum demanding a ban of the film to the Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Khalid who has seen the film believes that certain scenes may hurt religious sentiments and might affect the law and order of the country and hence has called for a ban of the film.

However, the director Hasnain Hyderabadwala maintains that his film is in fact against demonization of Islam and opposes terrorism. He also revealed that the crew has sought help from Mahesh Bhatt in order to release it on the said date without any hindrances.
