In the era of nonstop reboots and revivals, there have long been plans to bring back the hit comedy series Married... with Children. An animated revival series has been in the works for several years with all of the original show's lead stars on board to reprise their roles.
However, this particular revival was not meant to be, according to the latest update on the project. Per TVLine, it's been revealed that the project has officially been scrapped, no longer in active development. The good news is that the IP "remains very important to Sony Pictures Television," and classic episodes remain available for streaming on platforms like Hulu and Pluto TV. Perhaps that means the door is still open for something like a one-off revival special, if nothing else, even if that seems unlikely at this point.
If the animated show went forward, it would have brought Christina Applegate back to acting.

Two years ago, the animated revival of the beloved sitcom, Married… With Children, was said to be in development with the original cast attached to return, including Katey Sagal,Ed O’Neill, Christina Applegate, and David Faustino. Later in 2023, Applegate confirmed that the group remained attached to the project, but since then, nothing further has been shared until now. Unfortunately, it appears that the long-running comedy won’t be getting that animated rebootafter all; nevertheless, fans can always hope for another one in the near future.
As reported by TVLine, the animated Married… With Children series is no longer in development, although the IP remains very important to Sony Pictures Television. In the meantime, fans can revisit the Bundys’ “bawdy antics” currently available on Hulu, Pluto TV, Roku, and Cozi TV. The satirical show was created by Michael G. The Fox executives had only one rule when they greenlit the iconic sitcom Married… With Children as one of their first primetime series ever, be as bold as they can. The series, which ran from 1987 to 1997, starred an ensemble cast including Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal in a hilariously dysfunctional family.
And it didn’t take long for the show to become a hit and gain a reputation for its crude humor, sharp social commentary, and willingness to offend, all of which helped the network enter as a bold new player in primetime broadcast.

The iconic Season 4 premiere of Married… With Children continued to sizzle with fans even more than three decades after its original release. Since its 1987 release, Married… With Children has become a pop culture staple for its unapologetic, raunchy humor and subversive take on the concept of the American family.
Created by Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt, the series follows the dysfunctional Bundy family, with Ed O’Neill as the downtrodden shoe salesman Al Bundy and Katey Sagal as his iconic, teasing, and effortlessly sultry wife, Peggy.
And though the series enjoyed an 11-season run, few episodes have stayed in the conversation quite like Hot Off the Grill, where both O’Neill and Sagal’s performance cemented the episode’s status as a fan-favorite.

When it first hit the airwaves, Michael G. Moye and Ron Leavitt's 1987 sitcom "Married... with Children" represented a revolutionary turn of events. The bulk of TV sitcoms throughout the 1980s skewed wholesome, often depicting idealized, loving suburban families dealing with recognizable domestic drama. In most cases, there was a non-threatening air to American TV that reflected the bleak conservatism of the Reagan era. "Married... with Children" deliberately flew in the face of TV's perceived wholesomeness, presenting a family of miserable, ignorant, awful, unhealthy characters who all openly hated one another. The Bundy family only seemed to live together out of spite, refusing to murder each other because they knew staying alive was a better way to inflict misery.
The series was, perhaps bafflingly, a major hit for Fox, lasting 259 episodes over the course of 11 boffo seasons. It eventually took on a dangerous skew, offering more and more brazen titillation...

David W. Duclon, the creator of Punky Brewster who also produced a handful of hit sitcoms, including Silver Spoons, Family Matters, The Jeffersons and Laverne & Shirley, has died. He was 74.
Duclon died Wednesday morning in Franklin, Tennessee, after a long illness, his daughter Danielle Duclon announced.
Born Warren David Duclon on April 27, 1950, in Rockford, Illinois, he first made his way into Hollywood in 1972 as a writer and assistant producer on ABC’s The Odd Couple, starring Tony Randall and Jack Klugman.
As Duclon continued his career in television, he clearly had a knack for sitcoms. Married... with Children was a big success during its run on television, ultimately spanning eleven seasons before wrapping up in 1997. There was no Season 12 as the show was canceled, but the stars of the sitcom were not among the first to know.
Ed O'Neill (Al Bundy) was recently interviewed on former co-star Christina Applegate's (Kelly Bundy) MeSsy podcast, per EW. Applegate noted how the news of Married... with Children getting canceled took some time to get to her, as nobody from Fox called her directly. She was surprised to hear about the show ending from her assistant, and that was after the update had already been passed on by other people up to that point.

Ed O’Neill’s lack of Emmy awards for his role on Modern Family has been a hot topic of debate among fans. One particular scene from the show highlights why this oversight feels like a crime: O’Neill delivers an unforgettable performance that combines feelings, depth, and raw emotion in a way only he can.

That animated revival of Married... with Children is still in the planning stages, but the cast is waiting to hear when they'll get started with recording their voiceover work for the project. That's the latest update on the revival from Christina Applegate, who played Kelly Bundy on the classic sitcom. After years of reboot rumors, it was reported last year that Applegate and the other original cast members would return for an animated Married... with Children revival. Alex Carter (Family Guy) was reportedly on board to write and serve as showrunner for the series, but it wasn't clear which network or streaming service it would land. No major updates have really come forth since.
In a new interview with Vanity Fair, Applegate addresses how she has since stepped away from doing on-screen acting due to her multiple sclerosis diagnosis. The final season of Dead to Me will serve as her last live-action performance.

