Solid 10/10 movie except every 5 minutes it's like hey remember Gladiator you loved Gladiator right. Set it 100-200 years later and make Lucius his own person and stop referencing Maximus every 10 lines. As a standalone movie it would have been on par with the first but it doesn't allow itself to standalone. Most great sequels dont depend on their predecessors so this shouldn't either honestly. Paul Mescal as Lucius is a fantastic main character and Pedro Pascal, Joaquin Phoenix, and Denzel Washington all give killer performances. The plot is A tier and the action sequences are even more thrilling than the 2000 film. Just stop referencing Maximus every single scene and let this be it's own story.
