‘The Daily Show’ Mocks Stephen A. Smith’s On-Air Hot Takes, Urges Him to ‘Try a Little Weed’ in Latest Biofilm | Exclusive Video
Image
Stephen A. Smith has become the latest target of “The Daily Show,” with the late night program releasing a new biofilm mocking the sports television personality for his various on-air takes.

The nearly 7-minute video, titled “Stephen A. Smith: Greatest of All Take-Havers,” starts with a look at his childhood, with Smith saying he was born in the Bronx and raised in Queens with the “greatest mom in the world.”

“That’s right, every other mom in the world is a scrub. I don’t care if your mother, Theresa, or that hot mom from The Brady Bunch,” Craig Kilborn says in a voice narration. “Those moms should be riding the bench behind Janet Smith.”

It proceeds to jump forward Smith’s enrollment at the Fashion Institute of Technology, which Kilborn said “might not have greatest tradition of sports” but “definitely had a playoff.”

“It was primarily a girls school,...

‘Comics Unleashed’ Returns to CBS Late-Night Schedule Following ‘Midnight’ Cancellation
Image
Byron Allen’s “Comics Unleashed,” a syndicated comedy round-table that had been a mainstay of CBS stations, is coming back to the network to — once again — fill some holes.

Two back-to-back half hours of the program will air following “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on CBS at 12:37 a.m. starting in the fall. The network said it plans to run the show throughout the 2025-2026 TV season, in the time slot previously occupied by “After Midnight,” which is ending following host Taylor Tomlinson’s decision to focus on stand-up comedy.

“’Comics Unleashed’ is a true passion for me, simply because this world can never have enough laughter,” said Byron Allen, founder of Allen Media Group, which produces the program, in a prepared statement. “I created this show so that the best comedians can all come together and help bring non-stop laughter.”

Use of Allen’s program gives the...

Lewis Black Isn’t Done Screaming, But He’s Actually More Optimistic Than You’d Think
Image
From Craig Kilborn to Jon Stewart to Trevor Noah to Jon Stewart again with four other rotating hosts, The Daily Show has evolved many times over its 29-year run. The one constant amid years of transformation? Lewis Black. For nearly three decades, the comic’s rage-filled recurring segment “Back in Black” has eviscerated stupidity in politics, regardless of host or the person living in the White House.

Lewis joined the show during the Clinton administration, which means he’s been with The Daily Show through the Monica Lewinsky scandal, 9/11, the Iraq War, the pandemic, the January 6th insurrection and now President Trump’s second term in office.

I recently spoke with Lewis to better understand how The Daily Show evolved to become such a massive vehicle for speaking truth to power and how the scope and tenor of its coverage has changed with each administration. He gave me his honest assessment of each,...

Why ‘After Midnight’ on CBS Will Not Return For Season 3
Image
In a surprising turn of events that’s got the late-night TV world buzzing, CBS has officially pulled the plug on After Midnight, hosted by comedy’s rising star Taylor Tomlinson. The network had quietly renewed the show for a third season but never made a public announcement, and now we know why – it’s not happening after all.

Tomlinson has decided to step away from the hosting gig to return to her stand-up roots, leaving CBS with a big decision to make about their late-night lineup. The show, which features celebrity guests competing in pop culture and social media challenges, will finish its run in June 2025.

This marks not just the end of Tomlinson’s brief but notable hosting career, but potentially the end of CBS programming in the post-midnight slot altogether – a significant shift in the late-night landscape that’s been part of CBS’s identity since 1995.

“You Rarely Have Partners That Good”: Stephen Colbert Reacts to ‘After Midnight’ Cancellation
Image
After 2 seasons of breaking the mold on late night, After Midnight will be ending. The second slot late night talk show will not be returning for a third season. The finale of the series will air in June. It comes on the heels of Taylor Tomlinson announcing she was stepping aside from the series to return to stand up. In a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly, Tomlinson shared, "Hosting After Midnight has genuinely been the experience of a lifetime, and I'll be forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible journey. Though it was an extremely tough decision, I knew I had to return to my first passion and return to stand-up touring full-time. I appreciate CBS, Stephen Colbert, the producers, and the entire After Midnight staff and crew for all the love, support, and unforgettable memories."

