Character details are under wraps. Stand-up comedian Kreischer co-created, exec produces and stars as himself — shirtless comedian, party legend, perpetual wildcard — in Free Bert, where he finds himself in uncharted territory when his daughters are accepted to an elite Beverly Hills private school. When his unbridled antics turn his family into outcasts, he decides to “put on a shirt” and stifle his true nature to better fit in.

I was there for its second screening at the festival and had a great time, but apparently I was the odd one out: the movie has a 23% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a solid 37% below what it needed to be certified fresh. When it was released on Prime Video on March 27, audiences didn't seem to like it either. It has a 24% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 5.0 out of 10 rating on IMDb. The low rating is baffling to me because "The Astronaut," which is the actual worst movie at the festival, is somehow beating it with its 45% Rt score.

Prime Video’s latest addition, “Holland,” presents itself as an enthralling mystery thriller that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Directed by Mimi Cave and penned by Andrew Sodroski, the film boasts a star-studded cast led by Nicole Kidman, alongside Matthew Macfadyen, Gael García Bernal, and Jude Hill. A rollercoaster of suspense, blending elements of drama and psychological intrigue, “Holland” is visually elegant with undeniable directorial style. Mimi Cave’s Holland needs a sub-title: I can’t believe it’s not Paul Schrader! It’s not just the way the film immerses itself into the Dutch-American culture of Western Michigan that’s traditionally been Schrader’s territory, but so much of it seems redolent of his primary thematic obsessions. It may even potentially be regarded as a feminist subversion of Schrader’s typical work, with Nicole Kidman’s heroine challenging the “toxic masculinity” (for the lack of a better word) that characterizes so many of his films, being especially reminiscent of Hardcore (1979) in many ways. Unfortunately, the story hangs not on just on a predictable plotline, but it has nothing new or particularly insightful to say about small-town America either. What this movie really needed was a writer of Schrader’s caliber to freshen it up.

This year’s South by Southwest Film and TV Festival was a more star-studded affair than ever. Big movie stars from Nicole Kidman to Ben Affleck and Jenna Ortega descended on the city of Austin, TX to celebrate the premieres of their latest projects. Meanwhile, the festival also served as an exciting showcase of some of the most promising up-and-coming talents in the indie film scene.

From blockbusters to indie gems, this writer saw a total of 51 movies at this year’s SXSW Film and TV Festival. Although narrowing it down to our top ten was challenging, we have decided which films we think you don’t want to miss — whether they come out a few weeks from now or are still looking for a distribution deal.

At the premiere of the mystery thriller Holland at the South by Southwest Festival, Gael García Bernal shared insight on his experience working with Nicole Kidman, “One of the best actors in – forever.” Holland follows Kidman’s character Nancy, a teacher who lives in Holland, Michigan with her husband, Bernal’s character. Actress Nicole Kidman answered questions on her experience making the movie Holland at the premiere at South by Southwest Film Festival on March 9. The 2025 mystery thriller Holland follows Kidman’s character Nancy, a teacher who lives in Holland, Michigan with her husband. Kidman gave an overview of her character and her journey, “Nancy is a housewife who is living what she perceives as a pretty perfect life with a white picket fence, but she has inner conflicts and she’s looking for adventure and hoping for adventure – and she finds it but not in the way she thinks.” Asked about her experience working with actor Matthew Macfadyen, Kidman gushed, “He is so talented, and obviously we were just so lucky to have him and also Gael [García Bernal]… They are the good guys.” Holland is set to be released on Amazon Prime Video on March 27.

Director Mimi Cave made a big splash on the scene with her feature debut, Fresh, and her second feature, Holland, is another stylish genre picture. Like her previous film, Holland proves that Cave is an exciting director who doesn’t always get the best scripts. However, Holland has enough strong elements that it manages to overcome some of the more underwhelming aspects of its narrative.

Holland follows a woman (Nicole Kidman) living a seemingly idyllic life in small-town Michigan as she begins to suspect that her husband (Matthew Macfadyen) harbors a secret, causing her to investigate the truth with the help of a friend (Gael Garcia Bernal). Although the story will certainly unravel with even the slightest bit of scrutiny, it’s a lot of fun to watch play out, and that makes it a lot better than most thrillers that come out these days.

The 50-year-old Emmy-winning actor is attached to star in the upcoming Legacy of Spies TV series based on the spy novels by John le Carré. Matthew will be playing career intelligence officer George Smiley.

“Succession” star Matthew Macfadyen may have found his next TV project. According to early reports, the Emmy-winning actor is attached to star as the lead in The Ink Factory’s new show, “Legacy of Spies,” which is based on author John le Carré’s series of George Smiley novels.

If the project finds a home and is greenlit, Macfadyen will play Smiley, the legendary intelligence officer at the center of multiple le Carré novels. The rights to the author’s work are owned by The Ink Factory, which is producing “Legacy of Spies.” Fifth Season is set to distribute the project, which has reportedly been shopped around and has already caught the attention of multiple potential buyers.

Variety has learned that the drama “Legacy of Spies” is currently in the works from producer The Ink Factory and with Fifth Season onboard to distribute. Macfadyen would star as George Smiley, a central character in a number of le Carré’s novels. Stephen Cornwell and Clarissa Ingram have written the initial scripts for the potential series, with Graham Yost onboard as an executive producer.

The project is described as an amalgamation of a number of le Carré’s novels, including “The Spy Who Came In From The Cold,” “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” and “The Honorable Schoolboy,” as well as others and some unpublished work.

According to an individual with knowledge of the project, it has already been pitched to buyers both in the U.S. and U.

Slanted, directed by Amy Wang, won the grand jury prize in the narrative competition section of the 2025 SXSW Film and TV festival.

Slanted follows Joan Huang, a senior in high school who undergoes an experimental racial transformation to become white and win Prom Queen.

“This unflinching satirical thriller examines racial identity in a bold and skin-tingling new way. Featuring simmering performances by the cast, this film is both specific to the fractured identity of Asian Americans and universally relatable in its theme of desperately needing to belong,” wrote the competition jury, Variety‘s Clayton Davis, Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Ford and IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio, about Slanted.
