- A man and his wife are departing for the opera when he accidentally burns his shirtfront with a cigarette. He puts her in the car and tells her to wait while he changes. The wife returns inside, however, and catches the husband with the maid, who was trying on some of her mistress's finery, and isn't fully dressed. An argument ensues and the wife refuses to listen to explanations. She threatens divorce and tells him he can keep the maid. Meanwhile, the maid's suitor receives a postcard inviting him to call while the master and mistress are out. He arrives and the husband proposes a scheme whereby he hides in the wife's wardrobe and pretends to be a secret admirer. As planned, the husband catches them together and the wife realizes that things aren't always as they appear, and begs her husband's forgiveness.
- Based on several medieval mystery plays, including the late 15th-century English morality play "Everyman". The premise is that the good and evil deeds of one's life will be tallied by God after death, as in a ledger book. The drama is the allegorical accounting of the life of Everyman, who represents all mankind.