Stephen Colbert addressed the cancelation on his show, The Late Show.

‘After Midnight’ To End After Two Seasons, CBS To Stop Programming 12:30 A.M. Slot
Image
Despite the show quietly getting a third season renewal that had yet to be announced publicly, the late-night show “After Midnight,” hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, will conclude after just two seasons on CBS.

Instead of seeking out a replacement host or show, the network has opted to stop programming the post-“The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” time slot altogether, which technically aired at 12:30 a.m., but in reality ran Monday through Friday from 12:37-1:37 a.m. Et/Pt, with the preceding Stephen Colbert-hosted late night program airing from 11:35 p.m.-12:37 a.m. Et/Pt.

According to Deadline, it was Tomlinson’s decision to exit the show as she made it clear to the network and the show’s producers that she had an interest in returning to touring as a stand-up comic.

‘After Midnight’ Canceled After Two Seasons On CBS; Network Will Stop Programming 12:30am Slot
Image
CBS is halving its late-night output after canceling After Midnight, hosted by Taylor Tomlinson.

The network canceled the show, which airs at 12:30am, after two seasons. Tomlinson, a rising star in the stand-up world, said that she wanted to return to her “first passion” of touring.

As a result, CBS has decided to move out of programming the 12:30am slot, which was previously filled by The Late Late Show. This marks a major blow to late-night in general, which has seen the number of late-night shows airing across broadcast, cable and streaming, fall over the last few years.

CBS had quietly renewed the show for a third season but had not announced it publicly. Its second season will run through June.

Michael Kosta on ‘The Daily Show’s Role in the Second Coming of Donald Trump
Image
Michael Kosta is not a journalist. That’s the first thing the Daily Show host says when someone asks him a big, important news question meant for Diane Sawyer or Wolf Blitzer. But when I met with Kosta via Zoom to discuss The Daily Show’s role in Trump 2.0 and how it differs from Trump’s first go-around, he was happy to get into it. We also discussed his new memoir, Lucky Loser: Adventures in Tennis and Comedy, in which Kosta writes about the field he actually dreamed of being in: tennis — and how failing at that helped him to eventually excel in comedy.

Kosta has been with The Daily Show since 2017 — going from correspondent to fill-in host to now one of the show’s rotating hosts — so he’s seen the impact the show can have on its audience. “The number one thing people say to me when they...

The Small Town That Claims to Be the ‘Birthplace of Kermit the Frog’
Image
It’s not uncommon for towns to attract tourists by proclaiming themselves the birthplaces of famous historical figures and celebrities. Some spots even advertise their associations with fictional characters. Like Riverside Iowa, which brags that it’s the future birthplace of Captain Kirk. Yeah, apparently, hundreds of years from now, the leader of the Enterprise will be conceived under a pool table in one of their pubs.

Similarly, Leland, Mississippi is known as “the birthplace of Kermit the Frog.” The town has a Jim Henson museum full of Muppet artifacts and a “Rainbow Connection” bridge, named after Kermit’s signature song, complete with an official plaque noting that Leland is, in fact, the iconic frog’s birthplace. Metaphorically, speaking. There’s no story about Kermit’s parents mating in a local business.

We don’t want to in any way impede the tourism economy of this quaint town, but the...

“I’ve kissed the Mastersons. I’ve kissed everybody”: That ’70s Show Made 1 Actress Kiss Every Major Male Co-Star Except Topher Grace
Image
Having initially lied about her age to earn a shot at the auditions, Mila Kunis successfully landed the That ’70s Show gig opposite Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson, which would prove to be a breakout role for her. Although the actress has looked back fondly on her experience in the show, some aspects of the sitcom haven’t aged well.

