I was watching this last night while trying to avoid actually finishing my American Lit homework, and I have to say, while it is a romantic comedy, and we all know how predictable they are, this one was actually pretty clever. Every turn I knew what was going to happen, but the filmmakers made it in such a way that you forgot that it was being predictable, and I think that's what succeeded for it. It will most likely never join the ranks of "When Harry Met Sally" or "10 Things I hate About You" in terms of romantic comedy classics, but standing on its own, it was an endearing film that shows that when you marry, you're not marrying one other person, you're marrying their entire family. It is a family movie, but all in all, a cute one.
I think this film is amazing. It's just all kinds of fun. Forget that Pierce Brosnan can't really sing (incidentally, the second time I saw this, and the numerous times I've listened to the soundtrack, he's kind of grown on me), and that the cinematography is horrid. It shouldn't matter. It's a fun movie with a fabulous cast of characters, and dazzling Greek scenery. For a great escapist film, "Mamma Mia" is the one to rent! I think everyone can relate to Sophie, wanting to know who her father is, thinking that's where her future lies. Or with Donna, whose past comes back to haunt her in the form of three flings from back in the day. But lucky for both of them, they each have two supportive best friends (who are carbon copies of each other. Donna=Sophie, Rosie/Tanya=Lisa/Ali), and for Donna, an entire Greek Chorus telling her what she wants is right in front of her face. It's a nice throwback to classic theater that way. Love this movie, no matter what people say!
I've only seen this film twice. Once in the theater and the second time with friends, only one besides me who had read the novel. The friends who hadn't read the novel were utterly confused throughout most of it, especially at the beginning, because there really isn't a lot of character development. To honestly appreciate this film, make sure you read the book. It opens up so many doors to understanding it. Overall, a brilliant adaptation, however. Joe Wright is a wonderful director, and Seamus McGarvey's cinematography was stunning. But my absolute favorite part was the pairing of typewriter keys in the music, and Dario Marianelli's Oscar was well deserved.
