While Vincent Dekker and Pierre Heijboer are the real investigative journalists uncovering the circumstances of the Bijlmer aviation disaster, the character of local veterinarian Asha Willems is entirely fictional. According to the producers, she is a composite of all the citizens, rescue workers and general practitioners from the Bijlmer community who cooperated with the journalists for more than six years to discover the truth.
Largely based on the Bijlmerramp, where an El-Al cargo Boeing 747 crashed into two apartment blocks in the Bijlmer (part of Amsterdam) on Sunday 4th October 1992. As mentioned prior to every episode, the series is largely based in fact but allows for some fictional elements for dramatization.