The Daily Show May Have Just Saved Itself
Image
Long before "fake news" became a phrase some people used to dismiss anything they disagreed with, fake news was what made The Daily Show so popular. Although The Daily Show originally began in 1996 with Craig Kilborn in the host's chair, it was when Jon Stewart took over in 1999 that the Comedy Central series really took off. The Daily Show may have considered itself fake news, but it was the exact opposite. Under Stewart, the show gave us the real news in a comedic format while also seriously holding the rich and powerful accountable, no matter their political party.

Kal Penn Still Interested In Taking Over ‘The Daily Show’
Image
Jon Stewart might have returned to The Daily Show in 2024. However, Kal Penn has shown interest in taking over hosting duties if he leaves the show. Penn, who previously served as a guest host on the show, has had quite a career, both in media and in politics.

Penn Talked About His Two-Week Run On The Show

During the Global Citizens Festival back in September, Penn revealed he had hoped he could one day host The Daily Show. Back in 2023, Penn served as a guest host for The Daily Show for eight episodes.

Prior to this, Jon Stewart presented the series from 1999 to 2015, having taking on the role from Craig Kilborn. After Stewart initially left the show, Trevor Noah took over hosting duties until 2022. Without a permanent host, the show featured various guest hosts, with Stewart hosting Monday night shows in 2024.

In a conversation with People, Penn shared that,...

Hasan Minaj's Biggest Scandal Lost Him The Daily Show

Over the years, The Daily Show has employed some of the best talk show hosts, including Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. The people who lead The Daily Show have also become some of the richest talk show hosts. As a result, it makes sense that people want to host The Daily Show, even though they may have to deal with terrible guests and cope with criticism.

At one point in the past, there were rumors that Hasan Minhaj would be tapped to host The Daily Show. However, that never happened. Hasan later revealed that a scandal resulted in him losing out on hosting The Daily Show.

Watch Rob McElhenney, The Lawyer and the Original Dee in This Pre-‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Yoo-hoo Commercial
Image
Believe it or not, Fight Milk wasn’t the first not-exactly-milky drink that Ronald “Mac” Donald ever endorsed.

Before Rob McElhenney came up with the idea of shooting a shoestring-budget pilot for a sitcom about the biggest a-holes in Pennsylvania, he was a struggling actor in L.A. waiting tables in between acting gigs. The slightly embarrassing before-they-were-famous careers of McElhenney’s co-stars are already an integral part of the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia lore — Glenn Howerton starred in the hated failure of a sitcom That ‘80s Show before becoming Dennis Reynolds, and Charlie Day passed on an almost-as-bad show to work as an illiterate janitor. But McElhenney’s list of credits pre-2005 is, comparatively, not quite as notable or mockable as those of his collaborators.

However, there is one particularly fascinating and thankfully surviving clip from McElhenney’s acting career pre-Sunny that even includes cameos from a couple of his future co-stars.

Why Craig Kilborn Left The Late Late Show (& Where He Is Now)
Image
Craig Kilborn had a successful run as host of The Late Late Show, but left in 2004 due to feeling unfulfilled with late-night TV. Kilborn's departure wasn't due to conflict, but a desire to leave the repetitive late-night format; he enjoyed retirement with wine and good food. Kilborn now hosts a comedy podcast, The Life Gorgeous, showcasing his wit and vast knowledge in a freewheeling, ever-changing format.

Craig Kilborn is a Renaissance man when it comes to his body of work, appearing as a sports commentator, comedian, actor, and host of The Late Late Show. Kilborn's first introduction to national audiences came when he appeared as an anchor on ESPN's SportsCenter, alongside hosts Rich Eisen, Keith Olbermann, and Dan Patrick, where he introduced his deadpan style of comedy and rapid-fire wit to morning audiences. Not content with sports talk, Kilborn moved onto late-night TV, taking over the brand new The Daily Show as host.

