Unpacking the Lie in Your lie in April: An Act of Love or Deception?
Image
There’s something about Your lie in April that makes it impossible to watch just once. Maybe it’s the aching piano solos, maybe it’s the gorgeous blossoms swirling through melancholy spring skies, or maybe it’s the way love and loss are composed like an unforgettable, bittersweet duet performance! I recently rewatched the entire series after not having seen it since around the time it first came out, expecting a tearjerker and getting something far more introspective: a story about music, memory, and whether love has to be truthful to be real. For the purpose of reaching both newcomers to the anime and those who have seen Your lie in April, this post is split into two parts: the first half offering a spoiler-free look at why this anime is worth your time. But in the second half, I’ll be diving headfirst into the emotional climax of...

10 Romance Anime Better Than ‘Fruits Basket’
Image
The romance genre in anime offers us some of the most nuanced human stories people have ever witnessed. But, out of all, there’s this one particular series that many fans would put easily on top of the rest; and that is none other than Fruits Basket. Tohru’s melancholic journey exploring themes of love, trauma, and acceptance has truly captured everyone’s hearts.

But honestly, when it comes to the romance genre, anime covers a vast range of stories and themes, offering something for everyone. While one can argue that Fruits Basket delivers a narratively more compelling storyline than the rest, you might find some other gems in this article that may even suit your own understanding of love.

1. Skip and Loafer

Tired of the same old tropey romance anime? Then you might want to give Skip and Loafer a chance. Although the premise may sound quite generic at first,...

The 2025 Anime of the Year’s Upcoming Season Might Be Getting Canceled
Image
Solo Leveling's future remains uncertain as its production studio, A-1 Pictures, has received some bad news. According to the latest financial reports for the previous fiscal year, the company has reportedly incurred a loss in the millions. This left many to wonder how the studio landed on the red, despite the numerous success Solo Leveling received this year.

According to the published financial report posted on GameBiz, A-1 Pictures showed a net loss of 178 million yen (~ $1.2 million Usd). It also published a performance trend, which revealed that the studio had been performing well since 2014. However, by 2025, there was a significant decline, making this year the studio's biggest loss in nearly ten years. It's essential to note that A-1 Pictures falls under the Aniplex umbrella, a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation and one of the largest Japanese entertainment companies. So, while a $1.2 million net loss may look bad, it shouldn't affect...

While anime series centering around idols, or even demon hunting, is nothing new, crafting a story combining the two, especially with equal amounts of focus on cutting-edge animation, storyline, and catchy songs, are what made the movie so successful.

Moreover, it also gave viewers a glimpse into just how entertaining musical anime can be. So, for those wanting to explore more of the genre, there are five musical anime series that will not only satisfy their craving but will also expose them to just how much more the genre has to offer.

Not Even ‘Your Lie in April’ Can Surpass This Studio Ghibli Masterpiece as the Saddest Anime Ever
Image
If someone tells you that Your Lie in April is the saddest anime ever, and you agree, is it because you have never watched Grave of the Fireflies, or you simply don’t want to mention or revisit it ever again! It would be completely understandable if you belong to the second category. Isao Takahata captured the saddest aspect of war in the most realistic way possible with Grave of the Fireflies.

Your Lie in April is undoubtedly heartbreaking and sad, but it doesn’t come close to the horrors of Grave of the Fireflies. Realism is the reason why that is the case. Your Lie in April explores many elements and a wide range of emotions, whereas Grave of the Fireflies is just pure suffering, and it gets unbearable very quickly.

5 Anime With Stories So Good You'll Never Read a Book Again
Image
For many, there will never be a better way to experience a story than reading a book. There's something that happens on such a personal level that moves the reader and invites them and only them to explore the world within the pages. There's another way, however, that can be just as personal and contemplative. Despite it being an audiovisual medium, stories in anime are rarely ever explored in the same way that live-action films and series do.

Unlike books, anime can engage with multiple senses at once. Anime's vivid animation turns every frame into a work of art, and superb voice acting powerfully brings complex character arcs to life. The best anime don't just tell a story; they make the viewer fully experience it. While there are plenty of anime releases every year, there are bound to be some that are worse than others. The best of the best,...

Japan's Biggest Anime Outlet Ranks Its Top 5 Anime of All Time to Make You Cry

Animate Times -- a news outlet run by Japan's largest anime and manga retailer, Animate -- has unveiled its top five picks for the most tear-jerking anime of all time. Modern classics largely lead the charge, with the list populated by favorites from the 2010s.

