Hollywood Remembers Veteran Distribution Exec Erik Lomis: “Your Instinct and Inspiration Never Led You Astray”
Image
The movie industry gave the late Erik Lomis — the bold and shrewd studio distribution chief who released hundreds of movies during his career — a fitting sendoff Wednesday night.

Lomis, who died suddenly in March at age 64, posthumously received the 2023 Will Rogers Pioneer of the Year Award during an emotional and touching ceremony at The Beverly Hilton on Oct. 4. Patricia Laucella

“Your instinct and inspiration never led you astray. I’m honored to have worked so closely with you,” said Creed series star and Creed III director Michael B. Jordan via video (the MGM threequel was the last film Lomis released in theaters before his death).

Speedy Ortiz Announce 10th Anniversary Reissue of Major Arcana, Share Remastered “Tiger Tank”: Stream
Image
It’s been over 10 years since Speedy Ortiz shared their debut album, Major Arcana. Now, the beloved indie quartet is paying homage to the record with a 10th anniversary reissue featuring remastered versions of the songs, due out on November 17th. Listen to the first preview — a remastered version of “Tiger Tank” — below.

Major Arcana became an indie hit when it dropped in 2013, with Consequence’s Katherine Flynn writing at the time that Speedy Ortiz had masterfully utilized older sounds and styles, while still offering something entirely new and compellingly raw. “This is the real deal, ripped from notebook pages, the torn, frilly edges still hanging on,” Flynn wrote.

For her part, Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis explained that the album is teeming with the energy of the band’s early, DIY days. “Speedy made Major Arcana in a flash of momentum — four days of recording at Sonelab with our pal Justin Pizzoferrato,...

Expendables 4 Director Talks John Wick Comparisons And Jason Statham's Fighting Style [Exclusive Interview]
Image
For a movie with a tagline that literally (and hilariously) states, "They'll die when they're dead," perhaps it's only fitting that "Expendables 4" feels like a last gasp for star-driven action blockbusters. In a noticeable shift in historic trends, audiences seem to have increasingly flocked to theaters less out of a desire to see specific movie stars, and more to catch the latest event-sized movie based on a recognizable brand. Tom Cruise may be on the frontlines fighting back against this rising tide with everything that he's got, but surely there's enough evidence to suggest that IP is what's selling tickets these days, not actors. Even A-listers like Chris Evans have begun to accept this, as he recently told GQ, "That was the beauty of working on Marvel films. You never really had to be front and center. The character is the star."

Just don't try telling any of this to the "Expendables" franchise.

Magic: The Gathering — 10 Cards That Got Banned The Fastest
Image
To preserve the integrity of tournament play, the 10 fastest cards banned from Magic: The Gathering took less than two months to be removed. Along with Duelists Convocation International, the governing body that sanctions tournament gameplay, Wizards of the Coast began announcing banned cards that cannot be used during official tournament play. The reason cards are banned comes down to how powerful they are and the advantage they give over other opponents.

However, since the advent of different formatting, Magic: The Gathering cards can also be banned due to how unfairly they can interact with older cards from previous formats, such as Vintage and Standard, which were introduced in 1995. No matter the cause or reasoning for a card's ban, in such modern formats as Commander and Booster Draft, some have been banned in lightning-fast time and led to serious upheaval for those who owned them. Mind's Desire was notoriously banned from...

Sweden's Oscar History
Image
by Nathaniel R

Charter, a child custody and abduction drama, will represent Sweden this season at the Oscars. It previously played at the Göteborg, Sundance, and Zurich film festivals. It's the second feature from Amanda Kernell who won several festival awards with her debut Sami Blood (2016). Familiar face and acclaimed Norwegian star Ane Dahl Torp headlines.

Though Denmark is currently more popular with Oscar voters than Sweden, Sweden is the all-time leader among Scandinavian countries. That's due in large part to three auteurs: Ingmar Bergman, Jan Troell, and Bo Widerberg who were contemporaries in mid 20th century cinema. An investigation of Sweden's Oscar history after the jump...

Companion Cards Are Dominating Magic: The Gathering eSports Tournaments
Magic: The Gathering
A new Magic: The Gathering keyword introduced with Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths has already had a massive impact on the metagame despite the set being less than a week old. Companions, creature spells that trigger a permanent effect by meeting pre-determined conditions, are not only dominating Standard play but almost every ruleset considered legal for competitive play.

