Nicole Kidman in Holland (2025)

A Forgotten Pierce Brosnan And Salma Hayek Flop Is Killing It On Netflix
Image
There aren't any filmmakers who want their movies to lose money and fade into obscurity, so it's probably comforting to know that the streaming era can give flops a new lease of life. Recently, John Cena and Alison Brie's "Freelance" soared to the top of Netflix's charts — two years after it bombed at the box office and got put on blast by critics. Similarly, Nicole Kidman's "Holland" has been killing it on Prime, despite being embraced with predominant negativity upon release.

What's more, some forgotten blasts from the past are also resonating with modern audiences. According to FlixPatrol, Brett Ratner's "After the Sunset" — a heist comedy starring Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek released in 2024 — has crept into Netflix's top 10 on August 5, sitting alongside some of the streaming service's original hits like "Happy Gilmore 2" and the animated gem "K-Pop Demon Hunters."

In the movie, Brosnan and...

‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Brings Back a Notable Franchise Villain and Adds Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk
Image
The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shaping up to be a big deal, with Tom Holland back as Peter Parker and some exciting names joining him. Mark Ruffalo is set to return as Bruce Banner, the Hulk, 14 years after his MCU debut in The Avengers, according to production updates.

Rumors about Ruffalo’s role had been floating around, but things only locked in once the script was finalized and filming kicked off this month in England. Also, Michael Mando is coming back as the villain Scorpion, a role he first played in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, per casting reports.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the fourth film in the MCU’s Spider-Man series, following Spider-Man: No Way Home from 2021. It’s a joint project between Columbia Pictures, Marvel Studios, and Sony Pictures Releasing, and it’s the 38th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing, with...

Tom Holland Weighs in on James Bond Speculation: “It’s the Pinnacle of Working in Our Industry”
Image
Tom Holland is weighing in on the speculation that he could potentially nab the next 007 role.

While it’s not yet been announced who the new James Bond will be in Amazon MGM Studios’ future film, which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve (the Dune films) and written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), there are several actors who’ve been rumored as possibilities to play the secret agent — one of which is Holland.

When speaking recently with Gordon Ramsay, the Spider-Man star was asked about the Bond rumors. “Listen, there’s speculation at the moment. We’ll keep it to a minimum for now. We’ll get there one day,” he responded with a smile.

The chef then took a moment to seriously ask Holland, “Can you imagine what’s going to happen to your life if you do? First of all, you’d love that opportunity, right?”

And The...

‘Practical Magic 2’ Is Bringing Back Everyone’s Favorite Aunts for More Midnight Margaritas
Image
The sequel to Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman’s 26% Rotten Tomatoes fan favorite comedy just got some major reinforcements to its ensemble. Deadline reports that Lee Pace (Foundation), Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), and Solly McLeod (The Dead Don’t Hurt) have all joined the cast of Practical Magic 2, which is eyeing a September 18, 2026, release date. The report also dropped the bomb that Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing are also due to reprise their roles as Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances, respectively. It was reported earlier this year that Joey King (A Family Affair) had also joined the cast of Practical Magic 2. Production on the sequel has officially begun, which should give the crew plenty of time to ensure it hits its fall release date.

Although not particularly well-received by critics upon release — the 26% Rotten Tomatoes score is evidence of that — Practical Magic has become...

As previously announced, Arden Myrin also stars in the six-episode series, along with newcomers Ava Ryan and Lilou Lang, with Mandell Maughan aboard in a recurring role. Image
It looks like Tom Holland's new Spider-Man movie will be taking some pointers from Robert Pattinson's The Batman when it begins filming. To avoid shooting in New York City, the movie will be shot in Scotland.

Production crews will be in the city center to shoot scenes forSpider-Man: Brand New Day, with Tom Holland reprising his role as Peter Parker/ Spider-Man. Rihanna's Disastrous Sci-Fi Movie Flop Is Finally Finding An Audience On Prime Video
Image
The proliferation of streaming services means that audiences are constantly bombarded with things to watch, and it's easy for individual movies to get lost in the fray. Yet, every once in a while, a film that might very well have faded into obscurity before the streaming era manages to secure a new lease on life when it hits, say, Prime Video.

Time and time again, Amazon's streaming platform has proved itself to be a golden opportunity for movies that failed at the box office. Prime Video helped Gareth Edwards' ambitious 2023 sci-fi movie "The Creator" find an audience, but it has also benefitted films that are, for want of a more polite phrasing, pretty bad. Ryan Reynolds' worst-reviewed movie became a Prime Video hit 12 years after its release, after all -- and Nicole Kidman's 2025 critical flop "Holland" did the same immediately after it hit streaming platform.

