He was an advocate of the Irish language and taught Irish language as well.

He founded the Druid, an Irish repertory theatre company, in 1975 with Garry Hynes and Marie Mullen. He was a member of the Field Day Theater Company, a Northern Irish troupe with Brian Friel and Stephen Rea in 1980.

3 children, 1 girl and 2 boys in that order. Will be 50 shortly. Used to be a teacher but gave it up for the stage.

Spoke fluent Irish and his children attended Irish speaking schools. [unusual even in Ireland in 1994].

He is survived by his wife, Peige; his parents, May Lally and Tom Lally; a brother Tomas Lally; five sisters, Teresa Lally; Marie Lally; Sarah Lally; Nual Lally; and Rita Lally; and his three children, Saileog Lally; Darach Lally, and Mahgnus Lally.

He was the eldest of seven children in Tourmakeady, County Mayo, Ireland. He attended St. Mary's College in Galway and University College in Galway.
