Tom Cruise and George Clooney may seem to have little in common except for this: Pushing through their mid-60s, the two stars proved this year that it’s possible to defy the odds and create strong third acts for their acting careers. And to relish the risks.
Clooney’s Broadway foray was a major success and so was its debut on CNN over the weekend. Having filled its theater for a month, Good Night, and Good Luck was re-invented as live theater on TV. For Clooney, it was a welcome turnaround: Only a year earlier, his popcorn movie with Brad Pitt (Wolfs) had tanked, and he was hearing rumbles about his politics and personal life.
Cruise’s eighth Mission: Impossible re-awakened the global box office yet again, even invading the Guinness Book of Records (do they really chart burning parachute jumps?). But a year ago, his budget was drifting...

Good Night, and Good Luck ended its Broadway run on a high, bringing in $4.3 million last week and yet again breaking its own record for highest-grossing play on Broadway.
The record gross came as the play, starring George Clooney, also broadcast its June 7 performance live on CNN, making the show available to all viewers. The play, which recouped its $9.5 million capitalization in just over seven weeks, also hit the highest average ticket price of its run with $347 and played to more than 100 percent capacity.
The production opened at the Winter Garden Theatre April 3 and ended its run June 8, the day of the Tony Awards. The play had five Tony nominations, including one for Clooney, but walked away without any trophies.

Over the weekend, just before the Tony Awards, CNN broadcast the penultimate performance of Good Night, and Good Luck from Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre. According to Nielsen, 7.34 million viewers tuned in to watch the production across the cable network and streaming platforms. This special CNN presentation of the five-time Tony Award-nominated play by George Clooney and Grant Heslov marked a historic Broadway first: never before has a live play ever been broadcast on CNN. Anchors Anderson Cooper and Pamela Brown led special live coverage. George Clooney made his Broadway debut as Edward R. Murrow, showcasing his legendary, history-altering, on-air showdown with Senator Joseph McCarthy. As McCarthyism casts a shadow over America, Murrow and his news team choose to confront the growing tide of paranoia and propaganda, even if it means...

The TV audience for the 2025 NBA Finals has fallen off considerably over the first two games — which is no surprise given the relatively small home markets of the two competing teams. Opposite game two of the Finals, the Tony Awards posted multi-year highs, and CNN’s live airing of the Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck on Saturday also drew a sizable audience.
Through the first two games between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Indiana Pacers, the NBA Finals is averaging about 8.84 million viewers on ABC — 8.91 for the June 5 opener and 8.76 million for Sunday’s second game. That’s down about 24 percent from the first two games last year, which averaged 11.65 million viewers (and involved two big-market teams, the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks).

If you thought George Clooney was too busy with Tonys season to catch up on streaming TV, think again — because he’s officially a fan of The Pitt. During his appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers last week, Clooney took a moment to shout out his former ER co-star Noah Wyle and the medical drama that’s quickly becoming a sensation on HBO Max. Clooney, who played the doctor of a generation of people's dreams in Dr. Doug Ross for five seasons before trading scrubs for superstardom, couldn’t help but gush about Wyle’s performance in the breakout hit.
“Have you guys seen that show? It’s so good, and I have to say: We’ve been really dear friends since [ER] — since we did the pilot of the show. He is just the most honorable, talented young man, [which] I get to say because I’m an old man,...

Cole Escola’s name rang out at Radio City Music Hall on 8 June when the writer-performer behind the anarchic farce Oh, Mary! won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play, becoming the first openly non-binary artist to claim a lead acting prize in any play category. They accepted the trophy with a cheeky nod to a cancelled Grindr date and a salute to “every queer kid who thinks Broadway has no room for them”.
Escola both wrote and stars in Oh, Mary!, a bawdy re-imagining of Mary Todd Lincoln that transferred to the Lyceum Theatre last July after a sold-out Off-Broadway run. The production, staged by director Sam Pinkleton, had already earned Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk honors before arriving at the Tonys with five nominations. In the lead actor race Escola prevailed over high-profile contenders including George Clooney, whose stage debut in Good Night, and Good Luck went home empty-handed.

After decades of dominating Hollywood, George Clooney made his Broadway debut in Good Night, and Good Luck. His fantastic portrayal even earned him a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play. The 2025 Tony Awards were supposed to be his night. However, on June 8 at Radio City Music Hall, it wasn’t just his performance, his headline-worthy return to silver hair, or his star status that stole the spotlight. It was his 8-year-old twins.
In a red carpet interview with E! News, Clooney revealed that while he’s been spending his evenings onstage playing news legend Edward R. Murrow, his twins have their eyes set on a different kind of entertainment: Taylor Swift and the cast of Wicked– so much so that they couldn’t care less about Hollywood legends either.