Now, singer Rihanna's first major blockbuster movie,...

Andrew Garfield Reveals His Caveats to Play Spider-Man Again
Image
Andrew Garfield is opening about playing Spider-Man again.

The 41-year-old played the superhero in two of his own standalone movies, and reprised his version in the most recent, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

During a recent Comic Con stop in Abu Dhabi, Andrew opened up about portraying the web-slinging Marvel character and what it would take for him to do it again.

Keep reading to find out more…

“I would love to play the character again in some capacity, but I think it would have to be very weird. I would want to do something very strange. I would want to do something very unique and offbeat and surprising,” he shared, via Et bel Arabi. “Kind of like the creative freedom they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies.”

Andrew previously mentioned why he thought he would never be cast as Spider-Man, and in October 2024, he dished why reprising his version was healing in No Way Home.

A Nicole Kidman Thriller Is Killing It On Prime Video After Flopping With Critics
Image
"Holland," a thriller starring Nicole Kidman and Matthew Macfadyen, first premiered at the South by Southwest film festival in early March. I was there for its second screening at the festival and had a great time, but apparently I was the odd one out: the movie has a 23% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a solid 37% below what it needed to be certified fresh. When it was released on Prime Video on March 27, audiences didn't seem to like it either. It has a 24% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 5.0 out of 10 rating on IMDb. The low rating is baffling to me because "The Astronaut," which is the actual worst movie at the festival, is somehow beating it with its 45% Rt score.

Despite all that, Prime Video subscribers are watching "Holland" in droves. It's currently the #2 most-viewed movie of the week on the platform, right behind the hit 2024 blockbuster "Twisters.

Jason Statham's 'A Working Man' Is the Best Movie To Watch This Weekend
Image
Fan favorite Jason Statham is almost always guaranteed to get seats in the theaters despite his movies often being at odds with critics. This trend will likely continue with A Working Man landing in theaters this weekend. It offers an action-packed tale of an ex-operative turned blue-collar worker tasked with saving his boss's daughter. Moreover, it reunites David Ayer with Jason Statham after their success in The Beekeeper, which should have fans of the previous hit hyped up going into the theaters this weekend.

Can't make it out to the theaters, or not interested in action? Streaming also offers a few treats this weekend, including the Oscar-nominated Queer finally making its way to Max and the Nicole Kidman-led mystery thriller Holland landing on Prime Video. Netflix is also set to share some love with The Life List. For horror fans, The Woman in the Yard lands in theaters, and...

‘Holland’ Ending Explained & Theories: Is Dave Dead Or Alive?
Image
In Holland’s ending, both Dave and Nancy raised the same question, “Was it even real?” The opening and end credits of the film were eerily similar, except for the fact Fred Vandergroot, Nancy’s husband, disappeared from her life. [Spoiler Alert] Yes, Nancy killed him… smashed his head in and blew his brains out with the white clog, which was a part of their traditional folk dances. This footwear could symbolize the shiny shackles that Fred and men like him had put on the women of the town to turn them into their prisoners, only they weren’t really aware of the true nature of their imprisonment. The miniature diorama in Fred’s home explored the recurring themes of the film, i.e., individual freedom and gender roles, similar to Ibsen’s play “A Doll’s House.” But the question that still lingers at the end is, did Nancy really find a way out,...

'Holland' Review: Nicole Kidman's Latest Is a Stylish Disappointment
Image
Nicole Kidman once led a modern-day reboot of The Stepford Wives, certain generations might recall. Two decades later, the busy Oscar winner is starring in yet another edgy thriller set in a "perfect" little society where beautiful spouses seem to bow down to their hardworking, idyllic husbands. There's an unspoken notion in the new movie Holland, particularly between Kidman's character and her charming hubby (Succession Mvp Matthew Macfadyen), that the man of the house can do no wrong after "rescuing" her years prior and now providing her with a sort of utopian lifestyle within the eponymous town in Michigan.

But just like The Stepford Wives — and the numerous other high-brow thrillers Kidman has led of late, things go wrong once her heroine starts to sniff things out. Despite the nifty little twists and turns along the way in Holland — directed by Mimi Cave and written by Andrew Sodroski — the 108-minute...

“Holland”: Prime Video’s New Thriller Starring Nicole Kidman
Image
Prime Video’s latest addition, “Holland,” presents itself as an enthralling mystery thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Directed by Mimi Cave and penned by Andrew Sodroski, the film boasts a star-studded cast led by Nicole Kidman, alongside Matthew Macfadyen, Gael García Bernal, and Jude Hill. A rollercoaster of suspense, blending elements of drama and psychological intrigue, “Holland” is visually elegant with undeniable directorial style. It features an exceptional lead in Nicole Kidman, who plays a role she’s nearly specialized in: a married woman unsatisfied with her life.