‘The Daily Show’ showrunner Jen Flanz: ‘Some days the news gods give us more, some days less, but they never give us nothing’
Image
Given how divided the country is right now, it would seem it’s grown more challenging than ever to generate satire that appeals to the masses. But Jen Flanz has seen it all before. As a staffer on “The Daily Show” since 1997 and showrunner since 2019, the eight-time Emmy winner knows there’s always room for comedy, even when the United States seems largely to have misplaced its sense of humor. “It’s definitely harder than it used to be to tell jokes in general,” she acknowledges. “There’s a lot of sensitivities. Everything is very polarized. So you just have to call out hypocrisy where you see it and remember that the main goal of the show is to make people laugh, to inform them but also make it funny. We spoke with Flanz as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV Showrunners Panel. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

Dan Amira (‘The Daily Show’ head writer) on not expecting his Emmy win last year ‘because I read Gold Derby’ odds [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
For Dan Amira, the head writer for “The Daily Show,” winning the Emmy back in January for Best Variety Talk Series was really surprising, especially considering what certain outlets were saying in the lead up to the ceremony. “I certainly was not expecting it because I read Gold Derby! You had us like fourth or fifth and I read it and I was like, well, these are the experts,” he jokes with us during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). But the lowered expectations that our site provided him, actually helped him enjoy the experience even more. “I’m like, I guess I should just go in expecting to not win, which was actually great because if you win, you’re pleasantly surprised and if you lose, you’re like, well, I prepared for that.”

‘The Daily Show’ Asks Maga Faithful About a Trump Dictatorship

During The Daily Show segment “Jordan Klepper Fingers the Pulse” released Tuesday, correspondent Jordan Klepper headed to a Trump rally to ask supporters about presidential candidate Nikki Haley’s chances at the primary and the possibility of a Trump dictatorship, which the former president has alluded to and then later claimed he was kidding about it. To some Trump supporters, some of whom were dressed in American flag swim trunks and Maga caps, the answer rolled off their tongue.

One supporter suggested, “that’s what we need,” in reference to the dictatorship.

Jon Stewart returns to once-a-week duty hosting ‘The Daily Show’ tonight
Image
Some 8 1/2 years after leaving his iconic host seat on “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart returns to the Comedy Central staple tonight at 11 p.m. Et/Pt and will remain as host each Monday thereafter through the 2024 Election Cycle. His first guest be Zanny Minton Beddoes, editor-in-chief of The Economist. The debut episode will be simulcast on CMT, Logo, MTV, MTV2, Paramount Network, Pop and TV Land. The every-Monday hosting stint follows in the recent tradition of Rachel Maddow’s similar set-up at MSNBC.

Stewart hosted “The Daily Show” for 16 years, taking over from Craig Kilborn in 1999 and transforming it into appointment viewing with its blend of incisive media criticism and political satire. During Stewart’s tenure, the show won 24 Emmys and three Peabodys and served as a launch pad for the likes of Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Michael Che and Samantha Bee. Is Jon Stewart Still the Right Person to Host ‘The Daily Show?’
Image
Whenever a popular sitcom or drama from years ago tries to come back, I worry. The series that we love are so often a product of a specific moment in time for the people who make them, the characters on them, and the people watching. Change that moment, things start to feel wrong, and can even leave the audience questioning why they liked the original run in the first place.

The Daily Show isn’t exactly like those kinds of shows, though the hosts and correspondents work with scripted jokes,...

Can Jon Stewart's Return Save The Daily Show?
Image
The Daily Show has struggled to find a new identity since losing host Trevor Noah and has delayed appointing a new full-time host. Former host Jon Stewart will return as anchor of Monday editions through the November 2024 elections, with correspondents leading the rest of the week's shows. Late-night comedy shows, including The Daily Show, have experienced declining viewership due to the availability of political news and humor on smartphones and online platforms.

The past year has been a bit of a struggle for The Daily Show. Since losing host Trevor Noah at the end of 2022, the show has not found a new identity. A rotation of guest hosts occupied the anchor's chair in 2023, with no immediate plans for a permanent successor. Despite plans to place a new full-time host behind the desk in 2024, The Daily Show has delayed this and still has not done so. However, they nabbed a big...

Tom Johnson, ‘Daily Show’ Writer, Dies at 55
Image
Tom Johnson, who received two Emmy Awards for his writing on The Daily Show, has died. He was 55.

Johnson died “peacefully and unexpectedly” at his Los Angeles home on Jan. 14 of a cardiac issue, his wife, actress Rozie Bacchi, told The Hollywood Reporter.

