Edginess was Steven McQueen's prime quality - and it dominates this film - which saw his star rising - while wholesome Robert Wagner's star was dimming - who do you think got the top billing - who do you think got the girl - played by prim & lovely Shirley Anne Field
this film is as much about the clashing personalities as the war - tho there's enuf WWII bomber action - done with with such gritty realism - i could almost smell the rain and leather jackets
i was especially impressed with the recreation of the WWII era - in costume and British atmosphere - this was in part accomplished by english director Phillip Leacock - who was lived there at the time.

Tedious - over-used psychic mystery plot - this time - a protagonist on his first trip to Tahiti - encounters people who recognize him from a previous visit - they even resent him - one guy punching him - the hotel demanding payment from his "previous visit" - and ultimately he discovers an earlier romance - all of which occurred when he was in the US in a coma after a minor surgery - - the script barely sketched out the story - and the actors seemed like they were in rehearsals instead of a final take - the lead actor was so boring that the coma may have happened in his reality - and he never came out - even the location shooting in Tahiti didn't help since it's in black & white.
Predictable and drab - except for the young actress
this is a horror-less horror story based on the real life horror of a wwii japanese medical lab that used foreign subjects for cruel experiments - a la nazi medical experimentation - you've seen the plot before - so the resolution will come as no surprise
what makes this special and worth watching is the lead actress playing a chinese woman - she's korean actress Kim Yoo Jeong - Yoo Jeong started out as a child actress and has grown into a beauty - she has a genuine talent for acting - and a strong screen presence - plus here she is given a chance to demonstrate her english speaking skills.
