The Roommate wins weekend box office
The teen TV star-laden psycho thriller The Roommate topped the box office with a (Us)$15 million debut over a slow weekend as the Super Bowl predictably kept many film fans at home, glued to the small screen.

In the film, Minka Kelly plays Sara Matthews, a college freshman who moves into a dorm on campus with new roommate Rebecca ("Gossip Girl" Leighton Meester in her first major film role) and though the two easily become besties, Rebecca's weirdo behaviour starts to get more obsessive and borderline aggressive until Sara fears for her life. In addition to Meester, the cast boasts stars from "90210," "The Vampire Diaries," Hellcats," and "One Tree Hill."...

The Roommate review
Single White Female + Fatal Attraction - all the good bits of those films = The Roommate.

The Roommate is a movie whose story is instantly recognizable to anyone who has ever seen another movie of this genre, the 'perfect (blank) who turns out to be more than meets the eye'. You've literally seen this movie a dozen times if you've ever watched a movie before.

Have you seen Single White Female? Then you've seen a better version of The Roommate. Have you seen Fatal Attraction? Then you've seen a better version of The Roommate. This movie is basically a mash-up of those two films, except without the terror, suspense, horror, gore, violence, intrigue, or sexiness of those two films.

Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly) is your classic small town girl off to the big city. She's the most fashionable girl in Des Moines, Iowa, so, naturally, she knows she's going to take...

‘The Roommate’ Is On The Top Position for Weekend Box Office
As the country pumped up for Superbowl weekend, “The Roommate” had a successful weekend opening with $15.3 million despite being tackled and slammed by critics. The film has Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly) assigned with psychotic killer Rebecca (Leighton Meester) as a roommate. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned a 9 percent critics rating, which is the third lowest of the year—barely above “Frankie and Alice” and “Waiting for Forever.” The other opening film was James Cameron’s “Sanctum,” which swam to the second position with $9.2 million. The thriller is about a group of cave divers seeking an exit after mother nature trapped them inside the earth. For the rest of the top five, “No Strings Attached” earned $8.4 million, a drop of 37.4 percent from the previous weekend to the third position. Oscar nominated “The King’s Speech” is still going very strong in fourth place with $8.3 million, a decrease of 24.9 percent.

[Review] The Roommate
The Roommate is a largely missed opportunity, right down to the design of the actual “room” these “mates” share. As escapist Hollywood entertainment does, everything at the fictional University of Los Angeles is better looking than your college experience. Often freshman dorms have more in common with prison cells and housing projects: brutalist architecture built on the cheap, reflecting a period before colleges became more competitive by building more glamorous accommodations. Imagine a cinder block cave, isolated as two roommates slowly adapt to each others personalities, world-views and meld into something that will haunt your being. This could be great psychological drama. In fact, I’m going to register this treatment with the Writers Guild after I finish this review.

Instead, Danish director Christian E. Christiansen, in his English-language debut, tries too hard to keep a straight face, crafting a thriller that we’ve seen before, although this may be...

New ‘The Roommate’ Movie Delivered Lots Of Thrills & Drama
New 'The Roommate' movie delivered lots of thrills & drama. Screen Gems released their new horror/thriller flick "The Roommate" into theaters this weekend. I checked it out,and thought it was really good. I really liked Gossip Girls star Leighton Meester's performance as the psycho chick. The movie stars: Leighton Meester, Minka Kelly, Cam Gigandet, Aly Michalka, Danneel Harris, Frances Fisher, and Billy Zane. "The Roommate" revolved mostly around characters Rebecca (Leighton Meester) and Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly). Sara is a typical female college student who appears to be having a great time at college. Then one day,she gets a new roommate named Rebecca who appears very friendly at first. Well,at least to Sara, anyways. Everyone else that Sara introduces Rebecca to,gets an evil stare,or a slightly uninterested attitude because it's all about Sara, and only Sara when it comes to Rebecca,and...

The Roommate (2011)
Directed by: Christian E. Christiansen

Written by: Sonny Mallhi

Cast: Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester, Danneel Harris, Alyson Michalka, Cam Gigandet, Matt Lanter, Katerina Graham

People - just stop getting roommates.

