Exclusive: Michael Peña (End of Watch) has been tapped for a role alongside Chris Hemsworth and Lily James in Subversion, the new submarine-themed action film from Amazon MGM Studios, Deadline has learned.

Details about Peña’s role are being kept at the bottom of the ocean. The film follows a once-promising naval commander (Hemsworth) who is blackmailed by a cartel-like organization into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters. Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, with a Coast Guard officer (James) in hot pursuit, he must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both inside and outside the submarine.

Patrick Vollrath (7500) is directing the film from a script by Andrew Ferguson. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing, with executive producers Stephen Shafer and Greg Cohen for di Bonaventura Pictures.

With the release of its fourth and final three-episode batch, Disney+’s Andor rose to the top of Nielsen’s latest U.S. ranking of streaming originals.

For the week of May 12, Andor amassed 931 million minutes viewed — another weekly high for the series — across 24 total episodes. (In turn, Andor‘s “sequel movie,” Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, returned to Nielsen’s Top 10 Movies ranking, landing at No. 9 with 179 million minutes viewed.)

Good Night, and Good Luck ended its Broadway run on a high, bringing in $4.3 million last week and yet again breaking its own record for highest-grossing play on Broadway.

The record gross came as the play, starring George Clooney, also broadcast its June 7 performance live on CNN, making the show available to all viewers. The play, which recouped its $9.5 million capitalization in just over seven weeks, also hit the highest average ticket price of its run with $347 and played to more than 100 percent capacity.

The production opened at the Winter Garden Theatre April 3 and ended its run June 8, the day of the Tony Awards. The play had five Tony nominations, including one for Clooney, but walked away without any trophies.

The TV audience for the 2025 NBA Finals has fallen off considerably over the first two games — which is no surprise given the relatively small home markets of the two competing teams. Opposite game two of the Finals, the Tony Awards posted multi-year highs, and CNN’s live airing of the Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck on Saturday also drew a sizable audience.

Through the first two games between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers, the NBA Finals is averaging about 8.84 million viewers on ABC — 8.91 for the June 5 opener and 8.76 million for Sunday’s second game. That’s down about 24 percent from the first two games last year, which averaged 11.65 million viewers (and involved two big-market teams, the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks).

In addition, the 78th Annual Tony Awards hosted by Cynthia Erivo drew in the largest streaming audience on Paramount+, increasing the streaming viewership by 208% over last year.

Maybe Happy Ending emerged the big winner, taking home the Best Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical (Darren Criss), Best Direction of a Musical (Michael Arden), Best Book of a Musical (Will Aronson and Hue Park), Best Scenic Design of a Musical (Dane Laffrey and George Reeve), and Best Original Score trophies. Buena Vista Social Club followed with four, and Stranger Things: The First Shadow and Sunset Blvd. picked up three each.

The host, a Tony winner herself, who also has an Emmy and a Grammy, was joined by Oprah Winfrey backstage at the top of the CBS ceremony for a moment that paid homage to both this year’s Tony-nominated musical revival Sunset Blvd. and a memorable moment on the press tour for the first Wicked film, where co-star Ariana Grande grabbed Erivo’s finger.

Backstage, Erivo walked over to Winfrey and asked what she was doing there and the mogul said she had to be there.

Erivo asked, “What do you do when everybody is telling you what you need to do?”

Winfrey replied, “Forget about them, babe. The only thing you need to do is just be yourself.”

Criss is a first-time Tony nominee for his role in Maybe Happy Ending, and Goldsberry won a Tony for originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a performance featuring members of the original Broadway cast on the 2025 awards show.

The main ceremony, hosted by Tony, Emmy and Grammy winner Cynthia Erivo, will run from 5-8 p.m. Pt/8-11 p.m. Et, live on CBS and Paramount+ with Showtime, from New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

Disney's 2013 juggernaut film, Frozen, inspired a lot of things: sequels, toys, the answer to a decades-long mystery, and a generation of eldest daughters to "let it go." It also inspired a Broadway musical adaptation that has, of course, become its own sort of success story. So much so, that Disney has gone ahead and filmed a performance of the theatrical version, and it's going to be released this month on Disney+. And they even released a trailer to get you excited and interested about it.

