- He was an advocate of the Irish language and taught Irish language as well.
- He founded the Druid, an Irish repertory theatre company, in 1975 with Garry Hynes and Marie Mullen. He was a member of the Field Day Theater Company, a Northern Irish troupe with Brian Friel and Stephen Rea in 1980.
- 3 children, 1 girl and 2 boys in that order. Will be 50 shortly. Used to be a teacher but gave it up for the stage.
- Spoke fluent Irish and his children attended Irish speaking schools. [unusual even in Ireland in 1994].
- He is survived by his wife, Peige; his parents, May Lally and Tom Lally; a brother Tomas Lally; five sisters, Teresa Lally; Marie Lally; Sarah Lally; Nual Lally; and Rita Lally; and his three children, Saileog Lally; Darach Lally, and Mahgnus Lally.
- He was the eldest of seven children in Tourmakeady, County Mayo, Ireland. He attended St. Mary's College in Galway and University College in Galway.