“He never got to eat the Texas toast he was making, or the 4 lbs. of crab legs he found on sale and crammed in the freezer two nights prior,” she said in a statement.

“Tom had such a big heart and cared deeply about taking care of others. His work ethic was impeccable. He was fair, kind, talented, inclusive and funny as hell.”

Born on July 25, 1968, in Fairfax, Virginia, Johnson began his career after college and founded the Network Comedy Troupe. He also toured as a comedian and performed at venues across the country and on television.

Johnson was initially hired in 1996 as a writer on Comedy Central...

In 1996, Johnson was hired on the original staff of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with host Craig Kilborn, and remained on staff when Jon Stewart assumed the role three years later.

Jon Stewart Returning to ‘The Daily Show’ as Monday Host Through 2024 Election
Image
The Daily Show is bringing back beloved former host Jon Stewart on a part-time basis to shepherd the late-night show through the 2024 election season.

Following Trevor Noah’s exit in December 2022, the series spent 2023 relying on a revolving door of special guests and correspondents to hold down the fort while Comedy Central settled on a permanent host. However — despite Roy Wood Jr.’s very public pleadings at the Emmys — The Daily Show has opted not to bring in a full-time host, and instead will have Stewart return for Monday night broadcasts.

Jon Stewart will make a surprising return to The Daily Show, 25 years after starting on the show. He will host the Comedy Central late-night show one night a week through the 2024 election cycle.

Jon Stewart to Return as Part-Time ‘Daily Show’ Host Through Presidential Election
Image
Jon Stewart is returning as the host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s “Daily Show.” Before you get too excited, the assignment is part-time, and the plan is for him to stay on as host through the November 2024 presidential election cycle, and EP at least through 2025.

Stewart will host the program only on Mondays, but executive produce every episode. The other evenings will be hosted by a rotating panel of the show’s “All-Star Correspondents.” If you’re wondering why Stewart is taking the Monday slot, it’s because that’s traditionally the most-watched “Daily Show” episode of the week, and acts as catch up for all the news that’s gone on over the weekend.

Although “The Daily Show” began in 1996 with Craig Kilborn as its host, the show rose in the public consciousness during Stewart’s time hosting from 1999 to 2015. Under Kilborn, the show was mostly irreverent and focused on pop culture.

The program won an Emmy award for “Outstanding Variety Series” and its former host, Trevor Noah, and one of its former top contributors, Roy Wood, Jr., were on hand to take part. Veteran behind-the-scenes executives like Jen Flanz, who runs the program, and Daniel Radosh, a writer who has been with the series since the days of Jon Stewart, were easily viewed.

Despite the hoopla, there has not been a new episode of “The Daily Show” broadcast on its home, Paramount Global’s Comedy Central, since Kal Penn served as a guest on host on Thursday, December 14. There has not been a regular host of the series since Noah, who took over for Jon Stewart in 2015, left unexpectedly in December of 2022. You can’t blame the network for the whole thing.

25 Years After Joining ‘The Daily Show’, Could Jon Stewart Win Another Late-Night Emmy?
Image
January 11, 1999, 25 years ago to the day, was Jon Stewart’s first night hosting The Daily Show.

The comedian took over from Craig Kilborn, who had hosted the Comedy Central show from July 21, 1996. Stewart’s first guest was Michael J. Fox, promoting Spin City.

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart went on to win the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Series for ten consecutive years between 2003 and 2012, before losing to The Colbert Report, a show that he exec produced, for a couple of years, and then coming back to win in 2015 in his final season.

It’s a run that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver looked like it might replicate with seven wins in the category – then known as Outstanding Variety Talk Series – starting in 2016.

However, Oliver is now competing on Monday night at the primetime Emmys in a new category, Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, up against Saturday Night Live and A Black Lady Sketch Show,...

CBS Plans January 16 Launch for ‘After Midnight’
Image
CBS kicks off a new era in late-night on Tuesday, January 16, when it launches “After Midnight” at 12:37 a.m. hosted by comic Taylor Tomlinson.