The majority of top players participating in various Magic: The Gathering Online tournaments since Ikoria‘s release opted to build their strategy around one of the powerful cards, with Arena Decklists podcast co-host Bryan Gottlieb recently pointing out just how prevalent Companions have proven to be in such a short space of time. The number of top finishes taken by decks including any one of ten Companions available was as follows, according to Gottlieb:

1st and 2nd in the Vintage Challenge 1st to 4th in the Legacy Challenge The entire Top 8 of the...

‘For Sama’ Is Named Top Doc at Ida Documentary Awards
Para Sama (2019)
“For Sama,” Waad al-Kateab’s wrenching story of raising a young daughter in war-torn Syria, has been named the best nonfiction film of 2019 at the International Documentary Association’s 35th annual Ida Documentary Awards, which were handed out on Saturday night on the Paramount Pictures lot in Los Angeles.

Al-Kateab, who directed “For Sama” with Edward Watts, also received the Ida Awards Courage Under Fire Award at the ceremony. Last week, the film also won the top award at the British Independent Film Awards, a rarity for a documentary.

Steven Bognar and Julie Reichert received the Best Director Award, the first time the Ida has handed out that particular prize, for their look at the culture clash when a Chinese company took over an American auto glass factory in Ohio in “American Factory.”

Last Knights | Review
About Last Knight: Kiriya’s Culture Club Reimagining of the Feudal System

It’s unclear for who or for what reason Japanese director Kazuaki Kiriya decided to undertake his English language debut, Last Knights, a convoluted pseudo-revenge flick that plays like some very watered down version of the classic 47 Ronin mythos but reconstituted within a parallel universe’s sci-fi inspired Crusades tale. A gig is a gig, so we can’t blame the poo poo platter of multicultural actors portraying peoples we’re supposed to believe all resided in the same place (not to mention, fought for the same cause), each with varying degrees of accented and/or broken English. Incredibly flaccid and late staged action sequences following a baffling revenge plot don’t help matters, except maybe to say that even if the world had known an age of such incredible diversity we still wouldn’t be able to all just get along.

Miss Bala’s Stephanie Sigman Is Spectre’s Third Bond Girl
Daniel Craig’s 007 is one lucky guy. In this November’s Spectre, the British spy will be trying out his terrible yet seductive one-liners on the likes of Monica Bellucci and Lea Seydoux, but today brings news that a third Bond girl has entered the picture: Mexican actress Stephanie Sigman.

The star, who previously toplined Mexico’s 2011 Oscars foreign language submission, Miss Bala, and Norwegian thriller Pioneer, was announced to be playing the role of Estrella via the James Bond 007 Facebook page.

Though Sigman, who’ll appear in Netflix’s upcoming Narcos and also had a role of FX’s departed The Bridge, is on the rise, she’s still less known than Bellucci or Seydoux, leading to speculation that her character is a dead woman walking. One Facebook commenter was quick to question whether she’ll be a “sacrificial lamb,” in the spirit of Shirley Easton’s Jill Masterston...

'Pete's Dragon' Adds 'Hunger Games' Star Wes Bentley
Wes Bentley at an event for Los juegos del hambre (2012)
The Hunger Games star Wes Bentley has joined the cast of Disney's Pete's Dragon remake. No details were given regarding his character, but he joins a cast that includes Oakes Fegley, Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard and Oona Laurence. David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints) is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Toby Halbrooks.

The original Pete's Dragon hit theaters in 1977, a live-action/animation hybrid that followed the adventures of a young New England orphan named Pete (Sean Marshall), who escapes from his abusive adoptive parents and encounters a dragon named Elliot. The duo make their way to Passamaquoddy, Maine, where they find refuge with a lighthouse keeper named Nora (Helen Reddy) and her father Lampie (Mickey Rooney). The remake is said to remove all of the musical elements of the original, setting this new story in a logging village, instead of a fishing village. The story follows Pete,...

The Fear Monger: Friday The 13th May Bring Back This Iconic Character
Good day, horror fans. The scariest thing about this week might just be the complete lack of big horror releases in theaters. Arguably the biggest debut is Gregory Levasseur.s Egypt-set supernatural horror The Pyramid, but it wasn.t even given that wide of a berth. (It isn.t playing where I live, which may or may not be inside of a haunted pyramid.) There.s also Erik Skjoldbjærg.s Norwegian thriller Pioneer, but that.s got an even smaller release window. On the VOD front, December 5th saw the release of the thriller Poker Night, which stars Ron Perlman, Titus Welliver, Giancarlo Esposito and Ron Eldard. (Go watch The Babadook if you haven.t yet.) In smaller news, Uwe Boll has taken to Indiegogo to try and fund the presumably violent sequel Rampage 3: No Mercy. (Why?) The highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Z for Zachariah, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and...

