Netflix's New Action Thriller Series 'Mercy for None' Lands Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Netflix’s new action thriller outing is showing no mercy with critics. Ever since Keanu Reeves first demonstrated his affinity for headshots and brutal revenge in the first John Wick, new movies in the genre have been trying to live up to the legacy of Baba Yaga. Following a former gangster and expert enforcer, the series delivers all the brutal and bloody action that fans of the genre could possibly want as our antihero returns to the fray (and brings his trusty baseball with him) after the mysterious death of his brother. The series is titled Mercy for None, and critics have been heaping praise on the action thriller series, which has now debuted with a rare perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mercy for None Season 1 Review: A Masterclass in Action, A Failure in Story
Image
A man leaves a world of violence, severing his own Achilles tendon as a permanent declaration of his exit. For eleven years, Nam Gi-jun lives a life of peace. That peace is shattered when his younger brother is murdered, pulling the legendary gangster back into the grim, neon-soaked underworld of rival gangs he fought to escape.

His return is not a negotiation; it is a reckoning. Gi-jun’s quiet retirement is over, and his quest for answers sets him on a violent collision course with the city’s most powerful and dangerous figures. The promise he made to himself is now secondary to the promise of retribution for his brother.

The Stoic Juggernaut

So Ji-sub’s performance as Nam Gi-jun is a study in physical expression. He is a man of few words, whose profound sadness and simmering rage are communicated through the weight of his posture and the brutal efficiency of his actions.

The subtitled Korean export, Dr. Cheon And Lost Tallisman, is an action fantasy that’s long on special effects and short on character development. Dr. Cheon (Gang Dong-Won) is descended from a line of shamans, but uses his roots and secular education to provide fake exorcisms. For a fee, of course. His sidekick in the grift, Beom-choen (Huh Joon-ho), handles the tech simulations of supernatural activity to convince the suckers they’re actually getting the benefits of an occult remedy. Things change radically when a young woman, Yoo-gyeong, (Esom), hires them for their first real demonic possession – her kid sister. Some things happen that aren’t part of their act, opening new possibilities for their vocation.

Major U.S. acquisitions of Asian film titles have been scarce at the American Film Market so far this year, but business within the region nonetheless has been humming. The much-anticipated Korean period action tentpole Noryang: Deadly Sea has scored a deal at AFM for Japan distribution with Tokyo-based Twin Co. Ltd.

Seoul-based sales agent Acemaker Movieworks is repping the title to international buyers.

The film is the third and final title in director Kim Han-min’s trilogy about battles led by the famed Korean admiral Yi Sun-shin that started with The Admiral: Roaring Currents in 2014 and was followed by Hansan: Rising Dragon in 2022. The first film earned $138 million worldwide, which was the most ever by a Korean film at the time.

The new installment depicts the historical Battle of Noryang, the last major battle of the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598). The new film stars Kim Yun-seok as Yi Sun-sin,...

Back when Kim Han-min made “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” in 2014, little did he know that the film would go on to become the highest grossing Korean film of all time, a record still held by it, or that he would go on to make a trilogy of features on its lead character, legendary real-life naval commander, the much loved Admiral Yi Sun-shin. Yet here we are, just under a decade since the release of “The Admiral”, and the final film in the Yi Sun-shin trilogy looks finally set to release, following on from last year’s “Hansan: Rising Dragon”.

Synopsis

In 1598, the seven-year Imjin War nears an end as Wae invaders prepare to withdraw from Joseon. Admiral Yi Sun-shin leads an allied fleet of Joseon and Ming ships to annihilate the Wae army. Joseon, Ming, and Wae forces clash at Noryang Strait, the deadly sea where Admiral Yi fights his last valiant battle.

Netflix's Bloodhounds: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know
Image
Netflix has been on a roll this year with the constant addition of Korean webtoon adaptations like Weak Hero Class 1, Duty After School, and the Lookism animated series. While it premiered several of these shows the previous year—including the hit zombie series, All of Us Are Dead, which became a blockbuster—this year has an abundance of adaptations lined up. Since Korean webtoons aren't as popular as Japanese comics, Netflix's choice to produce live-action adaptations of these works brings the creators a lot of recognition.

In light of the webtoon's popularity, the new action thriller series Bloodhounds has piqued audiences' interest. Kim Jo Hwan, better known as Jason Kim, directs the series, which stars Woo Do Hwan, Lee Sang Yi, Park Sung Woong, and Huh Jun Hoo, all of whom are well-known in the Korean drama industry.

Initially, the series was intended to be titled "Hunting Dogs," but that was changed to "Bloodhounds,...
