During the pandemic, an accidental gem was brought to light. Vivica A. Fox, Syleena Johnson, Claudia Jordan, and LisaRaye McCoy hopped onto Zoom and created Cocktails with Queens. The series was a hit with viewers and was soon picked up by Fox Soul for 3 more seasons. Unfortunately, the show was suddenly canceled, leaving both the fans and its stars dismayed. This October, however, a new series, helmed by Vivica and Syleena, takes the concept Cocktails with Queens was built on, and puts it in the hands of a new Black-owned streaming platform.

The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) has announced the lineup for this year’s Talks Series, headlined by 2023 festival ambassador Lena Waithe.

In 1980, the auspiciously named first baseman Willie Mays Aikens made baseball history when he hit two home runs in two World Series games, a feat that wasn’t repeated until 2009. That year, the Kansas City Royals player was second in home runs and RBIs only to teammate, friend and future Hall of Famer, George Brett.

Directed by Marcel Sarmiento, “The Royal” isn’t obsessed with Aikens’ on-the-field triumphs. Instead — with a script by Gregory W. Jordan, based on the 2012 book he co-wrote with Aiken, “Willie Mays Aikens: Safe at Home” — the movie recounts what happened to the major league slugger after he served 14 years for crack cocaine possession and distribution.

In 1994, under the inequitable federal sentencing guidelines, Aikens was sentenced to more than 20 years for possession with intent to sell 50 grams of crack cocaine. (He’d have had to be in possession of five kilos of powdered coke to receive a similar sentence.

Exclusive: Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to For the Love of Money, a crime drama directed by Leslie Small that stars Keri Hilson and Katt Williams. The distributor plans to release the pic via its Freestyle Releasing, in association with Global View Entertainment, in 750 theaters nationwide on November 24, marking the company’s first theatrical release in more than a year owing to the pandemic.

The pic, produced by Melvin Childs Presents, centers on a single mother (Hilson) who, when pushed to her limits out of the need to protect her daughter (Jazzy Jade), returns to a world she’s spent a lifetime running from. LisaRaye McCoy, Rotimi, Jason Mitchell, DC Young Fly and Cedric Pendleton also star, with appearances by musical artists Keith Sweat, Latto and Lyfe Jennings.

BET is closing out the summer with a block of original feature films, including the Taryn Manning lightning rod “Karen.”

Titled “Summer of Chills,” the slate of suspense thrillers includes three BET original movies and the linear debut of two titles from streaming service BET Plus.

The Oprah Winfrey Network is getting ready to say goodbye to the popular and long-running Iyanla: Fix My Life TV series. The show, which began in 2012, features inspirational speaker, author, and life coach Iyanla Vanzant as she helps guests overcome various problems in their lives.

The eighth and final season of Iyanla: Fix My Life will kick off on April 10th on OWN and the show will wrap up with a two-hour special on May 22nd.

The Urban Movie Channel has renewed its original series A House Divided for a second season, with the soapy, multi-generational family drama created by Dan Garcia in production and set to return to the AMC-backed streaming service in the spring.

Single Ladies actress LisaRaye McCoy is speaking out about tensions on the set of the VH1 series with her former co-star, Stacey Dash.
