Whether you're an RTD fan or not pretty much all of fandom agrees that the strongest episodes in his original 2005 series 1 were the guest written episodes so I was super excited about this one.
Unfortunately this felt like a parody of Pride and Prejudice, I kept expecting Kryten to turn up in a tank and announce that "supper is ready". And to be honest... I was kind of hoping for that moment. This isn't a view of a Britain that ever existed and as such you're never too concerned about any of the lives lost, they are just NPCs.
The aliens look cheap unconvincing, I'm reminded of Vengeance on Varos when Peri is turned into a bird. There's not much of a plot, infact I half wonder if this isn't poking fun at cosplayers (a far cry from the wonderful character of Osgood).
There's a hint of Human Nature/ Family of Blood in the tale, and unfortunately the comparison doesn't serve it well.
Even with River Song he is so repressed what she doubts he loves her; the characterisation here of calling someone hot every 5 seconds really doesn't match the one of the more consistent characteristics of the Doctor; but that feels like a constant issue this series - the Doctor does, of course, cry once again in this episode. It's like the Doctor got fitted with Data's overactive emotion chip from Generations
A huge disappointment with some nice moments. It might be more memorable than a historical like The Woman Who Lived, but it definitely isn't a better story - nor is the makeup an improvement.