If Single White Female taught us anything, is that the innocent seeming person you just moved in with may seem nice, but they actually want to tear your skin off and wear it to the mall. Whatever you do, don't get a small cute pet with said person, because that small cute pet will most assuredly meet a gruesome end. How many more rabbits need to be boiled or puppies brutalized for people to realize the danger of getting small cute animals with psychotic roommates?

The most shocking thing you might learn in The Roommate is that apparently some people actually major in 'Fashion Design' for a four-year degree. Now, most four-year degrees also require tons of supplementary classes in history,...

Movie Review - 'The Roommate'
The Roommate

Starring Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester and Cam Gigandet

Directed by Christian E. Christiansen

Rated PG-13

There is absolutely no reason to see The Roommate.

The directing and acting are nothing special and the plot is disjointed, boring and unoriginal. In fact, unoriginal is putting it mildly - there isn't a single scene that you haven't already seen done better in another film. It's a complete waste of time.

Mostly, the film is a cheap imitation of Single White Female. Like that film, there is an attractive female lead living with a mentally-unbalanced roommate who develops an unhealthy obsession with her. In this film, the protagonist is a college freshman named Sara Matthews (Minka Kelly) living in a dorm with her deranged roommate Rebecca (Leighton Meester).

The film starts off on the wrong foot by throwing too many balls up in the air at once. A variety of different subplots are introduced early on,...

The Roommate
The Roommate

Directed by: Christian E. Christiansen

Cast: Leighton Meester, Minka Kelly, Cam Gigandet

Running Time: 1 hr 33 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: February 4, 2011

Plot: A young woman (Kelly) embarks into the college world and discovers that her roommate (Meester) may not be as sweet as she seems.

Who’S It For? The Roommate might jump scare a collection of easily entertained middle schoolers, but it’s definitely not for anyone that has actually been to college. Especially if you have experience in college housing, this campus-based horror wannabe will truly become campy.

Expectations: Two characteristics about The Roommate made it feel a bit sketchy before the film even started – it wasn’t screened for press, and it’s a PG-13 horror movie. When those two elements are combined, it’s usually a bad sign. Still, I was highly curious as to how the movie would present the idea of creepiness to its PG-13 demographic.

Movie Review: The Roommate a Silly Psycho Slumber Party Packed With TV Hotties
Penn Badgley, Blake Lively, Taylor Momsen, Leighton Meester, Jessica Szohr, Chace Crawford, and Ed Westwick in Gossip Girl: Chica indiscreta (2007)
Review in a Hurry: Spotted. Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester getting her crazy on as the roommate from hell to her new Bff, Friday Night Lights' Minka Kelly. Let the battle of the TV hotties begin! If you can go with this Single White Female 2.0 as the trash that it is, there's fun times to be had. Just be sure to hide any rabbits kittens! The Bigger Picture: Sara Matthews (Kelly) is a freshman at the fictional University of Los Angeles. She's studying fashion and as luck would have it, her new dorm-mate Rebecca (Meester) is a local from Beverly Hills who has a closet full of designer outfits. But when it comes time to share like all roomies do, Rebecca keeps her secret journal close while trying to...

'The Roommate' Review: A Hollow, No-Stakes Thriller Without Thrills
Filed under: Reviews, Horror, Cinematical

'The Roommate' is an auto-tuned horror movie; a mechnically processed imitation of a thriller that is hollow, joyless, lifeless and utterly artificial in origin. This should be of no surprise to anyone who is familiar with Screen Gems' recent line of PG-13 horror movies, 'The Stepfather,' 'Prom Night' and 'When a Stranger Calls.' What is surprising, however, is that all three of those films - which range in quality from passably mediocre to laughably bad - look like inspired masterworks compared to Christian E. Christiansen's unwaveringly vapid attempt to make 'Single White Female' for a new generation.

Minka Kelly stars as college freshman Sara Matthews, a bright eyed beauty from Des Moines who is planning to make it in the big city as a fashion designer. Leighton Meester stars as the titular dorm tenant, Rebecca, a seemingly...
