This is an amazing second feature from the Director of Revenge. This is an absolutely insane Cronenberg-esque body horror where an ageing star can "reverse" the effects of age by using a black market drug called the Substance. Demi Moore and Dennis Quaid give stellar performances at the top of their game. There are a number of complications for the lead aa she takes the drug. The film moves along at a fair pace to keep you intrigued during it's two hour plus runtime. The film is visually stunning with a climax which is not easily forgotton. The theme of double standards of beauty rubs throughout. Highly recommended.
This is literally a work of art. The film is a bleak yet beautiful tale of revenge in the underbelly of a UK city. This has strong performances throughout and the tale is told with masterful precision. Genius. The camerawork and use of gritty locations adds to the sense of unease throughout the film. A man is released from prison and the tale is told from the side of the victims family. The story is interwoven with different perspectives and angles. The use if lighting gives the film a neo-noir edge. Pete Bird gives the performance which is equal in measure to the protagonist. If you enjoy a well crafted slow burn then please give this a watch whenever it gets a release. This film needs to be seen.
If you are looking for an entertaining, funny and downright insane independent Horror Comedy than this is your film. An ancient mask ends up on a porn film set which leads to a sinister and hilarious series of events. The jokes hit the mark and there are some pretty inventive deaths. Being fresh and original is difficult these days but Mask of the Devil pulls this off (no pun inteneded). Martin Payne plays one of the most sleaziest characters you will find on a film set. Kemal Yildrim has one of the best deaths I have seen recently on screen. This is by no means perfect but the finished product is way superior than it's limited budget suggests. I have seen this twice now and am likely to watch it again. Perfect with Pizza and drinks on a Friday night.