It has all the ingredients for success, and yet, it fails to fully convince us.

Holland – Prime Video

Plot Summary

Set in the picturesque town of Holland, Michigan, the film follows Nancy Vandergroot, portrayed by Nicole Kidman, a meticulous teacher and housewife whose seemingly perfect life descends into chaos. As Nancy and a...

Secrets unravel in Nicole Kidman’s twisty new film ‘Holland’
Image
Kidman stars as a picture-perfect mom whose life takes a dark turn in this new mystery.

“Sometimes in life, you’ve just got to follow the clues wherever they take you.” And this one takes you straight to Holland, Michigan, where Nicole Kidman - the queen of these kinds of stories - lives a perfect life. Or so it seems. The new film, “Holland,” kicks off in a picture-perfect Michigan town full of tulips, tidy homes, and a seemingly normal family… until Kidman’s character starts digging into a secret that flips everything upside down. Matthew Macfadyen plays her husband (and might not be who he says he is), while Gael García Bernal and Jude Hill round out a cast that gets pulled into a web of lies and surprises. The movie had its world premiere at SXSW and now it’s heading straight to Prime Video on Thursday, March...

Mimi Cave
Holland (2025) Movie Review: Good Performances and Clever Direction Fail to Add Depth to a Shallow Script
Mimi Cave
Mimi Cave’s Holland needs a sub-title: I can’t believe it’s not Paul Schrader! It’s not just the way the film immerses itself into the Dutch-American culture of Western Michigan that’s traditionally been Schrader’s territory, but so much of it seems redolent of his primary thematic obsessions. It may even potentially be regarded as a feminist subversion of Schrader’s typical work, with Nicole Kidman’s heroine challenging the “toxic masculinity” (for the lack of a better word) that characterizes so many of his films, being especially reminiscent of Hardcore (1979) in many ways. Unfortunately, the story hangs not on just on a predictable plotline, but it has nothing new or particularly insightful to say about small-town America either. What this movie really needed was a writer of Schrader’s caliber to freshen it up.

The story is set in the real-life city of Holland, Michigan,...

Holland Review: Nicole Kidman is Wasted in a Movie You've Seen Too Many Times
Image
The following contains spoilers for Holland, premiering March 27, 2025 on Prime Video.

Mimi Cave's Prime Video film Holland refers not to the Netherlands -- but Holland, Michigan, where Dutch-Americans dutifully attend their tulips and every citizen owns a pair of klompen for special occasions. Nicole Kidman's character Nancy Vandergroot teaches home economics, or "Life Management," where she educates malleable youths in the art of how to make Dutch baby pancakes. The film's iteration of Holland isn't a place where people need to manage anything, but rather learn the traditions that will make it easiest to go with the general flow of the town and its people.

The stick in the mud is Nancy, who -- upon losing an earring and summarily firing a babysitter -- rouses from her passivity with a hellbent verve. Suddenly she's alert, paranoid, and begins to look for trouble where, ostensibly, there is none. As...

At the premiere of the mystery thriller Holland at the South by Southwest Festival, Gael García Bernal shared insight on his experience working with Nicole Kidman, “One of the best actors in – forever.” Holland follows Kidman’s character Nancy, a teacher who lives in Holland, Michigan with her husband, Bernal’s character. Bernal said of the film, “So this film is a sort of mystery that unravels very quickly, but very profoundly and in ways that you couldn’t imagine. It happened to me while I was reading it, and while doing it as well, so I hope that everyone gets that sort of roller coaster feeling of, ‘Ok, what’s going to happen next, what’s going to happen, everything is not what it seems!’” On working with veteran actors Kidman and Matthew Macfadyen, Bernal gushed, “They’re the best guys. Holland SXSW Review — Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen, and Gael Garcia Bernal Impress in Twisty, Sexy Thriller
Image
Director Mimi Cave made a big splash on the scene with her feature debut, Fresh, and her second feature, Holland, is another stylish genre picture. Like her previous film, Holland proves that Cave is an exciting director who doesn’t always get the best scripts. However, Holland has enough strong elements that it manages to overcome some of the more underwhelming aspects of its narrative.

