Dream High tells the story of six students at Kirin Art High School who work to achieve their dreams of becoming music stars in the Korean music industry. Go Hye Mi is a student who had majored in classical music but has to give up her dream by entering Kirin Art High School to pay off her father's debt. However, she needs to get two other students to also come to the school in order for her to enroll in the school conditionally. These two students are Song Sam Dong, who lives in the countryside, and Jin Guk, whom she accidentally meets while trying to escape from a loan shark. Yoon Baek Hee, formerly Hyemi's sidekick, becomes her rival in school because Hye Mi betrays her during an audition to enter the school.

Six students at Kirin High School share dreams of becoming K-pop idols, among others. During their school years, they learn how to develop their singing, songwriting and dancing skills while undergoing personal growth. They also start to develop feelings for one another. Each of them has their own strengths and weaknesses, but they strive to debut with the support and guidance of one another.

A musical drama that was the brainchild between Korea's top star Bae Yong Joon, and music producer/singer/actor Park Jin Young, Dream High was an instant hit in Korea for its mix of K-pop and melodrama. Kirin Arts High is famous for the molding of successful young idols in South Korea. Present day, Superstar K exists as one of the top global stars who came from Kirin. Taken back to where it all started, we follow six young students as they form friendships and face betrayal in order to achieve their goals and dreams. K-pop singers Suzy, IU, Taecyeon, Eunjung, and Wooyoung join the cast alongside actor Kim Soo Hyun, as they all sing and dance into everyone's hearts in the hope of becoming the one and only Superstar K.

Song Sam-dong (Kim Soo-hyun) lives in the country side and dreams of becoming an owner of a stock farm. He falls in love with Go Hye-mi (Bae Suzy) at first sight and follows her to Kirin High School of Art. There he discovers his genius like musical talent. Jin-Guk (Taek-yeon) is a gifted dancer, but a troubled student at school. The director of Kirin High School of Art ((Bae Yong-jun)) recommends to Jin-guk to enroll at his school. There, Jin-guk's talents blossom and he now dreams of becoming a global star. Exchange student Kevin (Wooyoung) comes to Kirin High after receiving the top score for new applicants. He comes from abroad and shows outstanding skills as a dancer. Go Hye-mi (Bae Suzy) is the most popular girl at Kirin High. She carries herself as a confident girl, but inside hides a sad past. She dreamed of becoming a world renown classical vocalist, but after the collapse of her family she had no choice but to enter Kirin High School of Art. She is loved by Song Sam-dong and Jin-gook. Yoon Becky (Eun-jung) looks up to Go Hye-mi, who appears to have everything. They soon become rivals. Erica (Yoon Young-ah) is a popular teen star. She enters Kirin High School of Art and becomes the object of admiration by her peers. She looks forward to having a "regular" school life.