The series, which will rely on a rotating series of panelists to discuss the latest trends and memes in the digi-sphere, will follow an original hour of CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

“After Midnight,” based on the premise of “@midnight,” a program that ran on Comedy Central between 2013 and 2017,” breaks late-night tradition at CBS, which has long depended on a more typical program after 12:30 a.m. But network executives, realizing that the business of wee-hours TV is in flux, canceled “The Late Late Show” that has run for decades in that slot, hosted by people such as Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, Craig Ferguson and James Corden. “After Midnight” is said to cost significantly less to produce — a boon in an era when...

Star Trek's Patrick Stewart Still Owns A Hilarious Prank Created By Data Himself
Image
Prior to his job playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," actor Patrick Stewart wasn't terribly well-known in the United States. One might have recognized him for his supporting roles in high-profile genre films like John Boorman's "Excalibur," David Lynch's "Dune," or Tobe Hooper's "Lifeforce," but the vast bulk of his career up to that point was on the British stage, or throughout the vast network of BBC television. Starting in 1966, Stewart began starring in productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing as the Player King in "Hamlet" (opposite David Warner) and as the Dauphin in "Henry V."  His status as a go-to player of well-known American fantasy characters wouldn't begin in earnest until 1987.

In his new autobiography "Making It So: A Memoir," Stewart recalls how the American publicity machine viewed him when he first started working on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." He...

Jon Stewart’s ‘The Problem’ at Apple Comes to Abrupt End Amid Creative Differences
Image
Jon Stewart is bowing out early from Apple.

The weekly talk series The Problem With Jon Stewart will not be moving forward with a third season on the streaming service, the New York Times first reported. Plans for an eight-episode third season were abandoned amid creative differences between the former Daily Show host and the tech company, specifically over potential topics and guests for the series.

Stewart reportedly told his staff Thursday that Apple disagreed over topics relating to China and artificial intelligence, causing concern among company executives.

According to the Hollywood Reporter,...

The Next Daily Show Host: What's the Delay?
Image
It's The Daily Show with... well, we're still not sure. Nearly a year after Trevor Noah signed off the iconic fake news program, there's still no one lined up to replace him. Replacing longtime hosts for iconic game and talk shows is never an easy task, but The Daily Show is unique in its case.

Typically, when a show cycles through multiple guest hosts without settling on a successor, that means the previous emcee abruptly left the job. However, Trevor Noah gave his departure notice months in advance, announcing it in September 2022 before walking away in December. While that's not as long as other hosts like David Letterman or Jay Leno, who each gave about a year of notice, it's still enough time to pick a successor.

Instead, Comedy Central has relied on guest hosts for the entirety of 2023, intending to name a permanent replacement early next year. Maybe they...

Foo Fighters Cover Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” During Ohana Festival Set: Watch
Image
Foo Fighters busted out a portion of the Led Zeppelin opus “Stairway to Heaven” during a break in their headlining set at the Ohana Festival on Sunday (October 1st).

The surprise rendition took place toward the end of the set. Dave Grohl appeared to stop the show while a member of the audience apparently was receiving medical attention, and he broke the silence with the opening arpeggios of “Stairway.”

“Did you figure that shit out or do I have to play fucking ‘Stairway to Heaven’?” asked Grohl, apparently addressing festival staff while still playing the song’s intro. “‘Cause I’ll fucking play this motherfucker, you know that, right?”

The band fell in, with keyboardist Rami Jaffee adding the iconic mellotron flute accompaniment as Grohl sang the opening verse. Finally, whatever was causing the delay got sorted out, and Grohl cut the song off before the chord change.

“Is that situation figured out?...

Hasan Minhaj’s ‘Emotional Truths’ Debacle Disqualifies Him From Hosting ‘Daily Show,’ Former Staffers Say | Exclusive
Image
To the average person, the New Yorker’s expose on Hasan Minhaj’s fabrications in his stand-up routine may be shocking. But three former “Daily Show” staffers who spoke exclusively with TheWrap said they were not surprised.