The list includes the well-known shows Your Lie in April (the beloved adaptation of Naoshi Arakawa's manga) and the 2018 hit series A Place Further than the Universe. Also featured in the lineup are Violet Evergarden, Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day and Angel Beats!, with each relatively recent anime best known for serving pensive explorations of grief and friendship. The music genre is one of the most unexplored themes in the anime and manga industry. There are only a few projects that intensely focus on music as a central theme. One of them is Your Lie in April, created by Naodhi Arakawa, who initially earned his fame after creating a sports manga called Sayonara, Football.

Your Lie in April follows the story of a young prodigy, Kosei Arima, who is an excellent pianist. However, the tragedy of his mother dying drove him to a mental breakdown that led to him never being able to hear the sound of his piano playing. Later on, he meets Kaori Miyazono, a violinist who helps him with his skills and gets him back on track.

When Your Lie in April first came out, fans were shocked to see Arakawa’s transition from the sports genre to the music genre.

“I’m not interested in drawing girls”: Masashi Kishimoto Needs to Hear Naoshi Arakawa’s Explanation for Not Making Stereotypical Anime Girls
Image
The anime industry and its writers are notorious for making female characters a stereotype of themselves. From being hyper-feminine to exclusively for the sake of fan service, they aren’t treated right and this is most noticed in Masashi Kishimoto’s writing in Naruto. The severe hate for Sakura Haruno and how underwhelming the arcs for other female characters, like Tsunade, end up becoming is historical.

There are, however, mangaka out there who portray women with respect and don’t see them as objects. Naoshi Arakawa, the creator of Your Lie In April, has this exact sentiment. His female main characters in Your Lie In April were flawed but had their own personalities and storylines. Kaori, especially, was the driving force of the overall plot and Kousei Arima’s healing. In Naruto, however, it seems the girls are cursed to stay stuck in shonen limbo.

What is I Want To Eat Your Pancreas about?
Image
The following contains spoilers for I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.

I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is a beloved romantic drama anime movie that explores themes of grief, friendship, and the value of life. Compared to other similar anime series like Your Lie in April or A Silent Voice, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas may feel more basic in its storytelling and lacks a unique angle to make it stand out. Despite its odd name, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas is a beloved romantic drama tale that many anime fans hold in high regard. 10 Live-Action Anime Adaptations Hollywood Needs To Make
Image
Anime adaptations can be successful in live-action if treated well, as seen with Alita: Battle Angel, but skepticism still surrounds the intersection of the two mediums. Several captivating anime, such as Your Lie In April and Terror In Resonance, have the potential for brilliant live-action adaptations due to their compelling storylines and themes. Mecha anime like Gurren Lagann and period fantasy dramas like Berserk offer unique worlds and characters that could thrive in the live-action medium, appealing to a wide range of audiences.

With a good deal of anime like One Piece and Cowboy Bebop getting live-action adaptations, it is hard not to speculate which ones deserve to be reimagined in the live-action medium next. The intersection between anime and live-action in recent years has sparked several debates on whether the Japanese audiovisual animated medium of storytelling can leap onto the silver screen in live-action form. 10 Romance Anime Characters Who Deserved a Second Chance at Love

Many romance series in anime give the best characters their well-deserved happily ever after. Finding true love and forming a strong, healthy relationship with a dream partner is the goal, and most romance anime protagonists accomplish it by the end. However, other characters in these romance anime series aren't so fortunate, and true love slips between their fingers.

For one reason or another, these wonderful romance anime characters couldn't ride off into the sunset with their beloved, even if they are good people who deserved that kind of happy ending. Some of these characters failed to form a loving relationship at all, while others had a relationship but couldn't make it last. Despite these failings—or perhaps because of them—many heartbroken anime characters deserve another shot at finding love.

Why Your Lie in April Is Often Mistaken for Being a Shojo Anime & Manga
Image
Most onlookers of anime believe they know what to expect from shonen stories. There's an expectation of action, adventure and comedy more so than in the other major demographics, but this is not the original intent of the label. Shonen is merely one of multiple demographics to narrow down marketing and target viewership, and for shonen titles, the end goal is to reach the hearts of teenage boys. While there have been decades of shonen series that appeared to utilize the same genres, tropes and sentiments, at least one is something of an anomaly.

Originally published in Monthly Shonen Magazine as a manga in 2011, Your Lie in April captivated its readers with stirring romance and tear-jerking drama. The heavily emotional story was eventually adapted into an anime in the fall of 2014, and in time, it became one of the most popular and widely acclaimed series among men and women alike.

Updated on May 23, 2023 by Ajay Aravind: Your Lie in April is a masterful take on human relationships, one that involves as much joy as heartbreak.

Your Lie in April Remains Among the Best Sad Anime
Image
As another April comes and goes, Your Lie in April remains one of the most popular romantic comedy anime almost nine years after its premiere. It's difficult to even classify this series as a typical rom-com due to how tied it is to its central tragedy, also known as one of the great tearjerkers in anime history.

