Con Queens

Needless to say that I had indeed never heard about this 2024 movie "Con Queens" from writer and director John Eagle prior to sitting down and watching it. However, I have to say that I harbored zero expectations to the movie, as it just seemed to be one of those generic type of movies. Yet, I still opted to give the movie a fair chance, as I had never seen it, nor heard about it.

The storyline in the movie was bland and rather boring, and I was struggling to keep watching the movie just short of making it to the halfway marker.

Of course I was not familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but then again this is not really a genre of movies that I tend to sit down and watch. The acting performances were a bit of a mixed bag of nuts; some of the acting performances were fair, while others was like watching a constipated person trying to make it to the bathroom in time through an impassable crowd.

Some of the dialogue in the movie is pretty cringeworthy to listen to.

Now, I am sure that there is an audience out there for a movie such as "Con Queens", I just happened to not really be a part of that particular target audience.

My rating of writer and director John Eagle's 2024 movie "Con Queens" lands on a generous two out of ten stars.

This film essentially begins with a struggling beauty salon owner by the name of "Anita" (Mercedes Davis) offering a job to her best friend "Sherry" (Jazmine Davis) who has recently lost her husband due to gang violence and has nowhere else to turn. For her part, although she is married, Anita's husband has become increasingly frustrated with her continued resistance toward having a baby and starting a family with him. So much so, that he eventually walks out on her. Likewise, Sherry has also become angry with her for passing her over for a key promotion within the beauty salon. Yet as bad as everything has been, the worst is yet to come as she is not only tried and convicted for a crime she did not commit but, while in prison, she learns that both her husband and best friend are the ones who set her up in the first place. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this could have been a decent film if it had the financial resources necessary for a movie of this type. Unfortunately, that clearly wasn't the case, and the film suffered as a result with cheap sets, mediocre acting and a rather bad script negatively affecting the final product. Admittedly, Mercedes Davis performed reasonably well, all things considered, but it still wasn't enough to overcome the obvious faults just mentioned, and I have rated this movie accordingly. Below average.