Cynthia Erivo was ready for her close-up on the 2025 Tony Awards.
The host, a Tony winner herself, who also has an Emmy and a Grammy, was joined by Oprah Winfrey backstage at the top of the CBS ceremony for a moment that paid homage to both this year’s Tony-nominated musical revival Sunset Blvd. and a memorable moment on the press tour for the first Wicked film, where co-star Ariana Grande grabbed Erivo’s finger.
Backstage, Erivo walked over to Winfrey and asked what she was doing there and the mogul said she had to be there.
Erivo asked, “What do you do when everybody is telling you what you need to do?”
Winfrey replied, “Forget about them, babe. The only thing you need to do is just be yourself.”

Former CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley sent a bold message about Donald Trump‘s lawsuit against the network during an appearance on 60 Minutes—and the journalist didn’t mince words with his blunt declaration. On Saturday, June 7, Pelley, 67, sat down with Anderson Cooper, 58, to speak about the lawsuit targeting CBS’ parent company, Paramount Global. The interview came right after CNN aired a live broadcast of the Broadway play Good Night, and Good Luck starring George Clooney. In the production, Clooney portrays the late journalist Edward R. Murrow, who famously challenged Senator Joseph McCarthy’s tactics during the Red Scare. “The most important thing is to have the courage to speak, to not let fear permeate the country so that everyone suddenly becomes silent,” Pelley told Cooper. “If you have the courage to speak, we are saved. If you fall silent, the country is doomed,” the journalist continued “It is...

Just a year after he left the cast of “E.R.,” the former Doug Ross convinced CBS president Leslie Moonves to mount a live production of “Fail Safe,” one of the actor’s favorite films.

George Clooney is one of the biggest stars in the world now, but he got his break in the TV business. He had his breakthrough with the medical drama ER, where he played the charming Dr. Doug Ross, and received two Primetime Emmy nominations for his performance in the role.

The HBO Max show has been the breakout hit of the year due to its high-stakes premise and real-time structure, and has already been renewed for a second season. Clooney appreciated Wyle and the show.

Disney's 2013 juggernaut film, Frozen, inspired a lot of things: sequels, toys, the answer to a decades-long mystery, and a generation of eldest daughters to "let it go." It also inspired a Broadway musical adaptation that has, of course, become its own sort of success story. So much so, that Disney has gone ahead and filmed a performance of the theatrical version, and it's going to be released this month on Disney+. And they even released a trailer to get you excited and interested about it.
The clip, which features the announcement of the release date, June 20, 2025, teases the allure of watching the Broadway production. Perhaps the biggest of which includes the 12 new songs that were written for the stage musical. And if that doesn't blow your mind, surely the sheer spectacle of it all (and all those impressive practical effects) will. But don't just take our word for it, check...

Broadway’s history books might remember the 2024-2025 season as the year Hollywood stars – George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook – sent box office revenue (and ticket prices) soaring to record heights. Or maybe the year of Audra McDonald and Nicole Scherzinger. But I’ll remember this Broadway season as being just so very funny. Oh, Mary!, Eureka Day, Death Becomes Her, even the tender humor of Maybe Happy Ending, all supplied audiences with something in very short supply outside the theater this year: Laughter. That’s the best legacy of the 2024-2025 Broadway season.
With that in mind, and much gratitude, here are my predictions for this Sunday’s 78th Annual Tony Awards.
Best Play
Will win: Oh, Mary!
Should win: Oh, Mary!

Decades before CNN agreed to Saturday’s live telecast of Broadway’s Good Night, and Good Luck, George Clooney had originally envisioned it as a special for CBS, not a movie for theaters and a play on Broadway.
“But then there was that mishap with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake at the Super Bowl,” recalls Clooney to Deadline. “And suddenly I got a call from the head of CBS saying, ‘We’re out of the live TV business.’ So we wrote it as a movie.”
Clooney’s vision has finally come full circle. For the penultimate performance of Good Night, and Good Luck — which opened in April and has since become the highest-grossing production in the history of the Shubert Organization — Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre will be equipped with 21 cameras for the live broadcast that’s set to kick off at 7 p.m. Et Saturday on CNN and CNN International.

Broadway is back, baby! After several years of post-pandemic struggles, box office grosses set a new record this season, thanks to a flurry of hit new musicals like Death Becomes Her, Maybe Happy Ending, Buena Vista Social Club, and Dead Outlaw. Starry revivals of Gypsy (with Audra McDonald) and Sunset Boulevard (with Nicole Scherzinger) are also generating buzz. But it’s the non-musical plays with Hollywood headliners — like Good Night, and Good Luck (which will live-stream on CNN on June 7) with George Clooney, Glengarry Glen Ross with Bob Odenkirk, Kieran Culkin and Bill Burr, and Othello with Jake Gyllenhaal and Denzel Washington — that are pulling in the most eye-popping box office numbers (despite a lack of Tony Award nominations). Now, the best of Broadway will be celebrated at the 78th Annual Tony Awards, live from Radio City Music Hall, airing Sunday, June 8, hosted by Cynthia Erivo. A special live preshow,...

