  • "Release the Kraken!"

This review is absolutely biased, and proudly so. I've loved gods, monsters, and mythology for as long as I can remember, and Clash of the Titans taps directly into that lifelong passion.

For me, this film embodies everything I want out of a mythological adventure, divine grudges, monstrous beasts, heroic quests, and an ancient world teetering between chaos and fate. It felt exhilarating from start to finish.

At its heart, the story is fairly straightforward, the gods feel slighted by mankind's defiance, and Hades, ever the opportunist, exploits this tension to unleash vengeance upon humanity. The city of Argos becomes ground zero for divine punishment, and only Perseus, the demigod son of Zeus, can stop the Kraken's wrath.

Yes, it's a simple tale of revenge and rebellion, but honestly, that's all it really needs to be. Mythology isn't about subtlety, it's about bold emotions, epic consequences, and larger-than-life stakes.

The film delivers on that front, especially with its lineup of creatures. My favorite by far is Medusa, part lethal elegance, part primal terror. She slithers with purpose, striking down warriors with speed and precision. There's a brutal grace to her, and visually, her lair is one of the film's standout set pieces.

Then there are the massive scorpions, rising from the desert like ancient tanks, and of course, the mighty Kraken, barely on screen, visually gorgeous, and still unforgettable.

Casting was a strong point. Seeing Liam Neeson as Zeus was a thrill, commanding and imposing in his shimmering armor. Ralph Fiennes brings a whispery menace as Hades, somewhere between ghostly and godly, while Luke Evans as Apollo and Mads Mikkelsen as Draco (the hardened warrior) round out a solid ensemble. I especially liked Gemma Arterton as Io, she was calm, composed, and a grounding presence throughout Perseus' journey. Her chemistry with Perseus hints at romance without overplaying it.

As for Sam Worthington as Perseus... I wanted to like him more. He had the look, and the reluctant hero angle works on paper, but his performance lacked that spark, that charisma or edge that would have made Perseus truly compelling. The role demands a mix of divine anger and human vulnerability, and instead, we get something too restrained, too flat. He's not bad, just a little too quiet for a character at the center of a god-sized conflict.

Visually, the film mostly delivers. The setting, particularly the ancient Greek landscapes and temples, has a grandness that pulled me in. Though Argos felt a bit hollow, impressive from a distance, but missing the soul and grit you'd expect from a city cursed by the gods.

Sure, the movie has flaws. The dialogue can be clunky, the emotional beats don't always land, and at times it plays things too safe when it could've gone deeper into divine betrayal, reality tv drama or human tragedy. But when you're riding Pegasus into battle or watching statues come to life, those concerns fade.

Clash of the Titans is far from perfect, but it doesn't need to be. It's a love letter to ancient myths, fast, fun, and full of gods behaving badly. If you, like me, find joy in watching titanic beasts clash and celestial powers collide, this film is a thrill ride that's well worth taking.

    7/10.

  • "We were all four of us an arrangement around a missing centerpiece, as incoherent as a verbless sentence."

Edward Norton's Motherless Brooklyn is a film of mood, method, and unmistakable heart, an intricate, intentional, and beautifully executed passion project from one of Hollywood's most quietly brilliant talents. While it may not have the breakneck pacing or blood-soaked crescendos of Goodfellas or Once Upon a Time in America, this film offers something more grounded, a man's slow, vulnerable search for truth in a world not to dissimilar to our own where power writes the rules.

At the center of it all is Norton himself, playing Lionel Essrog, a private investigator with Tourette's syndrome and a photographic memory. Norton doesn't just act, but he inhabits Lionel with care and nuance. You feel his twitching anxiety in tense silences, his outbursts not played for spectacle, but humanity. There are moments where you fear for him, not because of the case he's chasing, but because the world so clearly isn't built for someone like him. His vulnerability becomes the film's quiet engine.

While the story itself doesn't necessarily dive deep into unexpected twists or layered conspiracies, Motherless Brooklynthrives in character. It's methodical, yes, intentionally slow, but like a jazz solo, it rewards patience. The narrative burns at a steady simmer, more concerned with emotional truth than plot pyrotechnics.

Bruce Willis, as Frank Minna, makes a brief but effective appearance, laying the emotional groundwork for Lionel's journey. It's a shame he disappears so early, while Willem Dafoe's Gilbert, though central to the mystery, occasionally feels subdued, lacking that wild emotional spark Dafoe has mastered elsewhere. Alec Baldwin, on the other hand, fits the mold of the villain almost too well: a cold, self-serving symbol of unchecked power. He's very easy to despise.

Bobby Cannavale is the only character who truly oozes that classic noir menace, shady, slick, and untrustworthy. In contrast, Gugu Mbatha-Raw's Laura Rose brings a breath of fresh air. She radiates not only innocence but a quiet strength and independence, softening the film's rougher edges while grounding it in emotional balance.

As for the mystery itself, it doesn't so much twist and turn as it circles, always smoldering. Some may find the ending anticlimactic, but for me, it was steeped in realism. It doesn't try to blow your mind; instead, it lands in a place of quiet understanding. You sense that something larger is at play that for some characters, the game was always about money, payoff, or power. But Lionel's story ends with something rarer in noir: closure.

In the end, Motherless Brooklyn isn't trying to be gritty or shocking, it's trying to be honest. And in that, it succeeds. It may not be a classic in the traditional sense, but it's a rare kind of noir, one with a beating heart and something to say.

    6/10.