Perhaps the biggest of which includes the 12 new songs that were written for the stage musical. Broadway’s history books might remember the 2024-2025 season as the year Hollywood stars – George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook – sent box office revenue (and ticket prices) soaring to record heights. Or maybe the year of Audra McDonald and Nicole Scherzinger. But I’ll remember this Broadway season as being just so very funny. Oh, Mary!, Eureka Day, Death Becomes Her, even the tender humor of Maybe Happy Ending, all supplied audiences with something in very short supply outside the theater this year: Laughter. That’s the best legacy of the 2024-2025 Broadway season.

With that in mind, and much gratitude, here are my predictions for this Sunday’s 78th Annual Tony Awards.

Decades before CNN agreed to Saturday’s live telecast of Broadway’s Good Night, and Good Luck, George Clooney had originally envisioned it as a special for CBS, not a movie for theaters and a play on Broadway.

“But then there was that mishap with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl,” recalls Clooney to Deadline. “And suddenly I got a call from the head of CBS saying, ‘We’re out of the live TV business.’ So we wrote it as a movie.”

Clooney’s vision has finally come full circle. For the penultimate performance of Good Night, and Good Luck — which opened in April and has since become the highest-grossing production in the history of the Shubert Organization — Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre will be equipped with 21 cameras for the live broadcast that’s set to kick off at 7 p.m. Et Saturday on CNN and CNN International.

Broadway is back, baby! After several years of post-pandemic struggles, box office grosses set a new record this season, thanks to a flurry of hit new musicals like Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending, Buena Vista Social Club, and Dead Outlaw. Starry revivals of Gypsy (with Audra McDonald) and Sunset Boulevard (with Nicole Scherzinger) are also generating buzz. 2025's excellent medical drama, The Pitt, has proved to be an impactful show that revitalized the genre's popularity beyond expectations. It was realistic and raw in how it mirrors the experience of real-life healthcare workers. It was also an emotional ride with compelling characters who kept us hooked for weeks on their 15-hour shift at the ER of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. All the performances were staggering, but it was Noah Wyle's which stood out the most. His performance as Dr. Michael Robinavitch, a.k.a. Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will make their Broadway debuts next year in Dog Day Afternoon, a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis (Between Riverside and Crazy) based on the true crime that inspired Sidney Lumet’s Oscar-winning 1975 motion picture starring Al Pacino and John Cazale.

The play will be directed by two-time Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold (King Charles III). Bernthal will play Sonny Amato, the character played by Pacino in the film, and Moss-Bachrach will portray Sal DeSilva, John Cazale in the movie. (The surnames were different in the film.)

The play is expected to open on Broadway in spring 2026. Additional casting was not disclosed.

Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, and (if I may invoke her name) Patti LuPone would have been a monster of an all-star Tony nomination lineup in any other season. But those past winners, each a major force in musical theater history, missed the ballot despite their (almost uniformly) strong showings on Broadway this year.

If it’s uncouth to define a season by who didn’t make the Tony cut, that group of also-rans is a sign of the riches on offer. And if this season was in part distinguished by the arrival of a cavalcade of Hollywood A-listers, the nominations also highlight how many Broadway mainstays have set up residence to deliver excellence year after year: Nominees Jonathan Groff, Danya Taymor, Kara Young, Justin Peck, and Dede Ayite all won Tonys last season.

George Clooney dropped by Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday night to plug this Saturday’s live broadcast of his Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck when he let slip what could be a bit of good news for the West End: The play might end in London.

“There’s going to be a roadshow for it,” Clooney told Meyers, “and I think it might end up in London, but it won’t be the same thing as what we’re doing now.” No more hints were given (watch the interview below).

A representative for the production confirmed the accuracy of Clooney’s comments.

SNL Meets Blt. Is Michaels Adapting McNally’s Memoir?

Looks like Lorne Michaels may have found his next prestige project — and this one comes with steak frites and a side of passive-aggressive Instagram feuding. Sources tell Rambling Reporter that the Saturday Night Live creator has optioned Keith McNally’s dishy new memoir, I Regret Almost Everything, which charts the legendary restaurateur’s rise, fall, stroke, suicide attempt, recovery and general disappointment with humanity. In other words, comedy gold.