2025's excellent medical drama, The Pitt, has proved to be an impactful show that revitalized the genre's popularity beyond expectations. It was realistic and raw in how it mirrors the experience of real-life healthcare workers. It was also an emotional ride with compelling characters who kept us hooked for weeks on their 15-hour shift at the ER of the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. All the performances were staggering, but it was Noah Wyle's which stood out the most. His performance as Dr. Michael Robinavitch, a.k.a. Robby is one of the year's best, and his co-star in the classic show ER, Hollywood (and now Broadway) legend George Clooney, agrees with this.
As reported by TV Insider, the O Brother, Where Art Thou? and From Dusk Till Dawn star appeared on the show Late Night with Seth Meyers to promote his current Broadway hit, Good Night, and Good Luck.

George Clooney’s play Good Night, and Good Luck is set to air live on CNN this Saturday, in a move meant to spread the play’s timely message and raise the profile of Broadway.
The idea for the live broadcast originated with Clooney, who is starring in the production as legendary journalist Edward R. Murrow, and co-wrote the play. The play follows Murrow as he pursues reporting exposing the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy, and stands up to pushback from McCarthy as well as CBS station heads.
“One of the reasons that George came to Broadway with this show is because the story is deeply, deeply meaningful to him,” said Sue Wagner, one of the lead producers. “It was really important to him to stand on stage every night and say to people, ‘This isn’t about power unchecked. Yes, George Clooney has seen The Pitt and he loves it. During an appearance on Monday’s Late Night With Seth Meyers, Clooney sang the praises of his former ER co-star Noah Wyle’s new medical drama.
“It’s so good, and I have to say: We’ve been really dear friends since [ER] — since we did the pilot of the show,” the Oscar winner told the chat show host. “He is just the most honorable, talented young man, [which] I get to say because I’m an old man, and I cannot be happier for his success on the show. The show is just a beautiful show, and he does just a great job with it.” Clooney and Wyle worked together on ER for five seasons before Clooney left to focus on his film career.

Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will make their Broadway debuts next year in Dog Day Afternoon, a new play by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis (Between Riverside and Crazy) based on the true crime that inspired Sidney Lumet’s Oscar-winning 1975 motion picture starring Al Pacino and John Cazale.
The play will be directed by two-time Olivier Award winner Rupert Goold (King Charles III). Bernthal will play Sonny Amato, the character played by Pacino in the film, and Moss-Bachrach will portray Sal DeSilva, John Cazale in the movie. (The surnames were different in the film.)
The play is expected to open on Broadway in spring 2026. Additional casting was not disclosed.
The synopsis: Step back into the sweltering summer of 1972, New York City—a time when the Vietnam War looms large, Watergate headlines flood the news, and one man’s desperate act captivates the nation. A Brooklyn bank holdup quickly goes wrong,...

Sutton Foster, Bernadette Peters, Lea Salonga, Idina Menzel, and (if I may invoke her name) Patti LuPone would have been a monster of an all-star Tony nomination lineup in any other season. But those past winners, each a major force in musical theater history, missed the ballot despite their (almost uniformly) strong showings on Broadway this year.
If it’s uncouth to define a season by who didn’t make the Tony cut, that group of also-rans is a sign of the riches on offer. And if this season was in part distinguished by the arrival of a cavalcade of Hollywood A-listers, the nominations also highlight how many Broadway mainstays have set up residence to deliver excellence year after year: Nominees Jonathan Groff, Danya Taymor, Kara Young, Justin Peck, and Dede Ayite all won Tonys last season.

SNL Meets Blt. Is Michaels Adapting McNally’s Memoir?
Looks like Lorne Michaels may have found his next prestige project — and this one comes with steak frites and a side of passive-aggressive Instagram feuding. Sources tell Rambling Reporter that the Saturday Night Live creator has optioned Keith McNally’s dishy new memoir, I Regret Almost Everything, which charts the legendary restaurateur’s rise, fall, stroke, suicide attempt, recovery and general disappointment with humanity. In other words, comedy gold.
McNally, of course, is the onetime Brasserie King of Manhattan — the man who, as The New York Times once put it, “invented downtown” with such ’80s and ’90s hotspots as Odeon and Balthazar. More recently, he’s drawn attention for his unfiltered Instagram account — a kind of running off-off-Broadway one-man show where he’s taken aim at everyone from James Corden (banned from Balthazar in 2022 for alleged omelet-related rudeness) to Jessica Seinfeld...

Conan O’Brien is in talks to appear on Late Night with Seth Meyers – a feat that would mean all three previous hosts of the NBC late-night show will have made an appearance.
Meyers, speaking Tuesday night at his FYC event in Los Angeles, was asked by moderator Ike Barinholtz, an old friend of Meyers and star of Apple’s The Studio, who was his “golden goose.”
“I’ve spoken to this person, and I think it will happen soon. They’ve expressed their desire to do it.