Exclusive: Another classic 1990s comedy is making a comeback. An animated revival of Married… with Children headlined by the original series’ stars Katey Sagal, Ed O’Neill, Christina Applegate and David Faustino is being pitched to networks and streamers and is getting strong interest, sources tell Deadline.
The new take on the 1987 Fox sitcom is written by Family Guy executive producer Alex Carter, who serves as showrunner. Sony Pictures Television, which owns and distributes the original series, has been working on the animated project for over a year and closed deals with the quartet of Married… with Children stars before taking it out.
While it is unclear yet where the animated Married… with Children would land, Fox, Hulu and Peacock are considered logical destinations.

On April 5, 1987, there was something different about Los Angeles. The Hollywood sign, perhaps L.A.’s most identifiable landmark, had seemingly been erased off the hillside it’s resided upon for decades. In its place was a three-letter word that was easy to read from the city below as spotlights had been installed for maximum visibility: Fox.
Meanwhile, another longstanding staple of the entertainment industry was undergoing a change as well. CBS, ABC, and NBC, or the “Big Three,” were about to face a brand new ratings competitor. In an effort to drum up publicity for the debut of its primetime line-up, Fox Broadcasting Corp. had received permission to temporarily black out the iconic sign. For a few days, the world-famous photo op for tourists would instead read “Fox” instead of “Hollywood.”
Looking back on the marketing stunt, another word might have sufficed: “Bundy.”

Back in September, we reported that Sony Pictures Television is developing a spinoff of the beloved 1990s sitcom Married with Children, which would star David Faustino as Bud Bundy, who is grown up with a family of his own. We haven't heard anything regarding the spinoff since then, but, E! Online caught up with original Married With Children stars David Faustino and Christina Applegate, who confirmed that the Married...With Children Spinoff is in the works. Here's what David Faustino had to say.
"Sony has it. They're excited about it. They're working out some legal issues that we hope they work out. The whole cast, including Christina, is down to do little bits in it. The idea would be a pilot for a spinoff. That's all I can say right now. It involves me and few other people."

It's been about 20 years since the Married… With Children sitcom ended, but Bud Bundy is all grown up and might just return for a spin-off series! I watched this show all the time when it was on the air and I thought it was the funniest show.
The series launched the careers of Ed O'Neill, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate, and David Faustino. The new series is being developed at Sony Pictures Television and it will center on Faustino's Bud Bundy character. There's no word on if the actor will be reprising his role in the new show, or if any of the other original cast members will be involved in the potential spin-off, but at this point there's a chance any of them could.

Nearly 20 years after it went off the air, Sony Pictures Television is planning a reboot of Married with Children that will follow David Faustino as son Bud Bundy and his new family.
Sony, who produced the sitcom for Fox, is taking out the pitch to various networks. At this time, it is unclear if any other cast members will return.
The show originally starred Ed O'Neill as Dad Al Bundy. He is currently one of the main cast members of the very popular ABC sitcom Modern Family. Its unlikely he will return in a substantial role, though a cameo appearance or two is not out of the question. Katey Sagal, who played mom Peggy Bundy, is currently appearing in her final season of Sons of Anarchy and does not have another show currently in the works. Jason Bateman scored his second career Emmy nomination this year for playing Michael Bluth on "Arrested Development," eight years after first being nominated for the role.

Welcome to another edition of our upstart series, Mindhole Blowers, in which we troll the Internet and listen to DVD Commentaries to bring you what we hope is fascinating minutia. Typically, we look at movies (see our Mindhole Blowers columns on Cameron Crowe's Singles and Shane Black's Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), but today -- with the release of Horrible Bosses on the horizon -- I thought we'd take a look at a person, the fascinating and ridiculously durable Jason Bateman.
Jason Bateman has been acting now in Hollywood for 29 years. In that career, there are only two roles that I can identify in which he didn't play a variation on his "Jason Bateman" character, which is to say: Sly, dry wit and a personality halfway between ridiculously charming and spectacularly douchy. The Flying Monkey debates which has the bigger gay fanbase: True Blood or Glee? Also this week: Ant on playing a gay teenager at age 28, the greatness of Jonathan Groff, and more anti-gay 'tude on So You Think You Can Dance?
Have a question about gay male entertainment or life? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: What has the bigger gay fanbase: True Blood or Glee? – Lisa, Los Angeles, CA
A: Glee has more total viewers than True Blood – their last season finales drew 10.9 versus 5.1 million viewers, respectively – so it stands to reason that it probably has more gay viewers too.
But ratings may not tell the whole story. Just as in the greater culture, I think there might be something of a generational divide – with younger gay men probably tending to prefer Glee, and older folks maybe gravitating toward True Blood.

It's no secret that Katey Sagal has range. The actor played the big-haired Peggy Bundy on Fox's "Married With Children" for 11 years before segueing effortlessly into the role of one-eyed alien Leela on "Futurama." She's also made a few heartbreaking appearances on the ABC drama "Lost" as the woman who got away from John Locke. Still, even her biggest admirers were likely unprepared for her Machiavellian turn in the FX hit "Sons of Anarchy" as Gemma, a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang in Northern California. Manipulating her son and husband with moves that would make Lady Macbeth blush, Sagal makes for one bad mother. The actor had an edge in landing the job; the show was created by Kurt Sutter, a former writer-producer on "The Shield" and Sagal's husband of five years. But the part wasn't just handed to her. "It wasn't as easy as my husband saying, 'I've...
