Probably the best thing about this film-besides the color-was the cast. Danny Kaye gets top billing & he was good--but he had the backing of Virginia Mayo, Vera-Ellen, Steve Cochran, Eve Arden, Walter Able--and more. Virginia Mayo made a couple of films with Kaye & also did a couple with Cochran ( check out "White Heat" ). Vera-Ellen filmed mostly @ MGM--but her last film was "White Cristmas", playing opposite Danny Kaye. Brian Donlevy played the part of the fighter in the stage play--the part that Steve Cochran played in the movie. The Kid From Brooklyn proved to be a very profitable film. Fay Bainter does a small bit & she carries it off extremely well. Eve Arden and her endless wisecracks were a kick.

I'm a big fan of George Montgomery films--and he looks rugged & handsome, as always, in this one. Both Gene Tierney & Lynn Bari fall in love with him and, frankly, who can blame them. He plays an American newsreel cameraman in Burma & China just prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. After escaping from a Japanese prison, he goes to Mandalay where he meets & falls in love with Gene Tierney. He has a booklet containing some vital military info--so there are spy's on his trail. George Montgomery had a long Hollywood career & he was always interesting to watch (and,frankly, I see little comparison between him & Mr. Gable

New face Bryce Johnson held me from the moment this film began with a performance that knocked me out! He was able to overcome a muddled script and absurd story by the sheer power of his performance and engaging looks. A star is born! The script was so convoluted that I gave up even trying to figure it out so I just sat back and feasted my eyes on Bryce Johnson who has the appeal of stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood. In an era of young hunks Bryce stands out because he is so convincingly normal - the guy next door - anyone's best friend. He has the same appeal that John Corbett has and which has made that actor so successful and I think Bryce will follow right in Corbett's footsteps. The storyline is shocking and may put some people off, but Bryce is so appealing that even the most disturbing moments of the story did not keep me from watching all of the film. I look forward to following this young actor's career.