Holland Review

Holland follows a woman (Nicole Kidman) living a seemingly idyllic life in small-town Michigan as she begins to suspect that her husband (Matthew Macfadyen) harbors a secret, causing her to investigate the truth with the help of a friend (Gael Garcia Bernal). Although the story will certainly unravel with even the slightest bit of scrutiny, it’s a lot of fun to watch play out, and that makes it a lot better than most thrillers that come out these days.

SXSW Highs and Lows: Matthew McConaughey Singing, Nicole Kidman’s ‘Holland’ Fizzling Out, Time-Traveling Pranksters and More
Image
The 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival, which concludes on Saturday, featured a time-traveling Rv, a disemboweling unicorn, a transracial surgery and credible testimony that extra-terrestrials exist. Here’s what rose to the top, and what failed to take flight.

Homicidal Unicorns and a Singing Matthew McConaughey Stole the Show

SXSW has distinguished itself among the top film festivals with its Headliners section, a lineup of star-driven, studio-backed, crowd-pleasing premieres that thrill SXSW audiences and help launch the films into their wide releases — from “Bridesmaids,” “21 Jump Street,” and “A Quiet Place” to “Us,” “John Wick 4” and “The Idea of You.”

This year, only one Headliner fully fit the bill: The gory horror comedy “Death of a Unicorn,” starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, had the audience laughing, screaming and cheering along with its story of a pair of homicidal fantasy creatures dispatching a über-wealthy family in the Canadian wilderness.

“Drop,...

Why Universal Should’ve Released ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ in Theaters
Image
This week marks the end of another SXSW Film & TV Festival, where IndieWire’s “Screen Talk” co-host Ryan Lattanzio was on the ground to review and cover films including Nicole Kidman’s suburban satire “Holland,” A24’s horror-comedy “Death of a Unicorn,” and Matthew McConaughey’s first film role in six years with the bluegrass-tinted Oklahoma Western “The Rivals of Amziah King.”

We recap the festival on this week’s “Screen Talk” episode, where documentaries including “The Python Hunt” (the latest nonfiction film from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Artists Equity after U2 doc “Kiss the Future” and Jennifer Lopez’s “The Greatest Love Story Never Told”) and the UFO investigation “The Age of Disclosure” popped on the ground. “The Python Hunt” centers on a snake-hunting contest in the Florida Everglades and has earned comparisons to “Tiger King.” Meanwhile, while “The Age of Disclosure” wowed audiences with its talking-heads...

Marvel Studios and Sony's nextSpider-Maninstallment starring Tom Holland has been developing slowly despite the monstrous success of No Way Home. The highly anticipated follow-up has much to live up to, not just in terms of box office, since it must also fulfill audiences with its storyline. No Way Home successfully united Holland with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. The previous Spider-Man film also put its nostalgia factor into overdrive with appearances from villains who first appeared in the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb-helmed films. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' Destin Daniel Cretton will take over the directing duties from Jon Watts for the next Spider-Man film, currently set for a July 31, 2026 release.

SXSW: Amy Wang’s ’Slanted’ Wins Narrative Jury Award
Slanted (2025)
Slanted, directed by Amy Wang, won the grand jury prize in the narrative competition section of the 2025 SXSW Film and TV festival.

Slanted follows Joan Huang, a senior in high school who undergoes an experimental racial transformation to become white and win Prom Queen.

“This unflinching satirical thriller examines racial identity in a bold and skin-tingling new way. Featuring simmering performances by the cast, this film is both specific to the fractured identity of Asian Americans and universally relatable in its theme of desperately needing to belong,” wrote the competition jury, Variety‘s Clayton Davis, Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford and IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio, about Slanted.

In the narrative section, special jury awards were given to Annapurna Sriram for Fucktoys and Amanda Peet for Fantasy Life for multihyphenate and performance, respectively.

Mimi Cave
Holland Review – SXSW 2025
Mimi Cave
Few cinematic experiences have left a bigger impact on me recently than the 2022 Sundance premiere of Fresh.

Director Mimi Cave made a striking impression with her body-horror thriller starring Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones. The film was shocking, disturbing, and utterly fascinating, announcing the arrival of a bold new filmmaker.

Now, Cave is back with Holland, an homage to ’90s erotic thrillers, featuring a stellar cast. Nicole Kidman stars as Nancy Vandergroot, a seemingly happily married woman whose husband, Fred (played by the incredibly talented Matthew Macfadyen), is the local optometrist in the small town of Holland, Michigan. The town, steeped in Dutch culture, is in the midst of its annual Tulip Festival when Nancy’s world begins to unravel.

As paranoia takes hold, Nancy starts to question the people around her and the inconsistencies in her husband’s behavior. Her suspicions reach a breaking point when Fred fails to...