While plenty of anime are made with the intention of emotionally impacting the viewer and even making them cry, Your Lie in April seems to have struck a certain chord with many in the community. First-time viewers of the series constantly post on Reddit or Twitter in search of an outlet to express their sincerest emotions after surviving the show's ending. Just what about the stories of Kousei Arima, Kaori Miyazono and the rest of the cast have made it such an emotionally resonant and memorable sad anime that still reels people in after all these years?...

Review: One-Punch Man Gets a Magic Twist in New Crunchyroll Anime, Mashle
Image
The first episode of the One-Punch Man meets magic series Mashle: Magic and Muscles has aired on Crunchyroll. The fantasy shōnen series follows the titular hero, Mash Burnedead, who is "unmarked" in a world full of marked wizards. The anime's premiere episode is very faithful to the original manga's first chapter, strengthening some emotional moments and lightly tweaking some humorous aspects.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles began as a manga series of the same name created by Hajime Kōmoto. It began serializing in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 2020. The series is ongoing and presently spans sixteen volumes. This anime adaptation comes from A-1 Pictures, which is known for producing other anime series including Black Butler, Fairy Tail, Blue Exorcist, Your Lie in April, Sword Art Online, and Lycoris Recoil, among others. Mashle: Magic and Muscles is directed by Tomoya Tanaka, with a script by Yōsuke Kuroda, and character designs by Hisashi Toshima.

10 Anime That Focus On Classical Music
Image
Anime and music have long gone hand-in-hand, with even the biggest series like My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan defined by their unforgettable soundtracks, but great series about classical music can be harder to spot. Aside from the very popular series Your Lie in April, which is considered to be one of the greatest anime of all time, anime that celebrates classical music is rarely talked about enough.

Luckily, that doesn't mean there's any shortage. With recent series like Forest of Piano and Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life only adding to the list of high-quality anime series with a focus on the beauty of classical music, it's a good time to be a fan.

Your Lie In April (2014-2015) Available On Hulu

Classical music is a fairly niche interest, so it takes something special for a series focused on it to become extremely popular. Luckily, Your Lie in April...

God of War Ragnarök: 10 Actors You Didn't Know Were In The Game & Where You Know Them From
Image
God of War Ragnarök has been performing admirably as it sells more games than any other first-party game. It also is one of the nominees for Game of the Year, as well as the game with the most nominations out of all the categories.

God of War Ragnarök uses a motion capture that uses real actors for many of the cutscenes in the games. There are many notable actors and voice actors that appear in the games that players will likely have seen in previous movies, shows, or other video games. However, it can be difficult to place just who these actors are at first.

Sunny Suljic — The Killing Of The Sacred Deer

Sunny Suljic is of course best known for his role as Atreus in God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök. He hasn't had many major roles in movies or television and for video games, he's stuck...

Your Lie In April: The 10 Best Quotes, Ranked
Your Lie in April (2014)
When anime fans think of romance, they likely think of the more comedic shows with one misunderstanding after another keeping the main couple apart until the very end. Your Lie In April is a romance, but it's not the typical one. It leans more into the drama than the comedy as it explores Kosei Arima's grief and guilt over the loss of his mother through music - and through him falling for a fellow musician.

Along the way, Kosei and his friends learn a lot about what falling in love is really like, and they have a lot of surprising pieces of wisdom to show for it. Of course, there are also wise words about music in the anime. These words make up some of the best quotes in Your Lie In April.

'The Space Between Us': Get Ready For a New Killer Martian Movie
Last year, the world had a hell of a time cheering for Matt Damon to get home from Mars in the Ridley Scott film, The Martian. Now, it's time to get ready for a different type of Martian flick, one that's not as based on human ingenuity as it is based on human emotion.

The Space Between Us poses many questions, though the chief among them is largely a sociological and developmental one: what would happen if a boy grew up on Mars and came back to Earth as a teenager?

Check out the official trailer for The Space Between Us below!

"In this interplanetary adventure, a space shuttle embarks on the first mission to colonize Mars, only to discover after takeoff that one of the astronauts is pregnant. Shortly after landing, she dies from complications while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet – never revealing who the father is.

Listen to the Chilling Audio That Inspired 'The Conjuring 2'
Horror movies can be scary enough as they are. Just the ideas planted in the minds of viewers is often enough to get the imagination going. However, it's always a bit more scary when you know that the film is based on true events. This is especially true of the Conjuring films, which are based on the actual cases of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

As such, the studio has a unique opportunity in that they have actual files and recordings from the incidents they are drawing from. They took advantage, and thrown together a bit of audio recording from the events chronicled in the upcoming film, The Conjuring 2

Check out the recording below!

