  • Boy meets dog, boy protects dog

I really liked this movie. It was believable, and the message about standing up for what's right is always worth repeating. No special effects or explosions, just a simple, poignant story told in straightforward fashion.

Marty, a boy of about 13 who lives in the country with his family, one day discovers Shiloh, a puppy who has run away. It turns out that Shiloh belongs to an ornery hunter named Judd who lives nearby. Judd only sees Shiloh as a tool for hunting and doesn't believe animals have any rights. For Marty, however, Shiloh quickly becomes a friend and companion.

The story unfolds around the struggle between Marty and Judd for ownership of Shiloh. That may sound a little corny, but issues of family, honesty, respect for other species and the importance of keeping promises soon become involved.

As an animal lover I found the story compelling and I'm going to watch it again soon with my grandchildren.

  • I liked it a lot

I realize the horse who played Ruffian probably doesn't look like her and that Claiborne Farms is a very upscale operation. To me, however, the story is about heart, both in humans and horses, and how that binds them together and makes them great. In my opinion, Sam Shepard did a great job as Frank Whitely. I don't know enough about horse racing to pick out all the little factual flaws but to me this is a really inspiring story. The scenes are beautiful. It also captures the feel of the 1970s, at least as I remember them. The scenes where Ruffian broke down are really tragic, and it was also sad to see her in the hospital trying to recover. I liked the supporting cast quite a lot, too. To the limited extent I've been around horses, they seemed like horse people and the kind of folks who really love horses. I would recommend this movie to anyone.

  • A gripping thriller with some interesting plot twists

I haven't seen this movie in about 40 years but it scared the daylights out of me as a kid. To me Robert Young was Jim Anderson, the exemplary dad of Father Knows Best. So it was really disturbing to see him captured by enemy agents and tortured. I don't remember what they did to him but it was terrible. It seems like they smashed his fingers with pliers. Another cool aspect of this movie is the way Robert Young was able to remember the way to the enemy agents' hideout by sound, even though he was taken there blindfolded. To this day I try to listen to what things sound like whenever I am traveling some place, in case I have to go back there again.

This movie also has an excellent visual texture to it -- shot in black and white with terrific use of shadows, sinister bad guys in dark clothing, bulky old cars.