Pioneer Review
Marking my second cinematic foray of 2014 into the lonesome world of deep sea diving (the first being James Cameron’s documentary Deepsea Challenge 3D), filmmaker Erik Skjoldbjærg transports us back to the “Norwegian Oil Boom of the 1980s” – a time in history where nations were battling for a slice of Norway’s blackest riches.

Pioneer is a story filled with greedy corporations, wide-eyed politicians, diving records, and conspiracies most foul, uncovering secrets buried below the murky sea floor for years without much notice. It’s a recognizable story of people becoming cogs in a dangerous machine running solely on the promise of tremendous payoffs, and the lengths some cogs will go for their due justice, but you’re right to question the intensity of this deep-sea-detective-case. Norway’s historical significance may be staggering, but facts don’t immediately translate into a suspenseful underwater mystery without a little help.

Interview: Wes Bentley Talks Pioneer (Exclusive)
Pionér (2013)
Often times, the most exhilarating way to effectively tell an intriguing story that’s set against captivating stunts is to feature an enthralling protagonist who’s relentlessly searching for a truth, which threatens their ability to understand their actual reality. That chilling fine line between the hero completely giving into their paranoia, and their ability to discover the true conspiracy, is also often highlighted in their interactions with a number of potential antagonists. The protagonist’s persistent quest to uncover the true moral and ethical dilemmas during the Norwegian Oil Boom 30 years ago is intriguingly presented in Norwegian co-writer-director Erik Skjoldbjaerg’s new thriller, ‘Pioneer.’ The filmmaker worked with Norwegian actor Aksel Hennie, [ Read More ]

A Riveting Thriller, Pioneer Will Make You Feel the Paranoia
Erik Skjoldbjærg
Director Erik Skjoldbjærg never met a migraine he didn’t love. Whether his protagonists’ headaches, dizzy spells, and hallucinations are caused by the Norwegian midnight sun (Insomnia) or, as in the riveting new thriller Pioneer, deep-sea diving, their cranial torture becomes ours, flooding the screen. So does their mounting paranoia.

Petter (Aksel Hennie), a diver hired by a Norwegian-American crew to help build an underwater oil pipeline, has plenty of reasons to be paranoid. During a 500-meter plunge, he passes out and — according to his superiors — inadvertently causes the death of his brother and partner. As he struggles to clear his name, he discovers that a surveillance tape of the dive has been stolen, and that debilitating gas ...

Oil!: Skjoldbjaerg’s Latest an Icy Conspiracy Thriller

Norwegian director Erik Skjoldbjaerg has remained a hard director to peg ever since his celebrated 1997 debut, Insomnia, which predated the Nordic Noir craze that seems to have dominated the output of cinema from that region of the world for the better half of the last decade. A well intentioned English language debut followed with an adaptation of Elizabeth Wurtzel’s memoir, Prozac Nation, which received a maligned theatrical release, while his next two features (including an Ibsen update) never received Us distribution. Luckily his latest endeavor, Pioneer, which revisits real events from the early 80s Norwegian oil boom, will give him a bit more international attention. A mixture of native and American cast members, Skjoldbjaerg throws the events into a tangled web of conspiracy that sometimes seems to get a bit ahead of itself. But without a doubt, it’s an...

‘Pioneer’ and ‘Poker Night’ Both Start With ‘P’ and Open This Friday, But Are They Thrillers Worth Seeing?
Two new thrillers hit VOD and iTunes this week, but while they couldn’t be more different in story they share two things beyond their first letter and inclusion under the same genre umbrella. They’re attractive visually and feature some solid performances. But is that enough to make either of them worth watching? Pioneer is a ’70s -set Norwegian thriller about the decade’s oil boom in the North Sea and follows a deep-sea diver intent on investigating the supposedly accidental death of his brother. His quest for the truth reveals a possible conspiracy involving Norwegian & U.S. interests and the billions of dollars at stake. Poker Night is far smaller in scale and focuses on a rookie cop forced to use lessons learned at the poker table with senior detectives when he’s abducted by a psychopath with a grudge. Pioneer It’s the 1970’s, and the oil and gas boom is lighting up the...
