The genius of this special is that it seems like he has not been at this a long time, so you let your guard down ... The, BOOM! A vicious rib-hit of comedy! History will hopefully remember this as a great special. I mean, dude had imaginary friend puppets as a callback to his best day of his life, reminding you of a tight act. Bravo! I loved it and I was entertained as could be! I realize that perhaps I'm just a simple guy, but I've seen great standup and loved it. I know bad standup. This is so refreshing - yes, refreshing! The puppets got me. I also want to look up his mom! Superb special by HBO! I'll pay for more.
This was like a person deciding to do his first open mic night at a comedy show because of the pressure of his friends to get up there and give it a try. It fails miserably. Not a single funny moment throughout the entire hour. It just dragged on, while I waited for a good moment to arrive. The jokes were unoriginal. There was nothing creative or unique about it. Just a British guy pointing out the strange aspects of America, throw in a few self deprecating reflections, add a little sex, loop back around to a recurring theme that gets you minimal laughs. There are so many good, original, hilarious comics out there. This is undeniably not one of them.
This is so unfunny, I am at a loss for words to describe how awful it is. How this act becomes an HBO special is completely beyond me. I did not even chuckle even a little, not even once. I really enjoyed Brett Goldstein in "Ted Lasso," so this is not a condemnation of him. He should stick to acting.
There's a specific kind of relief that comes from a stand-up special that knows exactly what it is and never pretends to be anything else. Brett Goldstein: The Second Best Night of Your Life is laugh-out-loud funny, knowingly crude, and surprisingly warm beneath all the profanity. As a first filmed special, it's an impressive and confident debut that plays right to Goldstein's strengths.
Goldstein leans fully into the persona audiences have come to love - the blunt, perpetually exasperated truth-teller with a wicked grin and zero interest in politeness. His delivery is sharp and rhythmically precise, allowing even the dirtiest jokes to land with intelligence rather than shock for shock's sake. What makes the special work so well is that the vulgarity is paired with self-awareness; Goldstein understands the absurdity of his thoughts and invites the audience into that shared recognition.
The material itself feels personal without becoming indulgent. Stories about relationships, insecurity, masculinity, and the mildly horrifying chaos of being human are told with a looseness that feels conversational, yet clearly honed through repetition and craft. There's an infectious confidence in the way Goldstein commands the stage - relaxed, unforced, and fully comfortable letting a joke breathe if it needs to. What stood out most is how much fun this special clearly is. Goldstein enjoys the audience, enjoys the material, and enjoys pushing right up to the edge without tipping over into mean-spiritedness. Even when the jokes get aggressive, there's an underlying warmth that keeps the crowd on his side.
The Second Best Night of Your Life is exactly what a stand-up special should be: unapologetically funny, sharply written, and performed with total commitment. For a first recorded special, it's a knockout - and a strong signal that Brett Goldstein belongs very comfortably on this stage.

The special was delightful! My husband and I laughed out loud repeatedly. We truly enjoyed it. Lots of great topics covered in a funny way. I went into this thinking, "Man, Brett seems like a guy I could have a beer with" and I still feel that way afterwards. Loved him in Ted Lasso and Shrinking, loved him in this.