McNally, of course, is the onetime Brasserie King of Manhattan — the man who, as The New York Times once put it, “invented downtown” with such ’80s and ’90s hotspots as Odeon and Balthazar. More recently, he’s drawn attention for his unfiltered Instagram account — a kind of running off-off-Broadway one-man show where he’s taken aim at everyone from James Corden (banned from Balthazar in 2022 for alleged omelet-related rudeness) to Jessica Seinfeld...

TV’s erstwhile Dr. Ross speaks highly of Dr. Robby: During an appearance on Monday’s Late Night With Seth Meyers, George Clooney sang ER co-star Noah Wyle’s praises, marveling at his performance in the Max medical drama The Pitt.

“Have you guys seen that show?” Clooney asked Meyers’ audience. “It’s so good, and I have to say: We’ve been really dear friends since [ER] — since we did the pilot of the show. He is just the most honorable, talented young man, [which] I get to say because I’m an old man, and I cannot be happier for his success on the show.

Good Night, and Good Luck yet again broke its own record for highest weekly gross for a Broadway play, bringing in $4.245 million last week, as the production wraps up its run. 

The play, starring George Clooney, is set to end its run June 8, with a live broadcast of the show airing on CNN on June 7.  The show has been playing to 100 percent capacity throughout and had an average ticket price of $339 last week.

Othello, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington, followed with $3.5 million. Wicked followed with $2.3 million, then The Lion King and Glengarry Glen Ross, both with just above $2 million, even though Glengarry played 7 performances and The Lion King played 8.

The Tony Awards ceremony is also set to take place June 8, with live performances from Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, Death Becomes Her, Floyd Collins, Gypsy, Maybe Happy Ending, Operation Mincemeat, Pirates! The Penzance Musical, Sunset Blvd., Just In Time...

Ahead of the CNN presentation of Good Night, and Good Luck this Saturday, Tony Award-nominee George Clooney stopped by Late Night with Seth Meyers to discuss the record-breaking production. The Clooneys are steeping out for the night with Bono!

George Clooney held hands with wife Amal and shared a laugh with the 65-year-old U2 lead singer as they left Polo Bar after dinner on Friday night (May 30) in New York City.

For their night out, the 64-year-old Oscar-winning actor wore a navy suit with a black shirt and a gray baseball hat, the 47-year-old human rights lawyer wore a strapless leaf-print dress, and Bono wore an all black suit with his signature red-lensed glasses.

It was recently was announced that George received his first Tony nomination for his debut Broadway role in Good Night, and Good Luck!

Conan O’Brien is in talks to appear on Late Night with Seth Meyers – a feat that would mean all three previous hosts of the NBC late-night show will have made an appearance.

Meyers, speaking Tuesday night at his FYC event in Los Angeles, was asked by moderator Ike Barinholtz, an old friend of Meyers and star of Apple’s The Studio, who was his “golden goose.”

“I’ve spoken to this person, and I think it will happen soon. They’ve expressed their desire to do it. There’s only been four of us that have done this on NBC and I’m lucky enough to have had [David] Letterman on and I’ve been lucky enough to have had [Jimmy] Fallon on. I would love to have Conan back,” he said.

Meyers added that O’Brien’s Mark Twain Prize for American Humor honor at the Kennedy Center was an “incredible night.

Broadway’s 2024-2025 season is officially the highest-grossing in the industry’s history, with total grosses of $1.89 billion surpassing the previous – and pre-Covid – record-holding 2018-2019 season’s $1.82 billion, according to statistics released today by the Broadway League.

Even accounting for the “leap year” nature of the just-ended season – 2024-2025 was a 53-week season while most seasons, including 2018-2019, are 52 weeks – the just-ended season would still be the new record-holder: The first 52 weeks of the most recent season grossed $1.85 billion.

Attendance, however, lagged a tad behind the previous 2018-2019 record-holder: 14,658,531 compared to 14,768,254. Theater-goers in the just-ended season paid about $5.25 more in average ticket prices – $129.12 compared to $123.87 – which accounts for the lower attendance-higher gross disparity.
