He was a noted Shakespearean actor.

He played Ebenezer Balfour in both Kidnapped (1956) and Secuestrado (1960).

He made six films with Laurence Olivier: As You Like It (1936), Q Planes (1939), Casi un paraíso (1943), Enrique V (1944), Hamlet (1948) and Richard III (1955). Olivier also directed the latter three films.

Along with Esmond Knight and Russell Thorndike, he is one of only three actors other than Laurence Olivier himself to appear in all three Shakespearean films that Olivier directed: Enrique V (1944), Hamlet (1948) and Richard III (1955).

He appeared in ten films with Felix Aylmer: Her Last Affaire (1935), Tudor Rose (1936), As You Like It (1936), The Ghost of St. Michael's (1941), Vida y muerte del Coronel Blimp (1943), Casi un paraíso (1943), Enrique V (1944), César y Cleopatra (1945), Hamlet (1948) and Tres novelas de la vida (1950).

Like both his Vida y muerte del Coronel Blimp (1943) character John Montgomery Murdoch and his Dad's Army (1968) character Private James Frazer, he served in the Home Guard during World War II.

Son of William (1856-1903) and Jessie Ann Laurie (née Brown) (1858-1935).

A memorial service was held for him at St. Paul's Church, Covent Garden on 3rd November 1980.

Although he played Edward Chapman's son in Juno and the Paycock (1930), he was four years older than him in real life.

He was invalided out of the army in WWI.

Became a sgt at arms at the Tower of London.
