Subhash K Jha, in another This Day That Year feature, he takes a look back at the fabulous satire of Shyam Benegal’s Well Done Abba, which released in 2009.

Drawn from the innermost recesses of its extraordinarily versatile, profound, and prolific creator’s mind, somewhat like the water that emerges from Boman Irani’s well at the end of this delicately-drawn satire on babu-giri and red-tapism, Well Done Abba is a little sparkling gem of a film.

Its humour, warmth and tenderness are not as easily obtainable as in Benegal’s previous comedy Welcome To Sajjanpur, which was far more readily and immediately engaging. Well Done Abba takes longer to settle and sink into our satiated sensibilities. Long parts of the film describing the Hyderabadi protagonist Armaan Ali’s (Boman Irani) close encounters with babu-giri and the bewildering maze of the bureaucracy (somewhat like Pankaj Kapoor in the serial Office Office...

Bollywood and TV actor Ravi Jhankal is currently seen in the show ‘Rajjo’ playing the role of a grandfather of the male lead Arjun, depicted by Rajveer Singh.

The story revolves around a young girl Rajjo from Uttarakhand, played by Celesti Bairagey, and how she is struggling to reach her goal with the help of Arjun.

Ravi’s character is a huge support for both Arjun and Rajjo in the show.

Ravi said: “I am playing the role of Keshav or dadaji who is the head of the family. He is someone who wants Arjun, his grandson, to do whatever he likes and wants all his wishes to be fulfilled.”

Ravi is known for his roles in movies like ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’, ‘Sardari Begum’, ‘Rudaali’, ‘Chameli Ki Shaadi’ and he also worked in several shows such as ‘Swabhimaan’, ‘Hitler Didi’, ‘Savdhaan India’ and others.

His last year's release Welcome To Sajjjanpur was earlier titled Mahadev Ka Sajjanpur [based on the character played by Shreyas Talpade - Mahadev] before the new (and more multiplex friendly) title came into being. Now history is repeating itself as the title of his latest film Abba Ka Kuan too has gone for a change. The film would henceforth be called Well Done Abba. "It is much more audience friendly title, isn't it", says a prominent crew member, "Not many would have been able to comprehend what Abba Ka Kuan stood for.