"Director James Wan brings this supernatural thriller to the screen with another real case from the files of renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren.. Reprising their roles, Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson...

Wesley Snipes Comments on Possibility of More 'Blade'
While much is being said about Black Panther and how great it is to see a black character leading a superhero film, we can't forget that Wesley Snipes trail-blazed this territory with the Blade trilogy way back in the late 90s and early 2000s. Sure, comic book movies may not have been the cash cows they are now, but it was certainly great for its time.

Since Blade's introduction to the big screen, it's had two sequels (Blade II and Blade: Trinity) and a single season of a Spike TV series (which, interestingly enough was created by David S. Goyer and Geoff Johns). As good of a run the character made in its on-screen iterations, they were iterations that occurred before the current golden age of superhero movies we live in now.

Recently, there have been rumors of Blade making a return with a Netflix original series, á la Daredevil,...

Bryan Singer On Not Directing 'X-men: The Last Stand': "It Was Probably My Responsibility To Do That...and I Didn't'
The X-men franchise certainly got off to a pretty strong start. The first movie was understandably mainstream in its appeal, with a great focus on the mutant struggle. The second one amped things up, adding more credibility to the comic book movie genre as a whole. To some, X-2: X-men United holds up as one of the superior entries in the franchise. The decline in quality didn't come until X-men: The Last Stand, the third film in the franchise.

Unlike the first two movies, The Last Stand wasn't directed by Bryan Singer. Singer instead left the X-men to tackle Superman Returns, another picture that seemed to underwhelm the target fan base. The film was rushed to completion, with director Brett Ratner brought on board to helm the picture, and the results were a bit messy, to say the least. Ever since then, fans have always been left to wonder:...

Karl Urban Talks 'Thor: Ragnarok'
Last Friday, it was announced that Karl Urban would be making their way over the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form of the Marvel baddie Skurge the Executioner. While Urban is no stranger to genre films (he tore up the screen in Dredd, and a trailer just came out for his latest film, Star Trek Beyond), there is something a bit interesting about him making his way over to the superhero film genre.

In a recent interview with IGN, the actor explained how he got involved with Marvel and ended up in the film, and also gave us an oh-so-minor comments on the character he will be playing.

“I read a fantastic script that was action-packed and full of great characters. When I heard who was involved -- and the cast list dropped yesterday -- and [saw] the opportunity to work with [Thor: Ragnarok director] Taika Waititi, who I think is one of the most brilliant directors coming through,...

'Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates': Adam Devine and Zac Efron Read Nsfw Children's Book
Fun fact: today is Brother's Day (which I'm sure is a real holiday), and as such, the marketing folks over at Fox have thought it the perfect occasion to celebrate with a video from actors Adam Devin and Zac Efron. In the video, the pair, who play the Stangle brothers in the upcoming Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates.

The book they read from is a "children's" book entitled "Where Do Brothers Come From?"

In case you haven't had your fill of Zac Efron and his comedic chops with last weekend's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, don't you worry, his abs and biceps will be eagerly waiting you in Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates.

The film follows two brothers, Mike and Dave Stangle, who need to get classy wedding dates for their sister's wedding, in hopes that they'll rein them in from usual party-heavy shenanigans. The only problem is the...

New 'Sing' Trailer Has a Lot of Heart
There is a definite trend in the marketing of animated films. First they tend to have a trailer that gives very little away in terms of plot, character, or motivations, and focuses solely on the jokes meant to get kids in the theaters. Earlier this year, with the release of the first Sing trailer, that's exactly what we got. A bunch of one-off jokes and pop culture references. Given the trend, I'm usually not one to judge so harshly early on. It's usually the second trailer that has more weight to it.

This is exactly the case with Sing. With its second trailer, we get into the motivations of the characters, and the struggles they face. While the jokes from the first trailer are mostly here, this particular trailer does a much better job at getting me to care about what's going on, and given that, I certainly hope the film delivers on that front.

Don't Expect a "Rogue Cut" Equivalent From 'X-men: Apocalypse'
The filmmaking process is an unpredictable and malleable one. A director may have a vision, but at the end of the day, that vision may interfere with the actual story they're trying to tell. As such, there are often times when either full scenes or even subplots are left on the cutting room floor. We seemed to have witnessed that pretty recently with this year's Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which had its original cut of over three hours reduced to two and a half hours, but perhaps one of the best examples in the past few years comes from 2014's X-men: Days Of Future Past.

In that film, the entire subplot of Rogue was unceremoniously axed from the theatrical version. All in all, the movie worked, but it did seem a bit strange to see a character that had once been so prominent reduced to a few lines and appearances.
