The most realistic view of frontier life. Drought, badland, grasshopper plagues, bad crops, child loss, madness. The Homestead Act was to give relief to the landless. It would take the teaming poor of the cities out to an area of free land so they could become the American Myth Ideal ,the independent small producer. However the railroads had scarfed up most of the good land when they built the RRs. Large promoters pushed crummy land to prospective buyers. Like Florida land scams, but in the west. Arid areas were settled and it was usually too dry to farm. Ranches might do better there,so the allotments were increased. The city poor were not farmers and had no $$ to invest, and skill to start up. No wonder people went crazy. You still had Indians and bandits in some areas as well. I dont see why HS is called plain, she isnt. TLJ is limited to cowboy roles he fits those. He is not a great actor. I give it a 7 because I am partial to westerns, still. Must be my age showing.
Very English. Starts well. N ice settings. Then gets almost comedic and ultimately boring. As usual the caste / class system is on full display. The Entitled losers. Truthfully, I liked the crooks better. That Asian Pothead is a hoot. Fredward is useless. Eddy is at least competent to handle the crisis when it arrives. I assume he was part of some UN peacekeeping force in the beginning. I got tired of it and never watched beyond episode 3. My wife who is an anglo phile, lived and worked there left the room. Boring. Enough.

Westerns are westerns. They need to be set in the appropriate period, my opinion. This one is a mess. Big game hunter, sheep wars, Scottish vs Irish? The one true thing in this is that the era of the big beef ranch was long over by 1923. Our own family had a large livestock operation in NEVADA after the civil war. They had sheep and cattle. I think beef first. It was gone by 1895. Sold out and ended. I know nothing about Montana . Many very rich people have places there. Nice scenery. The same with Wyoming. Mining is in decline. The politics are dark red. I just dont get the high reviews for this. Harrison Ford is a character, not an actor. I also fail to get the muddled timeline with the Dutton family. John , the ex Confederate father and the mother reached Montana in 1883. Then the father died? His brother came to Montana and found the mother frozen dead too? So who is HArrison Ford? What happened to the kid John?