“There was always this suspicion that maybe this guy’s full of s–t. Maybe he’s exaggerating,” one former staffer told TheWrap, noting that Minhaj’s stories in his stand-up always seemed “too perfectly set up.”

The admissions by Minhaj that several incident of racism didn’t happen to him, or didn’t happen the way he recounted, should disqualify him to host the Comedy Central news-comedy show, they said.

“It’s extremely dangerous to cry wolf on racism, especially if you want to be the host of a very influential, politically-driven show,” a former “Daily Show” staffer said.

“I don’t know how [his staff] can take him seriously on day one when...

Hasan Minhaj Is Reportedly Being Eyed as the New "Daily Show" Host
Image
Hasan Minhaj could be taking over "The Daily Show." According to an Aug. 1 report from Variety, Minhaj is seen as the top candidate to lead the Comedy Central satirical news program into its new era following Trevor Noah's exit. The outlet noted that no deal has been finalized yet, but talks and auditions are leading in Minhaj's direction. Reps for Minhaj did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment, and "The Daily Show"'s reps could not be reached.

Minhaj was previously a correspondent on "The Daily Show" from 2014 to 2018, during Jon Stewart and Noah's tenures as hosts. The comedian has two Netflix specials: 2017's "Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King" and 2022's "Hasan Minhaj: The King's Jester," plus a 2018 Comedy Central special titled "Goatface."

In 2018, Minhaj began hosting his own Netflix series "Patriot Act," a weekly show about political topics. However, the streamer canceled the series in 2020. That year,...

‘The Late Late Show’ Exec Producer Rob Crabbe Moves Into Daytime As Showrunner For ‘The Talk’
Image
Exclusive: Rob Crabbe, who has served as exec producer on The Late Late Show with James Corden for eight years, is moving from late-night into daytime.

Crabbe has been named as showrunner and exec producer of CBS’ The Talk. He replaces Kristin Matthews, who Deadline revealed earlier today was leaving the show after 13 years.

The move will see Crabbe, who was the co-showrunner along with Ben Winston of Corden’s hit late-night show, stay in the CBS family.

Crabbe teamed with Corden and Winston on The Late Late Show in 2015 and the pair remained in charge throughout the run of the show, a rarity in late-night television. He was part of the team that landed a slew of Emmy nominations for both The Late Late Show with James Corden and Carpool Karaoke, one of the show’s breakout segments that also became a spinoff series for Apple.

Before working on The Late Late Show,...

The finale episode of “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was a success for CBS. According to the network, the last episode saw a 77% increase in viewership in its season-to-date average. The talk show posted its largest audience on any night of the week since Sunday, 24, 2021, which is when “The Late Late Show” followed the AFC Championship Game.

For its finale, CBS aired two different episodes, both of which were also available to stream on Paramount+. The first was “The Last Last Late Late Show With James Corden Carpool Karaoke Special,” an hourlong show that premiered at 10 p.m. Et/Pt and featured appearances from Adele and Tom Cruise. Marketed as Corden’s official last “Carpool Karaoke,” that primetime special averaged 3.56 million viewers. That was an increase of 32% from Corden’s last “Carpool Karaoke” special,...

James Corden’s ‘Late Late Night’ Crew Begs Seth Meyers to Hire Them on Brink of Finale: ‘Available as Soon as Tomorrow’ (Video)
James Corden in The Late Late Show with James Corden (2015)
With “The Late Late Show With James Corden” coming to an end, crew members took advantage of Corden’s interview with “Late Night” host Seth Meyers to ask for a job.

On Monday night, the routine interview between these two late night colleagues was interrupted by several members of Corden’s team asking if there’s room for them at “Late Night With Seth Meyers.” Even bandleader and comedian Reggie Watts got in on the joke.

The segment started off as usual before one of Corden’s cameramen — identified only as Will — interrupted the pair. “Just wanted you to know, man, this shot looks great. Got just the right amount of headroom, perfectly centered. Really captures your essence,” the cameraman told Meyers.

