Neon to Release Takashi Miike’s Next Film ‘Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo’
Image
Who would’ve thought “Bad Lieutenant” would become a quasi-franchise? We’re guessing not Abel Ferrara, but after Werner Herzog did his own version, the “franchise” is continuing with yet another unlikely auteur taking on the themes of the original neo-noir film: Japanese master Takashi Miike.

Miike’s next film is “Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo,” and shortly after the film was reported as a hot package due to hit the Cannes market, Neon announced on Wednesday evening that it was boarding the film with plans to both release it theatrically in North America as well as represent the sales rights at Cannes internationally.

“Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo” will star Shun Oguri (“Godzilla v. Kong”) and Lily James (“Pam and Tommy”), as well as WWE star Liv Morgan joining the cast. The film follows the Bad Lieutenant (Oguri), a corrupt gambler in the Metropolitan Police Force, who finds himself thrown into a tangled...

Asian Film Awards Rising Star Winner Koki Talks Global Film Career Path, International Co-Productions
Image
Japanese actor Koki is swiftly building an international profile that spans continents and genres, from dual roles in a Japanese horror film to sword fighting in 18th century Britain.

The model-turned-musician-turned-actor recently added the Asian Film Awards Rising Star Award to her growing resume, marking her first recognition outside her home country as she prepares to announce a new project based in Hong Kong.

“It means so much to be able to receive an award outside Japan,” Koki tells Variety. “The Rising Star Award gives me so much courage and recognition. I feel like I want to do my all my best to be able to go up to the award.”

The daughter of Japanese entertainment royalty — her father is megastar Takuya Kimura (“Grand Maison Paris”) and her mother is singer Kudo Shizuka — Koki has been carving her own path since showing musical talent at age 7, composing hit songs for...

Guranmezon Tokyo (2019)
Series Reviews: La Grande Maison Tokyo (2019) by Ayuko Tsukahara, Daisuke Yamamuro, Takahiro Aoyama
Guranmezon Tokyo (2019)
Japanese television series “La Grande Maison Tokyo” aired on TBS Television in the “Sunday Theater” slot, from October to December 2019. Following its success, high viewer ratings, and several TV awards, the series has spawned a few sequels; a special television episode in 2024, “La Grande Maison Tokyo Special”, depicting the restaurant’s aftermath following the Covid-19 pandemic, and – soon after – the feature film “La Grande Maison Paris” produced by TBS Sparkle and distributed by Toho and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan, and released at the end of 2024. Moreover, one of the original series’ characters, Chef Shohei Hirako, has his own spinoff series.

In 2015, Japanese chef Natsuki Obana (Takuya Kimura) was running the prestigious Michelin-starred restaurant Escoffille in Paris when his life was turned upside down by an accident. During an important lunch for the Japan-France summit, an allergenic ingredient slipped through unnoticed in the kitchen and ended up in the sea urchin starter for the VIPs,...
