Young married couple Andres and Ana (who still smokes and drinks alcohol despite being pregnant) are invited by another couple to their large country house for a drink. They end up having to stay the night and are seduced into a seance followed by a black magic orgy. The movie starts off with an intro by a so-called expert on the occult telling us that Devil worship is very real, however he includes photos of Alex Sanders, who was head of British Wicca and NOT a Satanist! First scene has a Black Mass in which a middle aged priest spends a lot of time fondling a naked woman lying on the altar before sacrificing her. Satan's Blood does have plenty of horror elements - Black Magic, a Ouija Board, a creepy doll, several gory kills, a Gothic mansion plus the obligatory night time thunderstorm - however I would say that this movie's main purpose is to show a lot of naked flesh. And it does this well, coupled with some soft core sex scenes. On a side note I did enjoy seeing scenes of late 1970's Madrid. I was lazy and watched the English dubbed version, I will probably watch this slice of Euro-sleaze again one day but in Spanish.

"Right folks, things are getting out of hand here!" Young couple Mike (Josh Randall) and his girlfriend Sheryl (Brianna Brown) take a break from the city and go on a hiking trip in the mountains of West Virginia (though I believe that it was filmed in Romania). They come across an unfriendly trio of young male rednecks, then having set up camp Sheryl vanishes. Mike's search for and discover of her becomes a nightmare of unimaginable horror. I bought this on DVD some time ago and recall liking it, I have now just given it a second viewing and although I still enjoyed it I wasn't quite so impressed. The acting is all fine and the mountain scenery looks wonderful. The film wastes no time in showing some explicit gore though it is a bit of a wait for the rest of it, an axe in a head being my favourite effect. Fans of horror movies such as Wrong Turn, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and even Hostel should find something to like here. It's a backwoods horror though I would refrain form calling it a slasher movie, there is plenty of slashing going on but there is more to the plot than just that. No spoilers but the ending hints at a possible - and pointless - sequel. Timber Falls is a place that is worth a visit on your TV screen.

Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote his novel "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde" in 1886, a stage adaptation followed in 1887 and then it was first filmed in 1908. Countless other films were to follow, I have seen a great deal of them, this version is probably the most boring to date. The late David Hemmings, a fine actor, plays both Jekyll (with a Scottish accent and sporting mutton chops) and his evil alter ego Edward Hyde. Instead of turning into a hideous brute Hyde is actually a young and handsome man, an interesting though not original idea as Hammer had already done this back in 1960. This is a BBC film that looks more like a stage play though there are plenty of exterior scenes. I enjoyed seeing the dilapidated London Docklands, I can remember going on a school trip and seeing them. Jekyll's house stands on the banks of the Thames, look closely and you can see modern office blocks! Also in the cast are Diana Dors, punk singer Toyah (who I didn't recognise until reading the closing credits) and Gretchen Franklin, best known for playing Ethel in the long running soap "Eastenders". At just under two hours the running time is far too long, the film is too talky, it is very boring and lacking in horror. In fact the most frightening sight is that of Jekyll's comb-over, ha ha! Hyde's perverse sexuality is touched upon when he belittles a 14 year old girl prostitute, then later on he abuses a rent boy, these are the only really unsettling scenes. Much of the camera work and out of place synthesizer musical score make it look and sound more 1980 than 1880's. The dull and grainy print that Talking Pictures TV (UK) screened didn't help my viewing pleasure either, though as always I am grateful to them for screening these old and largely forgotten movies. There are many far better versions of this classic tale available, I would only recommend this one to people who are Jekyll/Hyde completists.