Let Roy Wood Jr. Host The Daily Show Full Time, You Cowards
Image
Okay, I admittedly came in hot by calling the folks at Comedy Central "cowards" in that headline, because that's probably not the correct word to use to describe a channel that has been letting Trey Parker and Matt Stone run wild for over 25 years. When it was announced last fall that Trevor Noah would be leaving "The Daily Show" after seven fantastic years, fans immediately started fantasy booking his successor. There was a big push for Samantha Bee, of the recently canceled "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" to become the show's first full-time female host, with others hoping the job went to one of Noah's roll of correspondents. Comedy Central instead announced that they would showcase a weekly rotation of guest hosts, with some of comedy's smartest minds sitting behind "The Daily Show" desk.

Things kicked off with "Saturday Night Live" alum Leslie Jones, with Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, Chelsea Handler,...

James Corden wants to go back to his theater roots
Image
James Corden, host of “The Late Late Show” since 2015, spoke candidly from the stage of The Paley Center in Los Angeles on Sunday. The London-born 44-year-old comic and two producers on his CBS late-night show, Ben Winston and Rob Crabbe, took something of a victory lap as they wind down their tenure in the 12:30 time slot. They have 12 more episodes to shoot, and are planning some big names (and more carpool karaoke segments) for the grand finale.

Bryan Cranston (a good get!) hosted the panel, during which time Corden spoke about the uncertainty he feels about his future employment. “I haven’t felt this scared since I decided to take the show, to move here,” he said. “I haven’t felt on such unstable ground,” but added, “I have to embrace that fear.”

He intends to bring his family back to England and hopes to get back to live theater.

James Corden’s ‘Late Late Show’ Set for April 27 CBS Sign-Off
Image
James Corden aims to leave the late-night stage in a big way.

CBS plans to broadcast the last hour of its “The Late Late Show,” which Corden has hosted since March of 2015, on Thursday, April 27, and will add a primetime special that night to help mark the occasion.

Tom Cruise will reunite with Corden for one big sketch to air during the primetime special. Cruise has previously joined Corden on “The Late Late Show” for segments include daredevil stunts such as piloting fighter jets and skydiving. In this new meeting, Corden will have Cruise take part in an epic musical performance during “The Lion King” at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood.

CBS said additional details for the special will be announced in coming weeks along with guest stars who will join Corden during his last two months on the program. Corden is the fourth — and last — person to lead “The Late Late Show,...

The Late Late Show With James Corden Is Being Replaced With A Reboot Of @Midnight, Chris Hardwick Reportedly Not Returning
Image
In April 2022, James Corden announced that he would be stepping down from his duties at "The Late Late Show" after hosting the late-night staple since 2015. Many speculated about who would take his spot as the successor to Tom Snyder, Craig Kilborn, and Craig Ferguson in the 12:35 a.m. time slot on CBS' schedule. But as we move closer to Corden's final days on the show, which are scheduled to air in spring 2023, no one has officially emerged as the next host. And it appears that the reason for this is that the network is doing away with the series entirely in favor of a fan-favorite format that debuted a decade ago that was canceled after 600 episodes.

Points if you guessed "@midnight."

According to Deadline, CBS is bringing the improvisational internet-themed panel game show out of Viacom storage and refreshing it for a whole new audience. The reboot will be...

Chris Hardwick in @midnight (2013)
CBS to Reboot ‘@midnight’ as Replacement for ‘The Late Late Show With James Corden,’ Stephen Colbert to Produce
Chris Hardwick in @midnight (2013)
CBS plans to reboot the improv comedy show “@midnight” as a replacement for “The Late Late Show With James Corden,” according to multiple media reports.

Stephen Colbert is set to executive produce the reboot of the series that ran from 2013 to 2017 on Comedy Central. Though Chris Hardwick hosted “@midnight,” a game show that posed Internet-themed questions to its three guests, during its Monday through Thursday airing at the time, Hardwick is not expected to return to the reboot.

The reboot marks a shakeup in the network’s current slate, ending “The Late Late Show” after nearly 27 years, though the change could be expected after CBS CEO George Cheeks shared his plans to experiment with the late night slot.
