This is a very disappointing movie and barely touches on the complexity of how Whitney ended up such a tragic figure. The writer and director couldn't seem to figure out how to tell multiple stories, and the movie ends up choppy. Each of Whitney's relationships were complex and this movie didn't portray how all of the relationships intertwined to lead to the downfall of Whitney. The movie is sanitized, boring and hard to follow, unless you already know Whitney's history. I gave it 4 stars for the music, Stanley Tucci and out of respect for Whitney. Your time is better spent watching a documentary about the life of Whitney Houston.
No spoilers here. I like Jason Segel and saw the ad for the show on Freeform, so I thought I'd try it. The concept is unique and really interesting. The acting is excellent and a quite varied cast. As with all science fiction, there are some inconsistencies, but none worth noting...if you don't see them, don't worry. It's both upbeat and down, but the little gloomier moments seem to be leading to hopeful places. Just sit back and enjoy.
I have read some of the reviews that have trashed this movies, and I'm guessing they are written by men. While the movie is not perfect, the story is actually based on true events and to dismiss a persons very real-life trials, including traumatic events such as rape and absent parents, shows whoever wrote these reviews has no idea what the real world is about. As a movie, it could have been a little more consistent in the time lines and explaining how she got to the point of desparation, but overall, this story is worth listening too. Angie Wang did an excellent job of directing overall and making the viewer understand from where she comes. This is not a "drug movie," it is a movie about a poor minority who must do bad things to achieve what the more fortunate have. It shows that regardless of where you come, to wit, her roommate, a white, priveledged female, everyone has problems.
I have to admit I have not been keeping current on movies that are not in the news. But when I saw this movie on Amazon Prime and the actors, all of which I love, I watched the movie. I figured it would be good, at least above-average, given the reviews , but I was completely and pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this movie. Without giving too much away. It is a unique take on a classic story of a washed up rocker but has so many other facets, dealing with all of the characters and their flaws and life choices. I highly recommend this movie not only for those who like these actors, like movies about redemption or even dealing with the past, it is just a good movie plain and simple.
I read some of the reviews posted, and I'm surprised by the low opinion some people had about the quality of the acting, the story, and the overall direction. I think the movie was pretty good, mostly because it rings true to me. I think I liked the movie, in part, because I found it to be comically (or tragically) true. Fundamentalists going to any length to protect their beliefs. Isn't that what we see every day in the new? Though admittedly, the news does not have the comic edge of this movie. Greg Kinnear is an excellent actor, and did a great job making it as comical as possible to be at the receiving end of the ire of a group of crazies who will go to any length to protect their radical views. Marisa Tomeii is excellent as the still-hippie friend, who helps Kinnear keep his sanity. Pierce Brosnan is great to hate and the rest of the case was very believable
This was actually quite good. I didn't expect too much before tuning in. Tony Rock plays a comedian who had made it big, but had lost it all because of his addiction. The movie is filmed as a documentary of a washed-up comedian making his comeback. The acting is good and the movie contains cameos by a lot of stars. The story is so common is it hard not to believe. It is not a laugh-out-loud comedy, but more of a movie about comics. Though the story itself if pretty predictable, hence the being true-to-life, it is still entertaining. I thought Tony Rock did a great job and all the supporting actors were as good, if not better. I wouldn't say this is an Oscar-worthy movie, but if you are looking for good acting with a good story and you like this genre, the movie is worth your time.
The documentary follows several families that deal with the foster care system. The movie looks at how the system affects not only the children, but the offenders, the survivors, the recovered, the extended family, and those who are simply trying to help, from the recently divorced mother who becomes a foster care parent the the police woman who must act as a social worker to ensure the safety of all. The documentary is not slow moving at all. No particular message is preached, and it is not just a tale of a few families, but a message about the whole foster care system. I found the documentary very moving, well-written, and sensitive tot he plights of all involved.
